When asked about the common qualities of scientists engaged in discovery Shinya Yamanaka said “…they do not believe in textbooks.” This is brilliant! To capture the essence of a complex process in so few words is enspiring.

Textbooks only tell us what we think we already know. To go beyond that you have to stop believing in them and the people who write them and use them. You have to get off the old trail if you want to blaze a new one.

Charlie is talking to two scientists who have been recognized for pushing into new territory. If you want to read about the new territory of the science of cultural evolution (which has not been recognized yet) go to Digdug’s blog (http://culturalevolutionscience.blogspot.com).

The Complex-Systems Theory of Culture can explain many aspects of cultural evolution. It can explain why Shinya Yamanaka’s opinion is valid, and it is currently being used to explain how the American economy is sliding toward another Great Depression.
