Very late to post here, I know, but I was very dismayed by Eric Nestler's (?) comment that 12 step is a behavioral program that works. 12 step is a religious program that may be helpful to some, but to call it a treatment is irresponsible.

Huh? Does your monicker suggest a good french-kiss to druggies, criminals and ne'er do-wells would straighten them out? Judges and prosecuters just need to puccer up. What's with courtrooms, jails and prisons? I think I could use a good preventative smooch. I need an overly dedicated female judge ready to do her part in crime prevention. Pucker up America.

The cure for drug addiction is on the ends of the noses of all the male panel members on Charlie Rose's shows on brain function. The shine on a man's nose consists of more than seven hundred different lipids and lipid-like chemicals and most have stereochemical structure oddities like the peculiarities that differentiate butterfly pheromones. One, sebaleic acid (or sapienic acid) is unique in all nature, marking us as human. These are all kissing pheromones, of course. Dangerous thrill-seeking of all sorts is remedied by 150 to 250 mg p.o. of healthy adult male facial skin surface lipid. One dose, taken by mouth, readily cures heroin addiction, cocaine addiction, delinquency, criminal behavior, runaway behavior, and (surprise surprise) sexual perversions including pedophilia and homosexual ideation and behavior. It is a whole new world.

It is just not true that NIH provides funds for research. It is a members only club. We need double-blind, cross-over trials of human male facial skin surface lipid kissing pheromone in treatment of addiction, criminal behavior, and perversions. Applications are delayed, then ignored for clerical reasons until they are finally expunged unfunded.

Great show. Seemed that the recommendation was for methadone type substances. Wondering if researchers have looked at the situation where prescription drug addicts are then also triggered by going to the Dr., then the pharmacy, then taking a drug ( albeit one to bind the receptors and help get back to normal life). The problem as I see it with Suboxone type therapy - harm reduction therapy is that it keeps the drug addict in the swirl of drugs- why don't we go back to British style methadone treatment centers where the process of acquiring the helping drugs stays in a clinical setting. This would also prevent the Suboxone type drugs from becoming street drugs as they sell for 20-40 dollars on the street per pill. Wondering if anyone knows any REHAB or treatment centers that offer long term and excellent care. What do the researchers think of all the " for profit" 25K-55K per month " 30 Day " treatment centers. What about the cycle of Doctor shopping and going to Emergency Rooms to get prescription pain killers? The addicts who have medical insurance get caught up a circle of doctors, emergency rooms, pharmacies, and pills. If they do not have insurance, then the state picks up the ER tab and the emergency measures. The researchers did a magnificent job of elucidating the reasons behind addiction and the enormous difficulties in quitting but can you do a show that is more " in the trenches". Parents waiting for the other shoe to drop? Wondering whether to keep paying for an adult child's medical insurance, where to go after 6-10 different Rehabs and another 6-10 De-tox units have failed? How do families cope with the loss of the child that they used to know? How do parents stop enabling and " do no harm". Really difficult questions. I hope this comment can be sent on to Dr. Volkow and that research can begin to look at the triggers that are built into the system. The scurge of prescription drug addiction is enormous and it co-opts many Doctors into unwilling partners. The cost to our society in both dollars and lost productivity must be in the many billions. I applaud the research in neuro science and hope one day that we will have answers and gene therapies to help the problems of addictionThanks
