I was privileged to have spent my boyhood years as David's near neighbor and grade and high school classmate.I think we sensed in those early years that he had a gift, but we then thought it was as a painter more than an author. But he always has exuded that articulate clarity of thought and expression (written and oral), enthusiasm and curiosity which sets him apart and enables him to achieve the incredible heights. Charlie Rose' hour succeeds in extracting from David much of the inner drive which elevates him above the rest of us.
We DVR every broadcast, so it was a great pleasure seeing this re-broadcast, perfect for the 4th of July. Fantastic interview!
I loved the book and the mini series - one so beatifully and engagingly written and the other so well casted and acted. I was suprised that the credit for the theme music was not given to the selfsame authors of the theme from Michael Mann's "Last of the Mohicans" as it was remarkably similar. An homage perhaps?
What a great opportunity to hear from one of America's best authors as he was interviewed by one of America's best and most knowledgeable moderators. I too believe it important for us, the American public, to know our history and the men and women who helped shape it, and to consider the values they lived and the sacrifices they made that have made us the beneficiaries of a noble legacy. Thanks to people like David McCullough we are able to do just that. May we be wise in seeing that the legacy continue.
I happened upon this rebroadcast by accident and was so glad I did. I've read his biography of John Adams; it was the most absorbing and compelling book I've read in a long while. I've recommended it to many people. He truly brought the man to life for me as numerous history courses have not. Having seen this show explains just why Mr. McCullough writes as he does. I must read more of his books. Thank you for the rebroadcast!
