He is being pretty judicious and intelligent about it all, but I'll bet many more ppl will die of the seasonal flu than of the swine flu. Denial, I hope he sees is not just fear of man-made stuff, but also about denying that a lot of man-made ideas have not worked out so well - DDT, lobotomies, etc - no matter what you think about vitamin pills. And there are a lot of man-made things that are killing off species that might be surer means to the desired end. Enthusiasts seem to come in both manic and depressive types, and are just as fatalistic no matter which mood they are in. I never took vitamins until a few years ago, but take a basic pill now just to make sure I get at least of some everything and because I am getting older, get outside less, and needs change, as for instance for Vitamin D. I often wonder whether the stuff is adulterated or made so that it is actually absorbed, etc, especially since a lot of them are made in China. However just today a negative report was on the news again about herbal supplements. There's no doubt a lot of bunk about "organic" shampoos, toothpastes, soaps and the like as well, which environmentally might make some sense, altho for the most part just using Ivory soap and baking soda will do just as well. I would extend his thought to include all areas in which ppl draw premature conclusions, for instance, the idea that ingestion of fat is always bad. Half a million South Africans dying is not, in itself, necessarily a bad thing, if you consider that the behavioral component is significant. We cannot prevent everything or insure everyone. And you also have to realize that they are genetically more at risk from HIV.
