Why is anyone condemning Ms Belancourt? How can anyone place themselves in her shoes? Six years held in captivity...four years chained around her neck! Children and family thing about her every moment for six years! Incredible story. Tale of survival, courage and the strength of human will.

if you don't have to deal with it and lawyers can do it all i would just go for the 6.8 million it's not even that much money out here there are houses that cost 6.8 million just for one house who cares what people in some place somewhere that doesn't even exist think i could be wrong but truthfully i doubt you'll ever go back and live in that country it's sort of like things aren't linear you can just fade away into a whole different life and awareness of what the world is it'll probably take longer than you expect and just to rest and be healthy and create a whole new world from nothing i don't think necessarily things have to build up to something your whole life it can be like a dream like you wake up or fall asleep into something totally different two years isn't that much time the past doesn't even really exist it only applies to the physical state you are in right now which is still unrelated

AGREED...
"Blase" not "blaze". And enough already. But, while I do appreciate your "assumption", let's not assume. "You may be right; I might be crazy...." (to quote an old rock n' role tune). Ciao for now.

Blase not blaze - a misspoke. Lets assume she even saved their sorry asses and put this to bed.

"NOT WITH EQUANIMITY"
Is it that you would be happier, were she to behave publicly and privately at the level of the genre of The Jerry Springer Show? Is it that you are so cynical that you deny the possibility, that she is a stronger soul than you give her credit? Is it that you are so cynical, that you think she is an absolute liar and did not truly suffer? Is it that you cannot appreciate that she may yet be headed for a breakdown (wouldn't you enjoy just such a spectacle on the Charlie Rose Show? What a story that would be...)? Is it that you cannot tolerate that you may not be privy to whatever medical treatment(s) may make her "equanimity" possible? Methinks it is your thinking that is "blaze" -- not Ingrid Betancourt. And I remind you that those, who have degraded her, are much alive, despite their fears that she would be the cause of their demise.
robdverity 10/27/2010 01:01 AM Report
NOT WITH EQUANIMITY - WHICH IS MY POINT. She was too blaze about it to be credible. She's duplicitous. And I'm betting not a nice person. Prob. no more than an afternoon - to provide her fodder for the claim. Getting more ink than deserves.

RE: "EQUANIMITY"
Robdverity: How would you respond to being tied to a tree for four years?
robdverity 10/26/2010 05:26 PM Report
"Whatever her behavior, it is not impossible that her behavior contributed to all their survival, and there is likely much that may never be told."
Well she did say she was tied to a tree for four years - with equanimity. Atrophied and selfless to a fault, I'm sure the Americans resentment is totally misplaced. She just has to be a heroine of the first order. Go Ingrid!
BENEZRAA 10/25/2010 09:42 PM Report
STRETCHING
Robdverity, if I am stretching, may I stretch a little bit further? For all their fears and their loathing of Ingrid Betancourt, all three American hostages are alive and well, are they not? Fifteen hostages were freed that day altogether. Whatever her behavior, it is not impossible that her behavior contributed to all their survival, and there is likely much that may never be told.
robdverity 10/25/2010 06:28 PM Report
You're stretching BEN. But so be it. I'm guilty re the apocalypse mentality. The human species rushes daily to depart from humanness imo. Betancourt is only a minor contributor (but indeed yet another one). Our own venal system is more disheartening. Her throwing the American captives under the bus is symptomatic of our pols (witness the campaigns) trashing each other for a place at the fed trough. Mankind is hurtling into its own self-made cesspool.
Peevish point. You claim I'm asleep and unconscious yet require the excitement of Roman gladiators. Stet or edit?
Well maybe not. Perhaps you're right.

ROBDVERITY
You may scratch your own self-satisfied itch. That you compare Ingrid Betancourt to Ahmadinijad is disgusting on so many levels. Mr. Rose was tough enough on Ahmadinijad that Ahmadinijad, who loves to hear himself talk and who may even believe his own b.s., is more and more exposed, as Mr. Rose give Ahmadinijad the rope piece by piece with which Ahmadinijad may hang himself. Your statement that you are "taking a nap" is an oxymoron in that you are already asleep and unconscious. You strike me more and more as someone, who requires the excitement of a Roman competition of gladiators fighting to the death or of lions consuming helpless persons in an arena in order to catch a vicarious thrill and a sensation of being alive. Get a life!
robdverity 10/24/2010 04:27 PM Report
Is it ipso facto if your on CR you deserve respect? Ahmedinijad included? Charlie was respectful to him as well. You repect her since it scratches a self-satisfied itch apparently. I'm taking a nap myself.

ROBDVERITY:
I may or may not be a narcissist; Ingrid Betancourt may or may not be a narcissist; to whatever extent and depth Ingrid Betancourt has faced her own demons, and to whatever extent she herself may or may not own up to her own trauma and response to trauma, there is no doubt that she suffered terribly. As to you, did you go to Wikipedia before or after the her interview with Mr. Rose? Did you read any other articles, let alone her books? Did you read any other articles or books by the three Americans or anyone else, who may be critical of her? It doesn't really matter; by quoting Wikipedia, you give proof, that Ingrid Betancourt's complexities are available for review, and that Mr. Rose was most tasteful in his respect of her.
robdverity 10/21/2010 05:53 PM Report
Stansell of her actions, "We could have been executed because she wanted more space in camp for herself."[70]
Compare that to four-years-tied-to-a-tree. Pathological!
robdverity 10/21/2010 05:47 PM Report
BEN - From Wikipedia: (per online research)
In their book titled Out of Captivity, American Northrop Grumman contractors Marc Gonsalves, Keith Stansell, and Thomas Howes, all of whom spent time as hostages with Ingrid, described Betancourt's behavior as a captive of FARC as selfish, feeling she deserved better treatment than the other captives due to her political and social standing. The Americans, held captive by the FARC from 2003 to 2008, stated that throughout their captivity Betancourt claimed and took more than her fair share of scarce food, clothing, and personal space.[68] Stansell said, "I can get over just about anything, but I dont know about Ingrid. Forgive? Yes. Move on? Yes. Respect? No."[69] The Americans also allege in the book that during her captivity, Betancourt carried-on an ongoing affair with fellow captive Luis Eladio "Lucho" Perez.
In one instance, according to Stansell, Betancourt, who apparently did not want the Americans accommodated in the same jail as her, told the FARC guards that the three Americans were working for the CIA, had tracking microchips embedded in their bodies, and should be isolated and watched closely. Said Stansell of her actions, "We could have been executed because she wanted more space in camp for herself."[70]
Betancourt declined to comment on the Americans' allegations. A spokesperson for her said that she was "dedicated to writing her own book and not making declarations until it is finished."[71]
When her book was released, she denied the accusations and claimed that the FARC guards had deliberately lied to the three Americans by claiming that she told them they were CIA agents.
Ben: She's as narcissistic as suspected under that "confusing demeanor." Your "Respectfully" puts you in the same class. Anything for the galaries.

SHOW A LITTLE DISCRETION, ROBDVERITY...
You may research Ingrid Betancourt online and read articles about her that will fill in details pertaining to her "complex person". Give respect and credit to Mr. Rose and to Mrs. Betancourt for the taste, elegance, and discretion with which they publicly discussed delicate matters. May I remind you to transcend your habit of "shooting first" only to ask questions later? Respectfully, Benezraa.

She is, if memory serves, a much more complex person than revealed here. I found it interesting that she believes the FARC to be both a Mafia and a revolutionary cadre, which I would not think really possible, tho it is common enough in ppl of her persuasion. She undoubtedly thinks the right-wing to be just as bad. caustic soda

She handled 4-yrs to-a-tree too easily. Ablutions, toileting, exercising? Something's missing. Vascillated on wanting to buy her and questioning her. Edge to RELATIVE favoritism perhaps in her individual case? Confused by her demeanor I guess.

IS THERE A WEBSITE FOR THE INGRID BETANCOURT FOUNDATION?
Ingrid Betancourt's telling of her experiences is compelling. Mr. Rose conducted a sensitive and "elegant" conversation. The description of FARC society, especially with respect to FARC ownership of children signaled by the forced separation of children from their mothers at three months of age, is the description of a dehumanized society modeled upon industrial-scale animal husbandry. Ingid Betancourt is an extraordinary person and would be welcomed in my home town as a guest or as a citizen. Good luck to Ingrid Betancourt and to the Ingrid Betancourt Foundation.
