"Amabi Amarra ship" in transcript s/be "Mavi Marmara" per NYTimes; found on p. 5 James Traub article on Turkish Foreign Minister Davutoglu http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/23/magazine/23davutoglu-t.html. Article is good update on the PM Erdogan interviews CRose has done.

Re: the tensions with Israel in this most recent PM Erdogan interview: JTraub writes "After the Mavi Marmara incident, Thomas L. Friedman asserted in The Times, perhaps hyperbolically, that Turkey had joined 'the Hamas-Hezbollah-Iran resistance front against Israel'" and "Tempers have cooled in recent months," tracing some of the details of recent exchanges. Friedman was cited by CRose in the intro, though not that exact quote.

      Also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_Mavi_Marmara, re: ship name.

I know that Mr. Rose wants to be invited back; however, how such a prominent western journalist spends 1 hour with the leader of Turkey without asking him about the recognition of the Armenian Genocide or - at the very least - the Armenia blockade is mind blowing especially when Mr. Erdogan claims that "We are engaged in cooperation with these countries (including Armenia)." It's sad and pathetic.

      @ ShalomFreedman:

It is quite interesting how you try to vilify Prime Minister Erdogan.

I have read many of your comments on Charlie Rose forums and your stand is always towards Israel (should I say blind support?). Please let us know where did PM Erdogan lied in his comments on Israel would that be on UN resolutions against Israel, The so called Operation Cast lead, the blockade in Gaza, the attack on the flotilla?

You should take off the word Shalom in your nickname It is an insult to the true meaning and value of this word!

My dear friend, in answer to your comment, when it comes to Israel "they" do not want you to have either insight or a clear understanding. They do not want you to know the truth about the racist nature of the state of Israel, its daily violations of human rights and international law, or its illegitimate origins. They would spin the world upside down and lump Erdogan with Hitler and argue the sun rises in the west and sets in the east all to obscure the truth about Israel.

A reality check puts the Pals. at the mercy of Israel. They are pillaged, blockaded, stormed, invaded, murdered, dehumanized, living in their own excrement with the Pal.:Israel kill ratio over 100:1.

Charlie had the chutzpah to ask (somewhat plaintively) Erdogan (in affect), how can the security of Israel be assured?

Holy feces! For all that is holy why wasn't the query the other way round? Other than cya-type considerations and bigotry. Professional journalism (and facts-on-the-ground) be damned apparently.

I applaud the Charlie Rose show for interviewing leaders like Ahmadinejad, Assad and Erdogan but it would be even more informative to have their questions and objections regarding Israel and U.S. policy answered. These individuals articulated very important and thought provoking points of view that are in stark contrast to what the mainstream media tells us on a daily basis. To just leave them hanging out there without an intellectually honest discussion of their merits does little to advance our understanding and insight.

It's fortunate that some comments below suggest ond-sided views and attempts to discourage an open intellectual balanced dialog. Open respectful dialog is beneficial to us Americans (especially our interests), Europeans, Asians, and in the Middle East including Israel... in the longrun towards a lasting peace for all.

    8. changeforpeace  06/29/2010 10:36 PM Report

Respectful discussions and sincere attempts to listen to other viewpoints helps bring understanding, maybe more peace - even if you don't agree one can learn. I'm sure everyone who watched or wrote here would want that for themself. Thanks to people like Charlie Rose, who actually practices this kind of principle.

    9. robdverity  06/29/2010 05:23 PM Report

Charlie shat himself on this one. His fawning Zionist advocacy came off nearly as a whining pleading. Erdogan nearly scolded him for his lop-sided, biased queries. He would be well served to reject any future invitations. The great interviewer seemed to be playing to Bloomberg News than to insightful journalism. Granted he has to be mindful of where his bread is buttered, but mindfulness also should have some play professionally. More than in this obsequious display.

    10. ShalomFreedman  06/29/2010 02:48 PM Report

Ahmadinejad, Assad and now Erdogan. Charlie Rose seems to be acting more and more as a public relations man for the world's worst leaders.

Erdogan in 2003 refused to allow U.S. forces entry into Iraq from his territory. This was the first sign of his shift away from the West.

He has recently turned radically against Turkey's long- time ally Israel. There is strong evidence that the terrorists on the flotilla boat had links with the Turkish government. And that he was behind this provocation.

No one in the West mentions the shameful repression of the Kurds in Turkey. This is a long - term problem. The Kurds are by far the largest minority denied any political voice or say in the Middle East.

Erdogan 's embrace of Ahmadinejad is another sign of how President Obama's policy of engaging the radical Islamic world in dialogue has failed.

Erdogan is moving within Turkey itself to suppress sources of opposition.

Large amounts of Saudi money are involved in the Islamization of Turkey.

Erdogan is moving Turkey away from Westernization and democratization.

Charlie Rose does not by coddling this kind of character do his audience a favor.

Erdogan is by the way an experienced and practiced liar. Every hint at moderation in his words is belied by his actions.

Turkey in order to go forward as a country will need a different leadership.
