They might find out about Charlie Rose from a social network, but whether they would watch it for more than 10 secs is another matter. There's a great deal many more networks on the net than most ppl are aware of, thankfully. YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc may even be a minor part of it. "Gifting" seems to be merely the Kwakiutl in us coming out, no seriously, it is part of a personality type of which there seem to be too many these days whose object is to patronize others, and it forms a part of their child-rearing. He seems to be typical of this type, to be found in abundance in Silicon Valley and the West coast generally, which I've already noticed has much more to do with making money and social status than it does with engineering. There is more than a hint of enthusiasm and "other-direction" in it. But new ideas in the past have spread from the East to the West coast and taken about a generation to make the journey.
