Cabaret types (cigarettes and all) are a nostalgia for a seemingly more sentimental era. The unrequited love syndrome: "Set-em-up-Joe" etc. A life-long diet of torches leaves little room for the primal-screams that pass for today's (so-called) music. I've converted to classical as a refuge; with no regrets.

I was going to say yesterday that country singers are not just about the only writers of popular songs these days, but the only performers of them, but, of course, there are still a few cabaret singers like Ms Freelon, which it's a shame not many ppl know about. We used to see them occasionally on The Tonight Show, but I suspect that era is long over. It was a pleasant surprise to see this segment and it's something that might be built on.
