REMant, form doesn't always follow function. I collect Memphis-Milano design from the 80s and the designers created pieces intentionally to challenge the "form follows function" design thinking. I live with and use each piece daily and they do function as the item is intended, such as a bookcase or chair, lamp, etc. in an interesting, fun way and was meant to be a fad even by the founder Ettore Sottsass.

No, I think, in the end, "form" always follows function, tho it in turn, of course, reveals the design or form of nature. One must be careful about the terms. Function is what is revealed by the design of nature, it does not determine it. Form as we use the term is most often exactly something forced. In the 1970's ppl neglected function, which is why they were wrong about everything. The interesting thing is that it was those terrible, dogmatic Germans and Japanese who came closer to the right idea.
The jet thing was first designed by Bell Aerosystems in the 1950's for the army. Was called the Rocket Lift Device (SRLD) or Rocket Belt http://www.flatrock.org.nz/topics/flying/jet_belt.htm I think I saw one demonstrated at the annual Andrews AFB Open House back then.
