Meacham's analysis of the President's transformation to 'Commander-in- Chief' makes a lot of sense. There is a nice touch in his telling us the President believes the American people want a 'complexity in explanation' i.e. Do not want to be treated as if they are simpletons. However the analysis Meacham makes of the economic situation, and of his own journal 'Newsweek's' situation do not create a great deal of confidence. There is a kind of hesitancy and uncertainty in Meacham which seem perfectly suitable to the kind of intellectual he is. But they give the feeling of us all being on very shaky ground.

Okay, okay, I'll go find a copy of the Pulitzer Prize-winning tome and check it out. He's a smart guy for his age, I'll agree, but I have to say Charles, when you put your mind to it and relax, you do pretty well, too. The reason that we can't simply restart the economy ala Keynes is that we must re-capitalize it first through savings, because we already have too much debt, or we wouldn't be in the fix we are in. I doubt it really would be possible to do it at any time, because there is no way to erase a debt without either savings or enhanced productivity, which, I believe debt actually deters the latter, and if the whole world is to do better it is not be possible to slough the debt off onto others as we have done in the past, either. The news today suggesting that Bernanke wants to buy up more savings and create even more debt, and that Geithner (and no doubt Summers) supports him, is simply nuts, and it is bound to destroy the Obama presidency, not to mention making them goats for future historians. Plus the Post reported today that Volcker's role appears to be only window dressing. I, of course, agree with Meacham's idea of the course journalism must take. Either you have the mkt, or you do not, and the mkt for "new" journalism and such, like the mkt for bikini babes, is already overcrowded. Part of the problem in recovering the mkt for magazines like Newsweek will, however, be in reaching the "intelligensia," these days, because they are so preoccupied with their careers and associated journals, and make so little attempt to apply their knowledge to anything in the "real" world. Some kind of partnership with a few selected academic journals might be a thought.
