    1. TS  05/23/2007 03:07 AM Report

Rev. Wallis begins with the axiom "Speak the language of the audience" and makes the astute observation that religious doctrines are disjointed alphabets in a language of adamance and righteousness that can be used to construct & foment a nearly endless array of passions (love, hate, aggression, acceptance, etc.) in service of the speaker's ends. Translation: Religions are political instruments; the poor man's reason. So long as we willfully supplant rational thought and skepticism with the authority of superstition, we will suffer the consequences of decisions based on religion rather than reason... unless rational people are willing to manipulate the faithful in their own terms. I hope the DNC takes Rev. Wallis's advice to heart. E.g., "We're increasing educational spending, because God (or Allah, Ganesh, the magical unicorn, etc.) said so."
