I am not commenting on this episode of the CR show, but rather taking this opportunity to ask for a Charlie Rose interview of a one, 'Donald Rumsfeld'. Last night's, 'diane Sawyer's interview' of the former Sec. of Defense was despicable. Diane Sawyer has the IQ of a bag of rocks. Just total Vague questioning (maybe that's how ole Rummy wants it?). I'm sure Charlie Rose would ask him how and why did the War in Iraq do a COMPLETE 180 degree turn FOR THE BETTER, after that 'academic' (as he called her) 'Condoleeza Rice' took over the reins from him. How and Why did it Happen THAT WAY???

Ignatius seemed to be engaging in a little damage control here, which I believe I've detected in a lot of his writing recently. He is, of course, a VIP at the Post. But I do think Obama's attitude has generally been informed by the idea that the people of the world are oppressed. If he didn't get it growing up in Indonesia, in the political correctness which grips our educational system, then in the streets and churches of Chicago. He undoubtedly also picked up the value of affirmative action. That concept, however, assumes a competitiveness plus a primitivism, both of which we can do without.
While I am sure that men in govt and uniform everywhere mean to do well, what they have done has had its unanticipated consequences, the same as the bankers and businessmen, and ultimately a virtuous republic is something people must make for themselves. When ppl must do things for themselves, they learn the correct measure of their abilities, and the value of others, and the selfishness diminishes in proportion. There's a strong tendency in the human animal, however, to do things that just make the bad worse, which, of course, eventuates in a downward spiral, so real freedom and opportunity require constant self-appraisal. I noted, BTW, much more judicious phrasing in the president's remarks Friday. And the BBC reported one former Israeli general to the effect that his country had better get with it.

Most of the media-talk this week has been too mournfully reminiscent of the 2008 table-talk regarding "the financial crisis": "What is going on here?", .."What is going to happen?", .."What can anyone do??????"
Aren't there any "community organizers" available to encourage a troubled world community toward the "exceptionalism" of being a country which has a Constitution prescribing a regular and peaceful transfer of power through elections?
Rather than threaten President Mubarak with sanctions, why don't we actively campaign for his solution of stepping down this September, and peacefully transferring power to a democratically elected leader?
Please, let us not work to "align the United States with the way the world is now moving", as was suggested here; but let's instead try and help "align the movers of the world with the process of democracy".
One Egyptian demonstrator held up a placard reading "YES WE CAN". That is exactly what needs to be encouraged. Let's ask their public to accept Mubarak's "peace-plan" of honest, fair, and regular elections. Let's ask that educated populace to put forth 2 or 3 "people's candidates", debate their issues, and then elect the future they desire.
I don't believe this week's events are primarily about "the Cairo Speech", "The Muslim Brotherhood", or even "the Palestinian Problem", ..those protestors argued for food, housing, and jobs! (Just like in America!!)
Let's make the decision to march forward together!
