This was a wonderful interview---MORE MORE PLEASE. Even at 72, I could follow a lot of his technical conversation--probably because he spoke in real language, not computerese. I keep wondering, but not worrying, about a Pearl Harbor on the internet--we all depend on it so much. Thanks for having this fine guest. eo

Fantastic interview!
This conversation was in a way bit over my head. I am not a technology freak and did not understand some of the stuff Zittrain was describing. When he began to talk about a threat to the Internet as a whole I thought of something completely different from what he mentioned. A totalitarian state taking over the Internet, wiping out anything it did not like and controlling the world in a much tighter way than ever imagined before. In any case Zittrain does make us aware that there are 'ideal futures' we may not want to have.

Is it possible to continue this type of series into table discussions with David MacCay, Jimmy Carter, Paul Newman, Greg Mortenson, George Soros, Dr. Christiane Northrup, James Carrol, Zahad Hadid, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Mitch Albom, Khaled Hosseini, Paulo Coelho, and a Joseph Campbell if there is one? It appears to me this is a vital time and that there are many individuals who want to expand their consciousness to explore further into what is truly is occuring on this planet both as one and as a whole. To Charlie Rose, I believe you should be using the name APPLE before the word Iphone! You are a technology buff and you know there is an Iphone made by Cisco systems, which was on the market a long time ago and probably updated versions are still on the market. I have 2 Iphones made by Cisco Systems and they are 8 years old. Please correct yourself and your guests and no I did not work for Cisco Systems.
A very good time for this book to come along. The Internet is at a crossroads, with regard to purpose, policy, and legislation. Blogging is the new form of media. Rather than being channelled to the masses, with the use of the Web, society is becoming the propagator. Automated control of trolls and/or unwanted broadcasts could be useful to the way information is shared. One good example of this is Wikipedia. This may have been mentioned in this interview, but Zittrain brings it up in other conversations. I think that Zittrain comes along at an auspicious time. It would be great to watch the interview once more. Will the Charlie Rose show be putting it up on this web site for viewing? In this brilliant persons' defense of the word "verisimilitude"; it's a word, and I believe he used it in the correct context. Perhaps it is this unwarranted comment that is echoing about within this Blog. To the Charlie Rose show, please post the interview movie so that it can be seen again.

I try not to miss many of your programs and was fortunate to catch the last 5 minutes of your talk with Jonathon Zittrain. The subject matter particularily interested me as my son David who lives in England is writing his Phd. thesis on the the socialogical effects of the computer and its associated applications. Other media also play a part in the study. Thanks for a facinating few minutes and we will both keep our eyes open for the full interview when it appears on your web page Kindest regards, Russell

Mr Zittrain seems like a literate thinker in the language of technology. However his use of one word betrayed him as someone out to impress the audience with his intelligence. That word was "verisimilitude," it was dropped into the conversation like a rock and that rang hollow. One might conclude that such a conscience effort to impress is that of a poser?
I am much more worried that regardless of security or political issues, the constant pressure to privatize everything, make it "rivalrous" and a service - the equivalent of field enclosure or the trusts - will win out over an open net supported by subscription, individual machines and programmers. As for technical ability in this field, I think the Europeans have person-for-person already far surpassed us, just as they had in television and phones. The only area in which we seem to be ahead of them is in producing sporge, spam, advertising, and the like.
Dhananjay, Thanks for your reference to David MacKay. I looked him up and reviewed his presentation slides. Very interesting. Do you know if he has any mp3 or video clips of this presentation online? Regarding his thesis, it is true that we do not currently get a lot of energy from renewables. However, Scientific American, which is a very mainstream respectable source of information has an article on a Grand Solar Plan which envisions 35% of US electricity needs from solar by 2050. See link below. http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=a-solar-grand-plan Many states including California already have a 20% renewables by 2010 mandate. California is considering increasing the mandate to 33% under their AB32 Climate Change regulation. I think David MacKay's point that we cannot have the population density in energy poor regions (like the UK) relying on renewables is valid. Our societies have developed in areas which depend on a tremendous amount of energy import. There will have to be readjustments of our lifestyle to consider energy. We live in interesting times...
Hi Charlie, Any discussion about energy, global warming etc. is incomplete without including professor David MacCay from the cambridge university (physics dept.) in UK. He has done a thorough, exhaustive and deliberative study of sustainable/renewable energy, global warming etc. in terms that all people can understand. Pleas look at the set of slides from his talk titled "sustainable energy without the hot air". He has been methodically and painstakingly gathering evidence to debunk myths such as "we get a lot more energy from the sun than we need right now". In fact he presents compelling evidence that out current lifestyles are already beyond what we can harness out of what we get from the sun. let alone what will happen if all people in india and china start driving and consuming energy at the same rates as USA and/or UK. he is my role model for what i consider to be a very productive and worthwhile use of academic freedom. After doing some hard physics and inventing the MacCay Glass equations he has now dedicated himself to the cause of getting to the bottom of issues related to sustainability. If he can raise public awareness, and better still can change behavior, then he has paid his worth (as measured by his possibly meagre salary) multiple thousands/millions of times over..... I urge you to invite him on your program for a full hour. Satisfaction guaranteed or your money back. btw i have never met MacCay or not even communicated with him. A year or so ago i had emailed him something but never got a response back. i guess david is too busy doing the good work, his web site and the compendium of his viewgraphs speaks for itself. thanks and regards,
