Egypt's eruption is rooted not in Tunisia, but the USA and ultimately to the financial wise-guys, aka Wall St. Our undisciplined bankers of egregious greed and profit put the world's ec. in the toilet, pushing the already weak over the brink and into the streets. Pushed them under the $2.00/day poverty line and into the streets. And under the proverbial bus (of impoverishment).
The Wall St. fat cats know this. They watched it from their full-wall TVs aboard their Bahama based yachts (tax-free), chortling up their fat-filled sleeves.
Economically driven for now. [But] It will doubtless coalesce into a (opportunistic) religious fanaticism. Ironic that future ME mayhem may well have its roots with NYC fat cats.

In the American revolution, the fundamentalists, if you will, sided with the king, against the revolutionaries, for religious reasons, as in fact they largely do now. I suspect that is the case with the Islamists, too. In addition to our "uncomfort" regarding the Arab strongmen, we also have the concurrent release of the so-called "Palestine Papers," (http://english.aljazeera.net/palestinepapers/2011/01/201112618289133202.html) which clearly show the US and several govts in the region twisting the arm of the Palestinian Authority, or colluding with them against the radicals. Malley, no doubt, has known this for a long time. To many others this confirms these governments are the American puppets they thought, and no longer representative of current concerns. While some may characterize this as a revolution of rising expectations, it is being pressed by rising commodity and food prices, which those protesters believe must be the fault of men they have long despised. When they find out otherwise, their stance may change radically. Even so, they are probably no match for the Islamists.
