Reply to John Coleman as to why we (the science minded) are so fearful. The quackery that is being infiltrated into scientific medicine and medical schools should be obvious to an intelligent person when one sees the words that the Integrative Medicine quacks are asking medicine to accept as medical terms: --- Higher Power --- life force energy --- spiritually guided life force energy --- natural healing --- spiritual diseases -- negative energies --- distant healing â?? ETC. <Coleman Wrote> It is so sad to see comments like those from Godfrey on Wednesday, Apr 2 at 03:16 PM and Ben on Wednesday, Apr 2 at 03:38 PM. What could possibly be wrong with each of us as individuals reclaiming power and control over our own lives in the health area? Why are they (the they Coleman is speaking about is the majority of the medical community) so fearful ----- ? John Coleman President Australian Reiki Connection Inc. <End of Coleman comments> John, The following statements have been copied from various Web Sites. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy. Dr. Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki system of natural healing, recommended that one practice certain simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony, which are nearly universal across all cultures. Reiki is a form of spiritual practice proposed for the treatment of physical, emotional, mental and spiritual diseases. Reiki was developed in early 20th century Japan to receive the ability of 'healing without energy depletion'. The name Reiki derives from the Japanese pronunciation of two Chinese characters that are said to describe the energy itself: 'rei' (meaning 'soul', 'spirit' or 'ghost') and ki (Chinese qi, meaning breath or 'life force energy' in this context). Reiki is a therapy that the practitioner delivers through the hands, with intent to raise the amount of ki in and around the client, heal pathways for ki, and reduce negative energies. Reiki can be practiced in several ways: on its own, along with other CAM therapies, and along with conventional medical treatments. In the latter case, Reiki is a type of "distant healing." It is so sad to see comments like those from Godfrey on Wednesday, Apr 2 at 03:16 PM and Ben on Wednesday, Apr 2 at 03:38 PM. What could possibly be wrong with each of us as individuals reclaiming power and control over our own lives in the healthcare area. Why are they so fearful and negative about Integrative medicine or even Complementary therapies. These therapies by their very name shows that they are not alternatives. I am not saying that Alternative medicines do not have a place. If orhtodox medicine is so good they why are over 70% of patients using CAM. The only losers in that are perhaps the Pharmeceutical companies, who as it happens are the largest voice/support against CAM. By the way Godfrey I would like to point out an innacuracy in part of your back up. Reiki is most definately NOT an ancient Eastern massage technique,it has nothing whatsoever to do with massage. Reiki is a non invasive, non manipulative and totally safe complementary therapy that works alongside ALL other therapies. Congratulations to Charlie Rose for presenting this timely and welcome topic. John Coleman
Charlie you have been a victim of the modern scams of name changes to recover discredited fads â?? Conservative changed to Compassionate Conservative, Creations Science changed to Intelligent Designer, and the latest Quackery changed to Complimentary Medicine changed to Integrative Medicine. What are sprit and mind treatments in a medical setting? When will we leave Witchcraft, Voodoo, Shamans, and Magical Potions to rot on the trash heat of old superstitions?
To: Charlie Rose, MAN-OOOh-MAN - You have been taken-in big-time by your integrative medicine guests and ex sister-in-law. You fell for the same switch that the ID/ Creationist have made (integrative medicine/complimentary and alternative medicine). Here is the proof that you and your producers have been hoodwinked by the CAM (Complimentary and Alternative Medicine) people. Christy Mackâ??s statement that integrative medicine is not CAM can easily be falsified by a Google search of your guests, weird far-out accomplishes (Weil, and others, etc.) and their organizations. Charlie the following is found on Google (Bravewell.org, guests name search, etc.): The idea for the Duke Center was the result of a collaboration between Dr. Ralph Synderman, former head of the Duke Medical Center, Dr. Tracey Gaudet, a Duke physician, and Christy Mack, who prefers the term "integrative medicine" over alternative medicine. The daughter of a Greensboro, N.C., doctor, she is heavily involved in the movement to blend treatments aimed at helping the mind and spirit with the use of conventional medicine like drugs and surgery. Mack, who herself is a trained practitioner of Reiki, an ancient Eastern massage technique that she claims transmits energy to the patient. Bravewell is aiming its proselytizing guns at university medical centers, attempting to promote the construction of integrative health facilities. It funded the development of the curricula on the topic for medical schools and trains 30 doctors a year in integrative medicine at a cost of $30,000 per doctor, using the works of Andrew Weil, a best-selling author and guru in the wellness field. And it gives a biannual $100,000 prize to recipients of its Bravewell Leadership Award, given to doctor who have made a big impact within the field. NCCAM claims mind-body intervention can be effective in the treatment of illnesses like coronary artery disease. Its Web site offers information on herbs like ginkgo and ginseng as well as topics like homeopathy. The evening awards ceremony, hosted by John and Christy Mack, featured a videotaped warm welcome from Prince Charles, first in line to the British Throne, who said he was looking forward to working across the Atlantic between his Princeâ??s Foundation for Integrated Health and Bravewell in the U.S. (Charlie Note: a presumed intelligent first in line to the British Throne believe in the rubbish of homeopathy and has a Royal Homeopath physician on the payroll of the Crown. This is the Newton mentally, smart but believing in the occult?) Andrew Weil, MD needs little introduction to observers who have watched the exponential growth of popularity of integrative medicine. In fact, Dr. Weil is widely credited with introduction of the term â??integrative medicineâ?? AS A WELCOMED REPLACEMENT TO â??ALTERNATIVEâ?? OR â??COMPLEMENTARY.â?? The following was found (offerings at the center) under a Google Search: Bravewell.org - then Click on: The Continuum Center for Health and Healing - www.bravewell.org/patient_empowerment/bravewell_clinical_network/continuum_center_for_health_and_healing/ - Complementary and Alternative Therapies Complementary therapeutic modalities are integrated into the healthcare services at the Center. The following modalities are currently offered at the Center. â?¢ Acupuncture â?¢ Acupressure/Shiatsu â?¢ Alexander Technique â?¢ Aromatherapy â?¢ Art Therapy â?¢ Biofeedback â?¢ Chiropractic â?¢ Cognitive Behavioral Therapy â?¢ Cranial Therapy â?¢ Dance Therapy â?¢ Exercise â?¢ Feldenkrais Method â?¢ Herbal Medicine â?¢ Homeopathy â?¢ Hypnosis â?¢ Imagery â?¢ Massage Therapy â?¢ Meditation/Relaxation â?¢ Music Therapy â?¢ Nutrition/Supplementation â?¢ Osteopathy â?¢ Prayer â?¢ Qigong â?¢ Reiki â?¢ Rolfing â?¢ Tai Chi â?¢ TENS â?¢ Therapeutic Touch â?¢ Trager Approach â?¢ Yoga Traditional and Indigenous Healing Systems The following traditional and indigenous healing systems are currently offered at the Center. â?¢ Ayurveda â?¢ East Asian Medicine â?¢ Kampo â?¢ Native American Medicine â?¢ Tibetan Medicine Sorry this is so long, but the medical intuitions are being infiltrated by the pseudoscience doctors. This is intolerable! This Integrative Medicine/CAM effort is taking money for research that advances the medical procedures that save you life and the lives of many other â?? Cam is totally against the ethical doctors â??do no harmâ?? pledge and you should be exposing it instead of promoted it. Articles have been written by Dr. Wallace Sampson and Dr. Harriet Hall expose the pseudoscience and harm that CAM is doing. I have read their articles and they would be excellent guests to give you the other side. Please consider having them on your program. Google them for more information! Godfrey Retired Engineer
While watching this episode on Integrative Medicine I was struck by the familiarity of the ideas discussed on this panel and for good reason. The profession of Nursing has long believed and promoted these same concepts. One only has to look to our major Nursing theorists from the past- Orem (Self-care to maintain life, health and wellbeing), Parse (Becoming, choice of personal meaning), Pender (Health promotion, disease prevention behaviors), Peplau (Interpersonal, nurse-client relationship, Roy (Adaptation, behavior adapting to forces), Rogers (Unitary Human Being, exchanging energy with the environment) and Watson (Caring as curative factors)to hear the echoes and importance of disease prevention and client involvement to facilitate health, healing and wellbeing through education, motivation and caring. I am glad to finally see Medicine and Nursing possessing common theoretical principles, all the better for the public that we care for.
That's great information, and it's information-with solid data-that groups like Pritikin, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), and Dean Ornish have been promoting for more than 30 years! They have thousands (probably hundreds of thousands) of clients who have improved their health and lives through a program of diet, exercise and stress management. It is possible to reverse heart disease, and, often, to eliminate daily medication. It would be most effective if these groups could get together, stop "reinventing the wheel,"-the data's there; we don't need more studies to show that diet and exercise are good-and use their resources to educate the public, including legislators who are heavily lobbied by the drug, insurance and health care industries, the meat, dairy, sugar and refined food companies, as well as the cigarette and alcohol companies. Thanks, Charlie!
I'm wondering too what the hold up is on the Friday broadcast. Was travelling and missed this important broadcast on Complementary Medicine. Is it available in some other form? Purchasable at another location?
Please offer video of Friday's segment on Integrative Medicine soon..Missed 3/28 and 3/31 segments...Most impatient to view this imp. subject ASAP!
Hi, to all who are working. Who is on vacation, the Website Staff?????????? We have a few more hours then it will be Tuesday. Did someone misaplace the video for Friday's program?
I was so glad to see the subject of integrative medicine receiving national air time. Our healthcare system concentrates on handling health problems once they reach a crisis state, but it should give equal attention to why people get sick in the first place. We can do so much to prevent illness, which would improve millions of lives and save millions of taxpayer dollars. And if people do become ill, in many instances integrative medicine can offer them better, safer, and more cost-effective medical interventions than the ones typically used. Kudos to Mr. Rose for bringing this to light.
Speaking as one who has had two near-death experiences, I am glad I have lived to see this day when esteemed representatives of the Western medical model are opening their hearts, minds and professional doors to advances in the knowledge of life. Speaking as one who is a health consultant specializing in a synthesis of the ancient teachings of Ayurveda, various modern approaches in bodymind psychology, and the progressive teachings of the Baha'i Faith, I am looking forward to the day when science will include investigation and practice of the effects of spirit on the mind, as well as the effects of the mind on the body. Its a subtle distinction but one that must be made: spirit, mind and body are part of the whole. When each is in balance, true health results.
News everyone could use. Wish the segment could have been extended. It is refreshing to hear such a empowering information in a national setting. As a citizenry we have spent so much time discussing health care (really illness care) and not near enough time spent on wellness care. Please bring on more. Tom Ohling, nutrition educator.
I wasn't able to watch the whole thing and hope it is posted here soon. Charlie, what happened to your eye??
I am excited to hear about the show on integrative health with Christy Mack. The next Charlie Rose Show scheduled in Atlanta is at 1:00 am on the 29th and is a different topic. Will we be able to find it at a later date?
What a timely discussion. Consumers have opened up complementary and alternative health care in a huge way and now one of the issues is sharing information with an open medical system through the most advanced health information technologies) and developing what patients want - a team approach to patient centered health care that includes chiropractic, acupuncture and other licensed health professionals in an integrated health care system. David O'Bryon, Executive Director, Association of Chiropractic Colleges
Kudos on the presentation of such an important and vital topic ! Eagerly look forward to hearing the discussion with these powerful voices.
Complementary medicine is spelled with an e not an i after the l. Please correct. This is a common mistake but means something entirely different. Thanks.

Integrative health -- as the advance of complimentary and alternative therapies, treatments and thinking into conventional health settings -- is the most underreported story in the national health dialogue. Glad to see that it has arrived at Charlie's table.
