REMant 01/13/2010 02:14 AM Report
Liberal in the classic British, Smith-type sense, Charlie, not in ours. I think he is deceived about globalization, rather what I think has happened post-war is that while some people have moved into higher classes, not only there, but in the 1st world, the vast majority have been impoverished by it. Before the Depression, I think, the 2nd and 3d worlds were not only relatively richer, but, for the most part, the classes were not nearly as far apart, though clearly the living standard as a whole was not as high. It is a big mistake, I think, to confuse the improvement in the latter, which must be due to science and technology, with the spread of mkts, which appear to me to be moving in the opposite direction. And this will undoubtedly have a great impact on global politics.
