REMant 01/22/2010 02:22 PM Report
I hope that when she reaches 52 or 62, she will realize there's no reason for worrying about careers and success in the first place. However, I do think it is more characteristic of women than men to worry about status. That's what made for so many 19th c hysterics. It shouldn't matter what other ppl "think," and if someone acts as if it should, you should tell him (or her) to get lost. The fundamental rule in relationships has to be if the other person doesn't like you, it's his (or her) problem, not yours. Thst doesn't mean he (or she) might not have a good reason for the feeling, but it needn't be "judgmental," and shouldn't be taken that way. If it is, then you both have a problem. I am not arguing therefore that everyone deserves a prize for participation, but rather that life isn't a race to begin with. There is nothing at all wrong with being a team player as long as that doesn't mean always going along to get along. One of the nice things about the Internet is that it has been a great leveler with respect to the media. I hsve the feeling BTW, that she'd probably have made a very good news anchor. And I suspect ppl may object to her even-handedness, which seems to be very much in the mold of her father.
