Roger Cohen who has misinterpreted events in Iran and Turkey now goes to Egypt. He is less bad here but still puts his own liberal Western mind into worlds which have much else in them. He does not instance speak about what is going with the largest organized opposition group, the Muslim Brotherhood. If they should take over by democratic means the Egyptians will have the same kind of 'democracy' Hamas has given to Gaza.

I would make one more point about Peace and Dignity. The Egyptian people did not 'choose peace' with Israel. Anwar Sadat did. But it has been a very strange Peace in which the Egyptian media under Mubarrak also have unleashed a continuous anti- Semitic barrage against Jews and Israel. Cold peace is better than none. But had the Egyptians showed a warmer and welcoming side to the peace process with Israel it is possible their own society would be better off now.

I hope they make a Democracy and Freedom which respects others and wishes to live in Peace with them. But I am not at all sure this is going to happen.

      This is interesting:

"There was more traffic, banks opened at least for a couple of hours, and the government immediately put through a 15 percent pay rise, the government workers, in an attempt to calm things."

A 15 percent pay raise? Immediately? Are the Egyptians eating? What percentage of all this is the economy?
