Syracuse University, fall of 1985. Bob Costas comes back to his campus to pick an assistant. Two-year gig. Get to make lots of connections. Talent around WAER, WJPZ, The Daily Orange, and the television studio includes: Mike "90-Day Suspension" Tirico, Bill "Mr. Virginia and West Virginia Sports" Roth, Charlie (Houston Talk Radio) Pallilo, and Doug (WRGB) Sherman. Costas picks none of 'em.

His choice: Some frat drunk who's daddy was among the top five power bosses at the New York Times.

That's Bob Costas. Always playing the angles. Always looking out for No. 1.

I had already tapped out the reflection that it would be interesting to see if baseball considers the indiscretions of Clemens and Rodriquez et al worse than Rose's or not, before Charlie asked the question, and my feeling that Pete had not done any real harm WRT any games or the sport itself before Costa echoed my sentiments. However, AKAIK steroid use was widespread by the late 70's, and it would not surprise me to find out that Rose used them as well, maybe even ppl like Mark Spitz. If so, you can throw the record books out the window. It's not just the press who have idolized these ppl, but all the fans. I doubt they would use them if it were not for that.
