Charley Rose and Garry Wills are two of my favorite public figures and social observers. Wills' books especially on the founding and federalism are very interesting and worthwhile. But I will never understand why people, especially intelligent ones, can give an ounce of credence and credibility to religion of any kind, particulary as it is extolled and practiced in the United States. Faiths of all kinds give me chills. Religious thought has no influence or justification on moral matters. How we can let such hocus-pocus enter and occupy our minds as it does is baffling to me beyond words. Just look at any TV evangelist - they are all insane and/or blatantly grasping for power over the simpleminded. People ruin their lives believing in such nonsense.

a Great insightfull interview. Gary is as qualified a speaker on the subject than most. If you don't agree with his thoughts, and they offend you, well...forgive him

TS your very insightful.Its funny how these intellectuals set themselves up as experts then turn around and defy their own reason. Wills has some very very good insights about the early churchs spiritual simplicity and the lack of modern organized dogmatic legalism and hierarchy of today supported by scripture in his book "What Jesus Meant".But then he turns arounds and tells us that the most corrupt unscripturally spiritually bankrupt dogmatic religious institution the world has ever seen the Vatican has relevancy.Even though it constantly goes against alot of what scripture teaches. Then when he said he believes in evolution, follows the cult of the blessed mother and prays the rosary I about fell off my chair.Nothing but an inconsistant grab bag of theology.1ST John 2:27 "But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, AND YE NEED NOT THAT ANY MAN TEACH YOU but as that same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in Him."

I marvel at the mental gymnastics of Mr. Wills, who can articulate and simultaneously apprehend the following assertions: 1) not all of the Bible can be taken at face value; some of it is eternally true & some of it was never true (he must have the decoder ring), 2) we have to filter our acceptance of religious teachings through our sense of what is reasonable, yet later he asserts that the essence of religion is mystery, that it is beyond our comprehension (of course, the primacy of reason enervates all force of gospel), 3) the longing for what religion often provides is the longing for religion, and on and on. Like many others, he has created in his mind a religious justification for his own sense of morality, which he then refers to as authoritative. That he articulately touts reason while defying it deserves much applause.

Your very right Gary Jesus was most merciful and would embrace tax collectors,prostitutes and homosexuals.But He died on a cross to "FORGIVE" sin because it was sin and its completely theologicaly absurd of you to imply that HE would embrace their sin,yours,mine or anyone elses.

"Go and sin no more" "If you love me you will keep my comandments" I think you are a bit lost in your intellectual mumbo jumbo!!!!

Did you go to cemetary,I mean seminary???
