I suppose the weather as well as the noise has taken the Europeans some getting used to...or maybe the ball spins backwards down there. But I'd think being held in Africa has motivated the 3d world countries' players in particular. People talk about strategy in this game, but you can't prove it by me, and I'd extend that to what seems an obvious lack of discipline, poor coaching and refereeing. That may be why it appears to remain popular only with kids in this country. If TV ratings are up I'd suggest it is because immigration is also up.
