The Sporting News was founded in 1886. SI only in 1954. Since the former was (and still is) the "Bible" of baseball, and baseball was for so many years the only widely popular pro sport, I'd guess it took the emergence of the others to support another publication. There had never been a shortage of movie and music fan magazines, and the Daily Racing Form began publication in 1894, Field & Stream a year later, The Ring in 1922, Road & Track in 1947, Golf Digest in 1950. College sports coverage doesn't seem to have ever caught on, on a national basis. SI is, tho, IMHO, basically a fan magazine, about sports stars more than sports, and survives on its interviews, as well as, of course, the swimsuit edition. This was made clear when Sports Illustrated for Kids was begun. I find it rather detestable.
