In response to the previous blogger: when Americans criticize other countries for human-rights violations, it's like the big pot calling the kettle black.
The American populace is cut off from Cuba, of course, because our government wants to keep people ignorant of what is working well in a very proximate communist country. Then there are the Cubans exiled in Florida with whom politicians need to contend . . .

It is ironic that these African-American representatives did not try to meet with black dissidents in Havana, Cuban heroes like Oscar Elias Biscet, an African-American who is in jail with a sentenced of 25 years just because he pacifically has manifested his in inconformity with the current system, heroes like Antunes, an African-American in hunger strike since February 07, who previously was in jail for 15 years. But no, instead the Congress representatives spent a weekend in Varadero Beach and just care about the big $$$ American enterprenuers are loosing because of the embargo. They raised the argument that USA trade with other Communist regimes like China and Vietnam and exceptionally, not with Cuba. They raised the argument that more that 40 years of embargo hasn't changed the dictatorship. Which I would ask back: Is a Chinese or a Vietnamese freer after the US is trading with their governments? Is a Chinese or a Vietnamese freer than a Cuban? There is a statute of limitations for the fight of civil liberties and human rights?

Well, given our exploitive brand of commercialism and egregious greed and one-upmanship subsidized 'free-trade,' whose to say they're not better off. We'd doubtless turn it into a gambling mecca within a year and build bigger and better yacht basins for our lesser financial wise-guys. Tax-free of course.

Embargoes and boycotts have been a part of American policy since colonial times and I don't think it is an accident. It is built into liberal evangelical character, and has always been used as a means of breaking the will of their children. Those ppl who are for them are clearly one and the same, and constitute a distinct party. They have done this country a lot of harm and it is past time they were put in their place. Too, it will surely be better strategy, even for those who are against trade, to engage the Cubans, just as it was for China and Vietnam, and let them decide for themselves. I have the feeling tho that many in south Florida are holding out in the expectation of having their property handed back to them and all the rest is just a smokescreen. But, never fear, maybe the govt will bail them out.

Why was the interview with Rep Richardson & Rep Cleaver less than 10 minutes on such an important subject & their trip?

Some months ago I wrote my excellent US senator, Robert Menendez (D, NJ), he of Cuban extraction, urging him to work for the normalization of US/Cuban relations. The response I received from Senator Menendez, endorsing the status quo, was a great disappointment. Perhaps the African-American (sic) members of Congress who successfully visited Cuba can persuade Senator Menendez to rethink his position.
