      Yet another well thought-out execution of the cops-n-robbers running our clandestine services - a la the Russian lopsided swap. Sure they've overlooked some high-school chemistry teachers as well.

      Did the Saudis' compromise a pilgrimage - the haj? If so that could have some unintended consequences I would think. Even its suspicion.

      I'd guess he probably reneged on his defection, possibly because of pressure on his relatives at home, and/or possibly the US found him of no use. However, this episode reminds me that the Wash Post reported the other day the FBI had failed in an attempt to entrap two of the Russians eventually exchanged, tipping them off and forcing their arrest. There may be more to this story as well.
