Re his proposed book on early child care: Why is David Brooks repeating the already clean, well-written "A General Theory of Love" by Thomas Lewis et al? I never thought Brooks was the type of New Yorker who liked to draw attention to himself by, for example, repeating what others more qualified have concluded.

Why doesn't he spend some time and corral legislators, funders and other relevant decision makers to set up programs as advocated in the UCLA work of (?) Ward in "Head Start is Too Late". This would go a long way to heading off future inadequate child care and the problems that grow from it.

    3. NeilMacCallister  09/26/2010 04:11 AM Report

"Apples and oranges", doodah? ..What are you talking about?

What is the apple?? ..and what is the orange????

      ***

But since you're speaking of apples:

Adam and Eve started in the Garden of Eden, where there was food aplenty, and anyone had only but to reach out and pick their own food, ..as much as they wanted, or did not want.

'Original Sin' was introduced as one person picked an apple and gave it to someone else to eat.

Was that story trying to tell us something very basic about life?

    4. doodah  09/25/2010 04:30 PM Report

Apples to oranges, fellas. Apples to oranges.

      And to each their own.

Republican politicians seem to revel in 'being out'; can shoot spit-balls at the President and not be responsible for ANYTHING that has happened in 'recent memory'.

They're going to cut spending and balance the budget and reduce the debt. And IT will 'bring back' the economy! Strike up the band! Hooray! Hoorah! .. LMAO! . Yeah right, and I got a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell ya!!!

    5. jason  09/24/2010 07:36 PM Report

      Neil,

Problem is, President Obama also serves as POTUS (Ponzi of the United States). He and the liberal left got it right, "two unfunded wars" but they stopped to continue .... the unfunded medicare/aid, the unfunded social security, the unfunded but extremely generous public employee pension... whereas National Defense budget is only 20% of national spending, entitlement spending is 60%!! and the entitlement is a big ponzi scheme. So, Obama added in "national health care", one more unfunded mandate. Big Ponzi scheme that landed Madoff a life term. For Obama, we just need to give him a ONE TERM!!! -:)

    6. NeilMacCallister  09/24/2010 05:17 PM Report

Yes, integrity is all we have, doodah, ..but where are you pointing Mr. Babson's gun?

I criticized this episode's continuing to declare President Obama a "misunderstood genius", ..and Mr. Brooks arguing that President Obama is doing "great things for our country", but then side-lighting that "yes, it will all lead to economic catastrophe in 10 years".

Did Mr. Babson ever hear anything so in need of integrity?

      ***

On the campaign trail, Candidate Obama promised us voters 2 things:

"If you vote for me, you and I will be on the same healthcare plan."

"If you vote for me, I will hire a youth job corps."

But now, 2 years later, Barack Obama is still receiving and enjoying a public-supplied healthcare plan which is much better than mine, .. and there is still no Youth Job Corps.

Where's the "integrity" in that, doodah?

      ***

The first TARP bailout paid off the investment houses which sold those bad home mortgages, ..and today's news reveals that the institutional investors who bought those "securities" are now arranging their own tax-payer supplied bailout.

The people who are NOT being helped, are the millions of now marginally employed American homeowners who are still being told to "be sure and keep up with those payments on your 100% over-priced homes, ..or we will kick you out"!

Is this the honest government we asked for, doodah?

    7. doodah  09/23/2010 12:27 PM Report

"Integrity is the mother of knowledge. The desire for truth is the basis

of all learning, the value of all experience and the reason for all

study and investigation. Without integrity as a basis, our entire

educational system would fall to the ground; all newspapers and

magazines would become sources of great danger and the publication of

books would have to be suppressed. Our whole civilization rests upon the

assumption that people are honest. With this confidence shaken, the

structure falls. And it should fall, for, unless the truth be taught,

the nation would be much better off without its schools, newspapers,

books and professions. Better have no gun at all, than one aimed at

yourself. The corner-stone of prosperity is the stone of Integrity." - Roger W. Babson, excerpt from 'Fundamentals of Prosperity'

    8. doodah  09/23/2010 11:58 AM Report

So voting for republican 'rhetoric' is the 'feel good' drug for what ails you.?. .. I wish you Good luck too, b/c I get the feeling that's all the politicians (repubs & demagogues) can really HONESTLY promise.

I'll vote for the first politician, who can just smile (MAKE NO PROMISES) and just say, 'Good Luck'. ;)

I used to follow blindly and tow the 'republican' 'conservative' line, back in the day, with Ronald Reagen and all (and thought 'the philosophy was etched in stone). And then I saw the economy turn around AFTER Clinton raised taxs (what's with that?!!)(hell!, I'm not complaining though; not 'defending' clinton, either). It just puts a huge hole in the politicians' 'conservative' argument (that one size fits all). That just maybe, reality is shades of grey.?.

You want to read a fascinating book? Read, 'Looking Ahead 50 Years', by Roger W. Babson. It was written in 1942. With the benefit of God-like hindsight, it will expand your mind (at least it did mine) (a new take on history and reality).

    9. NeilMacCallister  09/23/2010 11:15 AM Report

It's not a question of anger, doodah, ..it's a question of accounts.

If you like the printing of money, the trillion dollar deficits, the unemployment, and the taking of 3rd and 4th mortgages on America's future, ..well, go ahead and vote for whomever you like to try and make this government feel good.

The truth will show in the long run.

Good luck, ..hope to see you there.

    10. doodah  09/23/2010 08:29 AM Report

That's why republicans will not get my vote in the foreseeable future. Ignoring and trying to downplay the REAL causes of the financial crisis really pisses me off (like Americans are complete idiots with a memory of 2 days) (which many apparently are), but I won't be one of them.

And I'm betting that if the "tea party" turns out to be just the far right of the repugnantcan party. By election time, the electorate will have sobered up enough to recognize 'it' for what it is, 'overpaid professional-politicians POSING as Christians' to gain trust. (about the lowest form of politician there is) (and that's pretty damn low). A real Cristian (with any intelligence) wouldn't have to do that to get elected.

    11. NeilMacCallister  09/22/2010 07:20 PM Report

No, doodah, ..President Obama has just spent $3 trillion lavish dollars, and has "earmarked" $10 trillion more future dollars for his continued purchase desires.

Novelists have long recognized that as the self-destructive impulse of the "nouveau riche".

And isn't that EXACTLY what caused the housing bubble in the first place?

      ***

John McCain promised us that he would address "wasteful Congressional spending", ..but I guess we citizens didn't want that just yet.

Sarah Palin had more balls, ..she would have FORCED us to spend less of our children's and our grandchildren's money.

..but Katie Curic convinced us that was nothing but some kind of "stupid" moral foundation.

      ***

Did you hear, doodah??? ..Just today, a now third Obama "financial wizard" has decided to quit the "Obama Economic Recovery Team".

Who has REALLY been on the path to "stupid" economics, Ms. Katie Curic????

    12. doodah  09/21/2010 04:12 PM Report

I have to disagree with you, Neil. President Obama took the 'conservative' route, by working with what basicly what was handed to him. Geitner was being 'groomed' by Paulson 2 years before the election. And Obama continued on the path that Bush and McCain (assuming McCain wouldn't have panicked and done something majorly retarded) would have done. That's just the fact. . Sure it's easy to see in the rear view mirror and criticize. and ponder into deeper philosophical correctness. But the reality on the ground, is go with the flow; too many dynamics collididing and uncharted territory to boldly 'fix the problem' with a snap of the fingers.

What would Sarah do or not do to improve the situation? Cut spending and lower taxs.?. And deregulate. ...There was a time when I believed in ALL that bullshit. And I still don't believe I was wrong to. Because there is a time and a place for everything; and the time for that 'formula' is NOT NOW. MOVE ON!

    13. NeilMacCallister  09/20/2010 11:45 PM Report

No, anne, ..I don't believe this was a "great conversation".

America needs government directed "clusters" to raise our children into prosperity??? (..and this guy says he admires George Orwell?????????)

We need to get the government off the backs of working families!!!

Charlie repeats his 'running-joke' line: "President Obama just can't seem to fully communicate his personal genius to the American people."

What?? ..he's not smart enough to figure out a way to do that?????

David regurgitates: "The President is doing all the right things financially, ..but yes, we are going to have another economic crisis in ten years."

Gee, ..I'm sure glad our President is not making a mistake by running us into the poor house!!!

      ***

I thought these fellows were supposed to be prime examples of America's "intellectual elite"??? ..Have they inhaled too much New York City car exhaust?

David says that we just all need to "trust government" more, ..then he tells us that his job of coming up with a newspaper column every 3 days, is just "..so hard!"

Then they both slapped each other on the back, and headed off to Sardi's and the Met.

      ***

      Sarah??? ..We need you!!!!

    14. anne4444  09/20/2010 09:15 PM Report

      It was a great conversation.

I may be able to help you with explanation of Obama’s formality. He might find out earlier than Bush…that… the advisers have their own interests instead of this country’s interest as whole.

Money spent on presidential campaign, has its payback period of 4 years term..

    15. doodah  09/19/2010 08:54 AM Report

JG! :) So we meet again!

So where do I sign up for this exclusive cult you're starting. :). Sounds like Utopia, just reach right up and pluck that money right off the trees, with no inflation (so we don't have to 'pluck' all god dam day just to buy a loaf of bread). I have to warn ya though, when you give me the silver bullet, I'm more likely to use it on someone else, and it won't be somebody 'innocent', I'll guarantee you that.

So where do I sign? :-)

    16. JohnGelles  09/19/2010 08:21 AM Report

Rose, Brooks, Geithner, the President, and most of the rest of the world's economy are content to find money to save the banks and AIG, with alarming speed and ease.

Money to fight a major war would be found even faster.

Money to improve the lot of the working and middle classes, and to reach full employment in fact, is slow to be found and slow to be spent -- the poor slobs who lost the most, like a job, a home and all hope of a good retirement, are offered the silver bullet. Not the bullet of debt reorganization and fiat money to motivate recovery at the speed of light. But the bullet to put your lights out.

We are entering a golden age of progress based on science and engineering. But we drag behind us the heavy anchors of law and economics. Since I'm a lawyer and an economist its only fair that I go first. To tell the President and the rest--it's not racism that that's in our way. It's just the plain heavy hand of history. Ever since money replaced the slave-drivers lash, we have been perfecting wage slavery and debt-based money as the devils tools.

Charlie Rose-- you and David are a pair. Words of scorn fail me. What you both need is six months in the shoes of the people who hurt and you don't help.

    17. jason  09/18/2010 08:10 PM Report

While Liberal Democrats promote liberal programs, Brooks is the kind of "Conservative" talking heads who promote the same liberal agenda albeit at slower pace. This is his so called "moderate" or "cross the aisle". As a voter, if I want bigger government, more liberal agenda, from social policy to immigration, I vote Democrat. I have no use for Republican/Conservative. I vote Conservative/Republican because I do not want the Liberal programs. If I ordered steak, don't try to give me that soy based 'steak'.

    18. Slim  09/18/2010 02:15 PM Report

Boy oh boy, here we go again--two white guys critiqueing a black president, and as if that wasn't enough, then totally ignoring both race; as the primary though hidden problem conservative and liberal whites have with him; and black opinion from the discussion. I don't know what kind of "Alice in Wonderland" mentality currently being pedeled by the mainstream media, and apparently reflected by the only portion of the electorate receptive to such an idiotic and racist narrative. The perverse holding of this president and his administration responsible for the prior eight years of Republican malafeasense as well as their foot dragging obstructionist stance on everything advanced to reverse the disaster, in the mere 18 months he has been in office, shows the cynicism and perversion of the opposition. Black America has been quiet for the past 18 months, watching White America use any pretext to jin up opposition to not only a black president but also to black aspiration and progress in a country backsliding in its commitments to fairness and equality for all citizens; for the umpteenth time. Perhaps it is naive to expect those who have enjoyed priviledge and power for so long to equitably share it without struggle and bloodshed, that unfortunately appears to be where this nation is headed.

    19. Matchbook  09/18/2010 12:42 AM Report

First of all, I always enjoy listening to David Brooks' analyses. Always well thought out are his presentations, and his humility is charming.

I look forward to Mr. Brooks' forthcoming book on consciousness. My question of this topic has to do with questioning the materialism of consciousness. Mr. Brooks said in this interview that the a true miracle is the expression of consciousness from the matter of the brain. However, that does presuppose that consciousness does indeed come from the brain. Of course, if the brain is damaged, thinking is curtailed. But is that proof of the source of consciousness? An analogy of the brain that has been stated before that challenges this notion is to think of the brain as an antenna to receive consciousness rather than be its source. This is to say that there is no way to prove the location of the source of consciousness. The great spiritual traditions of Zen Buddhism, Sufism, Kabala do not purport to know the source of consciousness as a physical location. It is akin to understanding what makes life possible. What makes the amoeba move? Is the amoeba conscious? Is a virus alive? What makes a virus inject its genes into a bacteria? Try to find the location of that motivation. My guess is that no one will ever find it. If we can't find it in a virus, why do we think we can discover the "source" in a human being?

My favorite book on this topic is "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind".

Spirituality exists because not everything can be measured.

    20. doodah  09/17/2010 05:48 PM Report

Always look forward to hearing what David Brooks has to say. He sees and verbalizes very well many subtleties of overall reality. He can tie the dynamic nuances of cosmic waves into a cerebral eureka in a nonchalant matter of fact. .. Hows that? Pops!

    21. charlizecourriers  09/17/2010 05:30 PM Report

Why does Grandpa Rose need to continually burp baby Barrack? Is he worried that the baby's health care program is unfunded? And that the baby may get thrown out with the bath water?

    22. doodah  09/17/2010 05:01 PM Report

5 minutes into this interview, and all I can think is, 'why can't David Brooks be MY Dad?. .. why couldn't Dad talk to me like this?. .I would have been much smarter, and less bruised (Dad mostly talked to me with his fists and feet, when he wasn't yelling).

    23. KatherineG  09/17/2010 04:47 PM Report

Mr. Brooks' ideas are always presented with clarity and insight. Both my liberal and conservative friends find more to agree with than to disagree after listening to him, today's conversation included. Interesting question he asked: how much does leadership really matter?

    24. jnorland  09/17/2010 11:42 AM Report

Is the columnist referred to at the end of this program Maureen Dowd? No last name was mentioned in the conversation.

    25. REMant  09/17/2010 11:14 AM Report

This was so similar to the last Brooks appearance I thought it might be a re-run. But I can't find that one on this website, so if I'm repeating myself, it's your fault.

I learned all this psychology half a century ago and it was hardly new then, but worse than that Brooks has bought the neo-psychoanalytic theory that we should not try to be rational and the similar skeptical empiricism or voluntarism of the sort expounded by Berlin. He is not only not new, he is terribly out-of-date, and that, IMHO is also why he is both a member of the GOP and at the NYT. The can be said for the whole "Charlie Rose Brain Series" travesty, which is well below the standards of even ordinary public TV. I find it hard to merely criticize this, because it is really beneath criticism and because its proponents haven't either the understanding or the humility to speak about it with common diffidence.

If any of these guys were half a smart as they think they are they would be able to see that philosophers like Cicero or Hobbes or Locke knew infinitely more about the subject than the entire psychological profession for the past century put together. They'll find it even in Jefferson's debate between his head and his heart. But, of course, that was a prime illustration of sentimentalism, which for liberals is exactly how it remains. The latter 19th century did indeed exhibit the attitude that many writers have called variously a "block universe," "legal formalism," "Baconism," but it was caused by just this sentimentalism, and it was the associated status anxiety that caused the neurasthenia and hysteria. The answer is no more to throw rationalism overboard, than it would be to throw out structural reforms in the current economic crisis. For all his talk of ids and whatnot, Freud never did. It took ppl like Horney and Fromm to do that. I can sympathize because my friend Chris Lasch made this mistake in "The True and Only Heaven: Progress and its Critics," after his devastating analysis of the so-called helping professions. It is easy to do, because it would seem the human animal is programmed to think, dialectically, Ramist-like, in pairs of opposites, like reason and passion, Left and Right, pro and con, freedom and determinism, etc. But there are clearly three distinct parties or perspectives on life, which I can probably most intelligibly term at the moment Tory, Whig and Republican. In order to understand the last you have to eschew voluntarism of all sorts and think like a Stoic.

Of health care, it should be remembered that it was Clinton's repeated theory that the country could never be economically successful "until health care costs were brought under control." Coupled with Teddy Kennedy's campaign for extending the New Deal, I think you have your answer.

Obama can certainly be faulted for the unabashed way he has accepted the perks of office. It is very poor PR, even if it might play well to Afro-Americans (and I would not be surprised if that's his justification for it). But he should avoid places like Cape Cod like the plague, even the whole of the Northeast.

Yes, the country has been and still is mercantilist. It has never been free trade to any significant extent. The Civil War was in part fought about that. However, David Cameron is in no way a welfare capitalist like Blair. Give me a break. This is either sour grapes, Karl Rove's co-option strategy, or evidence of a brain tumor. But BROOKS is a welfare capitalist and Progressive like Blair, and a monetarist/Keynesian type typical of Wall St. He understands no more about economics than about psychology and I doubt he'll ever understand the Tea Party. Back then he'd have been tarred and feathered and ridden on a rail.
