In Florida we had chads of all stripes. What exactly were the irregularities in this election. Protests are only the greasier wheels taking to the streets that the CIA probably ginned up. Its not as if protests alone are proof of an election rigging but 99% of the coverage we get seems to push that notion. There was plenty of baton swinging going on right here during the conventions and even the press were subject to our brand of authoritarianism. And I'll never forget those robin egg blue helmets in Chicago convention newsreels. Did we learn from that?

It seemed a farced production, a disgrace to rational thought and broadcasting in general.

They didn't mention a simple fact that last time that there was big turnout in the election it was only to elect reformist khatami and in 2005 ahmadinejad won the election because people didn't vote. Ahmadinejad had 60% of small vote turnout and this time around the 85% turnout of votes was only because of people supporting mousavi who was endoresed by khatami.

Abbas Milani devastated Flynt Leverett's claim that Ahmadinejad clearly won the election. He interpreted polls results which show that the Iranian people have a number of opinions which put them in direct opposition to Ahmadinejad. No one would go out on a limb and say what they expect to see happen. The demonstrations are very large and as Milani points out there are major players in Iran behind them. Burns rightly points out the wisdom of the U.S. playing it low- key now, and allowing the Iranians to resolve this.

It seemed to me, too, that the govt simply panicked, and were probably afraid to count the votes, or even wait that long. It was chilling during the campaign there to see women offering up their babies for Ahmadinejad's blessing as if he were God's representative on earth - something straight out of the middle ages - but it happened with Arafat, too, and it is something we just have accept and try to deal with.
