HichamSmith: I am Moroccan ,and i know what is going on here in my country and i don't share the same things with you!
Let me put things brief & clear. First,if the king is not there , there will be no such thing called "Development" in Morocco, let alone unity so and so. (i know you know this as a REAL MOROCCAN ,but let us zoom)This is recognized by the whole world(USA in the first place. you know why? : Because they are OBSERVING through many ways, otherwise,Hilary Clinton(US Government) wouldn't appreciate the Kings speech ) exept those who are against Morocco either because it represents a challenge for them in a way(SPAIN); or because it represents a challenge for them in another(Algeria/Polizario combination). And if i'm invited to classify you in these two sides, i will simply say that you are neither from these nor from those but you are in the middle, selecting what suites you from this side and the other, stringing them together to form your own version of reality.
One things impressed me in your comment:the "hundreds of Sahrawis in Layoune beaten and killed late last year". First, there was no Moroccan sahrawi killed but who was killed is 11 of force members.Second, those Moroccan Sahrawi people are used as a weapon not only by you, but by all the countries or , lets be more specific, governments, which are intrested in finding a way both, to abort the process of development in Morocco (Spain) and to cause Morocco to lose his territorial integrity. And i think that you will be more convinced when you listen to the speech of Mr Lincoln Diaz-Balart in the Congres about the event http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTQllAx2aTs .

flasshy: It is interesting that you posted your comment a dozen times, pushing the truth down as far as you can so it cannot be easily revealed to those who might be interested. This a common tactic of Moroccan monarchical agents (makhzen), who also have hacked into and sabotaged websites of pro-democracy groups in Morocco. It is difficult for any change to come about when agents of the monarchy sabotage, harass, taunt, and litigate those who speak the truth or express a reasonable opinion about topics you consider taboo. Those who are courageously facing up to the makhzen in Morocco do want change as quickly as possible, and it is true that small steps are being taken by some in power. But those who are invested in the status quo hold all the cards, and determine the timing and the process. Note that you do not deny or address any of the substantive questions and concerns posed below, just attack personally and sabotage, which is the last resort of those who do not want to deal with the truth and address substantive issues of injustice.

you guys are such jealous and dishonest people. This man is an extremelly smart, competent and hard working man as well as all his family that give everything to their country. their contribution to the improvement is considerable, more than any other family in morocco. Also your comment about the fact that the fassi fihri family benefits largely FINANCIALLY from the moarchy is completely erroneous. Look around you dummie, who are the richest people in morocco? not the fassi fihris ? how can you judge someone that does so much for your country you ingrateful dummie? what do you do for your country ? nothing because you are a stupid selfish envious and jealous person. Every person in that family is a genious and thats because of their education, humility and large contribution to the well being of their country. because unlike you they care about their country. you think things can change in one day ? it takes decades and sometimes centuries. go act and do good things instead of running your poisonous mouths. these guys are doing great things in small steps because its the only way to do it.

Yasquare: Your comment about Fassi-Fihiri and family being one of the privileged who benefits financially from monarchical largess is right on the money (so to speak). I believe TelQuel published the listing of a handful of families in Morocco who have benefited the most from so-called privatization; it was in Summer 2010 issue, and the Fassi-Fahiri family is one of them. I am disappointed that Charlie Rose and his producers did not do more background research on the situation in Morocco, and instead provided a platform for the monarchy's very well oiled marketing machine (as you so aptly put it).

@HichamSmith, well done!
Those questions are well posed and answers would reveal the actual ongoing situation in morocco!

HichamSmith 03/26/2011 08:58 AM Report
Charlie--You could have asked Mr. Fassi-Fihiri more pointed questions about what is actually taking place in Morocco, rather than tossing him softball questions that allow him to present such a distorted view. Here are some questions I and many others who know Morocco well would have liked to hear:
1) Why have hundreds of thousands of Moroccans from across the political spectrum demonstrated in the streets in all major cities on 2/20/11, 3/20/11 and will again on 4/24/11 despite the King's assurances about a constitutional convention? What ministers' photographs have been openly burned during demonstrations, and why?
2) Why was the head of the Moroccan Association of Human Rights beaten in the street, along with many other human rights activists, on 2/21/11 by security forces? Why have unemployed doctors and engineers been beaten in the street over the last decade whenever they have peacefully protested the lack of jobs? Why were hundreds of Sahrawis in Layoune beaten and killed late last year when they were protesting peacefully?
3) How and why is the King sanctified in the Constitution of the Kingdom of Morocco, such that comments about him or anyone associated with him (or, for that matter, anything associated with him) construed as liable and used as basis for arrest, fines and imprisonment?
4) Why have journalists and human rights activists who have tested the red lines (sanctified monarch, territorial integrity, Islam as State religion) civilly through public discourse and actions, with no threat to the King or anyone else, been harassed, litigated, arrested, and imprisoned? Why is liable a criminal rather than civil offense in the Moroccan Code?
5) Why have hundreds if not thousands of Islamists who have committed no crimes been detained and imprisoned without an opportunity to mount a legitimate defense?
6) Why, after twelve years on the throne pontificating about poverty and illiteracy, has the King done nothing much about the highest illiteracy rates in the Arab world? Why is it in the monarchy's interest to keep so many rural and urban young people (especially girls) poor and illiterate? Why is nothing being done about child labor, even though it is against the law?
7) What are the monarchy's direct investments in the economy? How much of the privatization that has taken place benefited the King's cronies? How many palaces does he own (12 or more?) and what are they worth?
8) Why was testimony during the IER hearings about the Years of Lead (1970s & 1980s) that named perpetrators of torture and disappearances not allowed? What have the books now been closed after the IER submitted its report? How have the monarchy and the interior ministry, with its brutal security forces, made repression appear to take place within the rule of law?
There are many more questions such as these that could reveal how the King of Morocco is an authoritarian just like his father despite the "cloaking" of him by agents such as Mr. Fassi-Fihiri, and diplomats such as Hilary Clinton. He, like his father, is a ruthless dictator who has no intent whatsoever of giving up power without a fight, especially his Constitutional sanctification that allows him to be above the law.

Amazing discourse from someone that is supposed to know the moroccan society. Well, being moroccan, I could say that this person is really telling some bullshits.
First, he said that morocco has chosen a libertarian politics in order to avoid what is happening nowadays in arab countries. Freedom to pretest, freedom of expression... and so on. I think he is talking about another country may be he missed that it is about morocco
Multi parties? When we know that the traditional opposition parties have been depleted during the last 50 years and now have come to a situation where they really lost hope to make change. No opportunity to propose anything. The King is the maestro of the Government. Even if "transparent" election are organized but the hick is that the king who is choosing the ministers and other senior officials... And guess what? All those are Al Fihri's relatives.
In this sequence M Al Fihri is just executing a very nice exercise of modern political "marketing"!

From a transcript full of hope:
TAIEB FASSI-FIHRI:
.......... There is a possible combination between the power and the people looking for the best for the country. And there is some pressure first by the political party but also by the leadership. And that’s why I said that the monarchy in Morocco is a dynamic one. Because they open the door to everyone to contribute for the progress and the door is open also at the same time for a good working on human development.
.
A job for every youth and fair income for every job -- will be a beginning.
After that, will we find a balance between "law and order" and "law and equity"?
Will we find a balance between competition run amok and competition contained by what Taieb Fassi-Fihri kept referring to THE RULES OF THE GAME?
Here we heard the voice of reason and well-informed diplomacy. No doubt the coming of an Arab Summer after this tumultuous Spring is not certain -- and is not known by any of us or any others.
But Taieb Fassi-Fihri leaves us optimistic. As, in my opinion, does Hillary Clinton, who is on her way to the Nobel Prize for Peace if the rest of us have any luck.
REMant 03/25/2011 11:09 AM Report
The problem is that the no-fly zone has become a no-drive zone, and, probably, a no-win zone. I don't see how greater Arab participation makes any of this more palatable, nor apparently has the US admin, which just sent there the USS Bataan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Bataan_(LHD-5)a helicopter landing dock ship which normally carries a battalion and half of marines, and two support vessels. While they could be involved, as they have been, in humanitarian missions, I tend to doubt it.
If anything the crackdown on Qaddafi has encouraged rather than discouraged those in other countries to do the same, if they think they can get away with it. I suspect Morocco expects to be one of the latter. The country has a lot of European retirees living there now, like Americans in Mexico, which no doubt increases its chances. Whether their presence will be good in the long run for the indigenous population remains to be seen, altho I'm certain the globalizers think so.
