No Rob, future events are not "cast in stone". As a world, we will get what we choose. Many nations around the world are concerned right now for the safe security of Pakistan's warheads, and all other warheads in the world.
The problem is not strictly in the warheads themselves, ..but in the prospect of some group of world-abusing nihilists gaining possession of those weapons and waving them around like someone might wave a loaded pistol in a crowded food market.
Pakistan has maintained those weapons safely for years now, and I am thankful that Pakistan has been safe and responsible with them.
But is Pakistan in a state of stress right now? ..Are they fully confident that they can withstand internal and external pressure groups seeking to disrupt their nation?
I hope they will survive as a nation, and continue their safe history for many years.
But if something horrible happens, I am hoping there are responsible nations available to ensure those warheads stay secured.

Pandora's box has been FOREVER blown open. Our species is not capable of safely handling the consequences, let alone replacing them in the box (zero count for all nations).
In fact your solution would hasten the inevitable rather than retard it. Other nations (Iran, N. Korea, China, India, Turkey?, Egypt?, Syria? - on and on) would accelerate their programs if we took over Pak's nukes. Our arrogance is already sticking in a lot of craws. That kind of action would coalesce their actions.
Nuclear immolation is cast in stone. Merely a Q of Sooner? or Later?
NeilMacCallister 07/29/2010 05:09 PM Report
Rob, ..if this multi-national firefight really is over the possession of 200 active nuclear warheads, ..is that a battle to which you are advocating we just "walk away from", ..and let those 200 warheads become the spoils which will go to whomever is able to snatch them up first?
It seems to me that we are better to stay there long enough to minimize the future (and present) death tolls suffered in the Middle East and elsewhere around the world, by doing whatever we can to safeguard the lock-down, or encourage the dismantling, of those weapons.
If we allow those weapons to be disseminated and used, and we are provoked to respond in kind, ..well, we all know that would be much worse for everyone.
Let's hope we find a reason to chose better before too many more precious lives are sacrificed for want of vision.

So Argen--- Why don't we get the hell out?

U.S.A sent troops to South Korea and South Vietnam at least 60 years ago. South Korea, by the United States’ aid has been improved and now it is a strong economy and democracy country across the world, but South Vietnam dominated according to the USSR and China’s conspiracy plan, which helped South Vietnam’s militant named “Vitkanges”.
That time the U.S soldiers were killed by Vitkanges, and the U.S couldn’t attack to their stronghold in China, because of the risk of nuclear war. So for, I have been in Afghanistan, and I noticed that more then 95% of Taliban insurgents originally are not afghan. The international Islamic fundamentalists from different parts of world are gathering inside Pakistan by the help of Pakistan’s spy agency. They are fighting against Afghan government and International peace keepers by the name of “Taliban”, and it is hundred percent clear and confirm, that Taliban militants are being supplied by Pakistan’s spy agency. NATO’s troops are being killed by Taliban militants every day, who are receiving weapons, money, training, strongholds, shelters and more from Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI). Pakistan is ostensibly an ally of the United States against terrorism, but Pakistan is not an honest ally of the U.S.A, and it has frauded the U.S.A.
The U.S.A, Mr. Obama and NATO’s reputation and dignity is close to their success in Afghanistan.
So, if Ronald Regan could beat the USSR in the 1980’s .
Obama can not stop ISI activity against NATO’s troop in Afghanistan and save the U.S and NATO’s reputation and dignity across the world?

HUSAIN HAQQANI: Afghanistan and Pakistan need assistance from the United States in building a future for our countries.
We have a public that does not have a very high opinion of the United States. So, we’re trying to give the impression to the people of Pakistan that Americans really care about Pakistan.
We are grateful for the Kerry-Lugar-Berman bill, which promises $1.5 billion in unconditional economic assistance to Pakistan. That will help Pakistanis start getting a level of comfort with the United States.
Pakistani people are sitting in their homes in the heat of 100, 105, 110 degrees with no electric fans, let alone air conditioning.
By the way, let me add, despite the similarity of my name, the Haqqani Network has nothing to do with me or my family.
CHARLIE ROSE: I clearly understand that.

Dear Mr. Ambassador,
I'll bet the United States of America would double or triple that $1.5 trillion dollars, if Pakistan would just destroy the 200 or so nuclear warheads it maintains, and let all the battling factions return home to peaceful pursuits.
Thank you very much.

Playing us like a banjo.

The allegations against Gul and the ISI are certainly nothing new. We are unquestionably the main support for the current govt, as much as for the previous one, so of course they are worried about us leaving. They have been walking a tight rope for many years. The youth of the population is a clear indication of increasing poverty, and is a trend that has to be reversed if anyone has any hope of a brighter future for the country.
