To start any business you certainly need capital.

      Dear Ms. Stewart,

I appreciate your encouragement to put in our efforts to achieve our goals, and yet not put ourselves into burdensome debt in order to start our business.

But I argue with your statement that a preferred way to obtain business seed-money, rather than going to a bank, is to instead "borrow from friends and family".

      Is there any difference there?

Is a debt not a debt, if it is owed only to friends and family?

      ***

Perhaps a better way to state that advice is to suggest that the new business owner recruit money by offering shares of her or his new company to her or his friends and family.

The money-lender could then take repayment in the reasonable-length future, by either the continued ownership of the stock, ..or by expecting repayment of the initially loaned amount, at the choice of that lender/shareholder.

      ***

I just don't like borrowing from family.

Most people can't do that anyway!!

      Thank you.
