A window for what? It appears what they have in mind is to just remove them from the religious right and give them the means and motive to keep the associated banditry at bay. But as long as this region is one of the world's foremost sources of opium, the latter seems a insuperable task and I am not so sure anyone cares about the former. And what prospect is there to bring these disparate clans together in some sort of peace without the central government, which will involve forgiving some bitter hatreds, if a not a complete change of character? I don't know how even a little bit of this can be achieved without long-term occupation and a lot of money, and I think it might just as well have been accomplished as readily without our intervention, if it can be at all. The same can be said about the US-Pakistan collaboration, which is undoubtedly a requirement for military success, but which to be effective in the long run will require a considerable commitment.
