After 50 years of AI we are proud to have come up with a better vacuum cleaner? Is this the field all the vacuum cleaner salesmen of the 50's went into?

Eric Horvitz: "I believe that in the long term, we will understand principles of thinking like we understand principles of ... the gravitational laws that define how planets move...." Hmmm. So Eric looks forward to a science of thought, huh? Maybe he's right, but it's been an issue since the European Enlightenment. David Hume's Treatise of Human Nature opens with a similar goal for understanding, though Hume thought he could do it in the short term.
