      I think he has all this about right. It was tho discussed rather well by Remarque in All Quiet on the Western Front. It may be quite impossible for "men of commerce" to be soldiers, because it is an entirely different culture, one based on the idea of territory, and the family, community or nation based on it, and yet prior to them, wars were largely confined to defense. Churchill or his father remarked about the wars of democracy being far more terrible.
