I haven't had a tv in years so ages since I've seen Charlie Rose in action but I always appreciated his programs. I'm embarrassed on his behalf by this interview with the Duchess of Devonshire, however which I just found on line. He is positively rude in cutting in, redirecting, dismissing ('so you had three children' 'and three more--' 'miscarriages' 'well, they died young' -- 'so let's talk about the chickens'). She is gracious throughout, as he pushes her to talk about Unity's suicide attempt but let's not hear more about the aftermath, how about Jessica's communism? And let's not hear more about her activism, how about being a duchess? It's a sensationalizing interview that is beneath him and patronizes his guest and audience.

I'm half-way through the book, after waiting for it from the library. It was a completely delightful interview and the same is true of the book, especially her childhood. What a treasure she is! I'm going to read her other books. Thank you Charlie for a lovely change of pace.

A wonderful guest. So interesting to hear and see one of the Mitford sisters. What an amazing family. And the Duchess is so self-effacing. Goodness! the people she has known and is related to!
And, yes, I, too, winced at Charlie's pronunciation of Devonshire. It's Dev on sure, Charlie.

Oh, that fleeting, subtle wince on her face, the constrained swallow, when Mr. Rose says "Duchess of "Devon-shahyuhr"! You'd think he might have bothered.
