Independents are undoubtedly the key factor and have been taken for granted, but I blame the Congressional Democrats more than anyone else. I think Obama has allowed himself to be led by big government and big business (or actually big banks), but probably because he felt he had no choice. As Klein said, Congress turned to feuding for another year. He didn't, as Scarborough said, stake out his position, nor it seems any strategy for these things, rather like Lincoln and the ground war. But the budget has to be brought under control and there are things that can be done nevertheless. There are ways to pass some useful health care, for instance, a program limited to catastrophic coverage, with greater coverage to be added when economic conditions improve. There are things that can attract Republicans, which might be traded for support for responsible liberal programs. Many Republicans, and probably a lot more independents, are in favor of some sort of health insurance, and financial reform. Many, if not all of them, are in favor of reforming the tax code, and doing something about energy dependence and climate change and education. And I presume the White House knows this. But it may not realize that it can much more safely adopt free market measures with the Volcker plan in place. For myself, I was floored to get three winners and see the stock mkt fall all in the same week. I usually hate January. If Obama goes back to the basics he ran on I think everyone will be happier. If Bernanke is reappointed with total Republican support, tho, I think it may an harbinger of more turmoil.
