I think Stalin really believed he was defending the revolution, like Mugabe, perhaps Castro, and many others, not a belief that L'État, c'est moi. To think otherwise strikes me as placing too much faith in the Russian ppl, which clearly seems unwarranted. The problem, of course, is that this is self-reinforcing. As a matter of policy it certainly seems to me that siding with Medvedev or Putin is a mistake, whatever you think of their views, and I would not be surprised if the admin believes Putin to be reactionary. But the big problem in Russia is the people, and the course of development, as it is in China and every other country. During the Cold War we assumed that nation was a threat to humanity because of the attitudes of a minority, and afterwards that they they were perfect capitalists, and, of course, neither was true.
