Mr Morris certainly did a thorough job with 3 part biography. He is however as dull and monomaniac as his subject was colorful and versatile.

Eidetic memory it's called. Prevalent in children, but declines over the years, probably with the overlaying accompanying conceptualization and the development of language skills. There is ample evidence tho that under certain circumstances long ago events can be recalled in detail, which suggests the basic information remains. I had a pretty good eidetic memory when I was young, and it shocked me returning to school after military service to no longer be able to cram for tests the way I had. The relative ease of multiple choice vs fill-in-the-blanks or essay tests is testimony to it, as well. Of course, the more previous knowledge a person has, the easier it is to assimilate new information, but this is not eidetic, which is either a visual mapping, or some similar special capability, such as for music or arithmetic. I should add tho, that TR belonged to generations brought up learning to memorize the classics.
