screw loose? After hearing Mr. Goodwin eloquently articulate his perspective on the ground conditions in Iraq and Afghanistan, i am proud that men like him -- educated, thoughtful and articulate, are deciding to serve in the military. It was a pleasure to listen to him.

I think Doris's son learned something valuable, as he says, but I also think he has a screw loose somewhere for going in the first place, and is not entirely forthcoming. LBJ was persuaded, I think, that he could extend the Great Society to the Far East and the like. As time went on he clung more and more to the domino argument. He should have listened to Russell, and ignored the hawks, but, I'm afraid, like Obama, he may have felt he had to show his metal. If he was afraid of Goldwater, it certainly showed lack of political savvy. Moyers played an hour's worth of these tapes and it made me wonder about the context, because LBJ called ppl like this all the time, and I think it may have been part of feeling his way to a consensus that everyone would support, while letting ppl know how he, himself, felt. I have seen small town ppl do this quite a lot and I wonder if he was not actually engaged in a little of the backhanded persuasion he is noted for.
