yeah, the Obama speaking behind the scenes in San Fran and stereotyping half the country must be savvy - I am sure I will get it - right after a rather large looneytunes safe falls on my head.
To the response Carol J and to the response to Irish: This sounds like a lecture and either Charlie Rose or one of his staff wrote them. I am tired of hearing praise for Barack Obama and bad mouthing Hillary Clinton. We long time voters would rather they continue talking about the issues and not have the media constantly re-hashing what was said by their individual staff members or what their ministers have said. Bill Clinton can also shut his mouth.
Carol J: I disagree with having all the 50+ states primaries at the same day. We will not have clear winners that way, there will be diverse outcome. Meaning many of the runners are going to have closely similar outcomes, then what??? That is a bad idea, because democracy will not be served well. That way we may not end with the best-qualified candidate. The current system in place is excellent. It is better to filter those with leadership skills and those withwout leadership skills and those in between (pretend to have leadership skills but deep down they are followers). We have to be able to test our candidate on a stage where the pressure is immense and have them debate with each other on record, ideas as well as intentions. First and foremost the Democratic Party has to prove to all ctizens that it is a Party of the people by going to all minority communities and make them feel they too are just as important to make up our nation. The Democractic Party has done that well, unlike the Republican Party umbrella reserved to shelter the few; the Democratic Party has a bigger umbrella that shelter all.
Irish: You must have misunderstood the issue was about comfort. It is true elderly folks have lived longer, let's not forget it was only some 43 years earlier African-Americans were allowed to vote. Those elderly folks were in the middle of it all the partial democracy America was pushing for. America only became a full-fledged democracy in 1965, prior to that year America was not practicing democratic principles. Hence, that is the only logical explanation one can come to, with respect to majority of elderly folks not going to the best qualified presidential contender, Sen. Brack Obama! As you can see, many of the younger generation is going for Obama, they recognized his qualification and savvyness and embraced him fully. Regardless of his background, they only care how smart, capable and intelligent he is ad also saw the desecration of the oval-office by the current administration, and wanted to save America from utter failure by choosing the best hope for the country and the world. I am not saying it for the sake of writing something, it is happening before our eyes. If you have problem seeing that, I recommend you to speak to a neutral political pundit and confirm. You don't have to get mad, just be glad, we are about to go through leadership overhauling of the way America is governed. For the new century, new way of thinking coming to the White House!
To Shaft: First of all, I must correct my phrasing of my previous comments. I meant to say all 50 states should have their primaries on the same day. Then have the general where we all vote on the same day except for absentee ballots. Now Shaft you sound like a moron. Hillary does not need to stop her campaigning and she does not need to take an extended vacation to Guam. You should go someplace where it is 40 below zero and open the window and stick your head out of it and freeze off your snooty nose.
Shaft - on the thread for Axelrod's visit you said elderly people wont vote for your candidate because they are racist. This shows you to be a very limited person and not worth my time. Open a window and let some fresh air in - you stink of hate.
Answer to Carol J, Irish, and Frank BK: The issue here is time, and we do not have a lot of. The math clearly reveals that no matter how much Sen. Hillary Clinton wins by in the State of Pennsylvania; she cannot reach Sen. Barack Obama's numbers. He has almost 800,000 more voice capital, nearly twice as much States and over 130 more delegates over his competitor. If Sen. Clinton were to win all the coming States by 60:40 she would still be behind Sen. Barack Obama's numbers. What is the point of staying in? If the numbers are not there, then its better to prepare the path for concession speech: thank all those who volunteered their valuable time and invested their emotion, contributed with money and all sorts of supports, and most importantly she should tell all her support to rally behind our nominee. She should wish him an easy victory over Sen. McCain (who happens to be Pres. GWB's policy twin) and take a week or two rest from all this hectic period she has been thru for the past year and half, take an extended vacation to heal the concussions sustained over the last four months and move on. I heard the island of Guam is the best destination this time of the year. The longer she stays in the race will only make her appear to be vindictive and looking to draw more blood. We all know that Sen. Clinton is above that and more, she is one of thee most politically matured Senator of our times, her service in the Senate is highly valuable and appreciated. Next to Sen. Obama she has a far reaching understanding of which path our society should be heading. In short, she is needed more in the Senate than anywhere. It is about time for Sen. Barack Obama to re-arrange his angles and point his cannon vectors toward Sen. McCain where it hurts most, his Iraq policy and inability of understanding the inner workings of the economy. America is ill and needs a healer, and we've got the best political doctor. The doc is on his way,and that doc is Sen. Barack Obama! The faster we rally behind our candidate the faster hope will spread to those who need it, so the healing process begins. Let's not give Sen. McCain all the time to go around the country and make a mockery of America by flaunting GWB's failed policies, let's not allow him to take advantage of the infighting within the Democratic Party. All those States that went for Sen. Hillary Clinton will be talked into the program of change, so we can all stand together and bring about the desired effect to change America first and the world at large.
Voters should be aware that the Clintonâ??s are named defendants in a Civil Fraud Case connected to Campaign Finance irregularities and have not disclosed the appeal. There will be a trial date set at a hearing on April 25th, just 3 days after the key Pennsylvania Primary for the Fraud Case Paul v. Clinton in the Los Angeles Superior Court. Plaintiff says he will call Gov Rendell as witness in the case. From what I understand, this case began when prior to Sen. Clintonâ??s 2000 New York Senate campaign and also raised donations for Pres. Clintonâ??s Library. Plaintiff claims that the appeal was granted based on introduction of new videotaped evidence that contradicts Senator Clintonâ??s signed Declaration and previous testimony. The Department of Justice had been holding the tapes and they were just released them to him last year when the appeal was filed. Allegedly, there was some cat and mouse played with process service. This resulted in an admonition by Judge Aurelio Munzo stating that he didnâ??t care if the Clintonâ??s (Pres & Senator Clinton and Chelsea) were served on the campaign trail. I am not sure if one of the other main defendants, James Levin, has been served yet, he was former business partner to Pres Clinton and former Library Board Member (removed since his Federal conviction of defrauding the Chicago Public Schools of money). Mr. Levin is on Federal Parole and Plaintiff alleges that he is reporting as required, but no assistance from Parole office was being provided to serve him to appear in California courts. As I type this is seems just ridiculous that we as voters have not heard a news stories about it since the appeal was granted. Bloggers however are discussing and following the case. Someone said the trial date was going to be set in November. That is one problem that results from the information being shared on blogs instead of investigated by the professional media. THE GOP knows about it for sure. We donâ??t know the Clintonâ??s side of the story because they have not disclosed this. But Peter Paul tells his side of the story on Video. Clinton pardoning of 11 of 14 FALN Terrorist Members (responsible for bombing Frances Tavern in Manhattan in 1975 who had not even applied for pardons) prior to her Senate victory, and Sen. Hillary's fantasia 'hail-of-fire' in Bosnia was totally pathological bordering on Bush's WMD's, yellow-cake, Mission Accomplished ad nauseum. Bk...I simply do not understand the female anger at Barack Obama, who has said repeatedly in print and public, that he owes everything to his mother and grandparents. He has not called for Hillary to drop out; but honestly, I wouldn't mind if he called for Bill to drop out. Beats me how women forgive women who stick by cads in order to claim "experience" when THEY decide to run for public office, but don't look at the solid marriage Barack shares with his wife..who built a career before marrying Barack, WITHOUT HIS NAME OR HELP. Ladies, Michelle is the model, not Hillary. How can any woman forgive Hillary's vote on the invasion of Iraq, or McCain's for that matter? Why is the press ignorant of the Democratic Party rules? They buy Obama's spin every step of the way. He doesn't have over 2000 delegates, nor can he earn them, so he can't be the nominee! Like Kennedy, as you all say, he should negotiate with Senator Clinton to get her delegates, not tell her to drop out!!! What a low-life politician he is.
Why does the Press jump to adopt Obama's spin on a story? Why didn't anyone point out in their "analysis" that Bill Richardson is so OBVIOUSLY looking to be the Democrat vice-presidential nominee. He knows that Senator Clinton doesn't need him on the ticket because she already has the Hispanic community vote backing her. Obama needs that vote. Why doesn't anyone ask if he promised Richardson the veep slot on his ticket for his endorsement? (That would be an offer like Judas received.)
To Shaft and any others who may have forgotten not all states have had primaries etc. My state is one of them. Shaft you sound like the media. Senator Clinton should not quit and support Obama. My thoughts are: this campaign started to early and should not have. We should have had the chance to have more choices and I was disappointed when a couple bowed out so early on. There should be a time limit as to the length of campaign and how much money they can accumulate. Also maybe all 50 States should hold primaries and hold general election the same day. Then maybe get on with running the government instead of spending all their time politicking.

Governer Rendell is an outstanding governer who deserves all the recognition he deserves, its also a strong point for him to endorse Sen. Clinton for the presidency. Despite all Governer Rendell's desire and Sen. Hillary Clinton's wishs to be the Democratic nominee, but the American people have chosen Sen. Obama to be the best choice for the Democratic nomination and ultimately for the Presidency. Personally, I too thought Sen. Hillary Clinton would be the favorite, but the new young man has come to claim crown, and Sen. Hillary Clinton should not be angry at all, what stands between her and the presidency is not Sen. Obama, it is TIME. Sen. Obama was not easily convinced by GWB to authorize the Iraq war, he was able to see much clearly what would ensue after the war of easy victory over Iraqi military. Hence, he deserve to lead the nation and the free world. The war has claimed over 4000 Americans and $TRILLION$. The crown belongs to the one that stands above and beyond philosophy, and that candidate is none other than Sen. Barack Obama.

I just rewatched the 3/26/08 interview with Ed Rendell again online (thanks so much for providing these programs online),and it was even better the second time around. Hillary is so fortunate to have the support of such eloquent, knowledgable person as Governor Rendell. This was one of the best interviews I've seen on the program recently. I am one of the statistically-significant,incensed female demographic that Rendell referred to. I am astounded by the unfair, unbalanced, prejudicial media treatment of Hillary Clinton. It is unconscionable. I was especially interested in Rendell's reply to the inquiry about a specific example of this lopsided media coverage. As one who lives in between two disastrous nuclear power plants, I was stunned to learn that Obama had so flagrantly flip-flopped on the issue of nuclear plant safety which the NY Times, to its credit, covered and the rest of the media should have run with, but didn't touch. St. Barrack introduced an important nuclear reactor safety and community information bill in the Illinois Senate (Ill. has more reactors than any US state). However after accepting significant money from utilities and the nuclear industry, he watered down the bill, flip-flopped on the issue and became an advocate of nuclear power. You cannot call yourself a proponent of safe, clean, green energy and support nuclear power. It's an oxymoron. The media's reference to the so-called phenomenon of Obama "magic" should really be called Obama "sleight of hand."
I have always enjoyed your program and this is a good interview. I was suprised at your reaction that you did not realize that Obama was receiving favorable coverage. Here are some factual stories that illustrate it. I hope you will reivew them and seriously consider why the quality of journalism has declined. You seemed to have implied it is the campaigns doing it. If you look objectively at the coverage, you will see there is very little discussion of the issues by the media. "Yawning" (comment, 3/27, 11:04) must have been tired. Maybe he or she doesn't realize not Ed Rendell's role in the Clinton campaign is to go on all the talk shows and offer up the latest campaign spin. Not that there's anything wrong with that, right, yawning? It's a time-honored political tradition. Ed Rendell seems like a great guy. I wonder why he can't find more positive things to say about Hillary in support of her candidacy than she's been victimzed by a press.

Really enjoyed the blogger's comment,paraphrased, that she/he couldn't believe Hillry's comment that SHE wouldn't have sat in that pew (Wright's church) for 20 yrs; however she would stay with cheating Bill for 20 plus years. Here's the thing. HRC was a member of the SENATE SELECT COMMITTEE on INTELLIGENCE when she voted for the invasion of Iraq...fellow members, Feingold, Levin, Nelson (FL)and Hagel DID NOT!!!!!!!!!She didn't even read the NIS Report tho HANDED to her by Jay Rockefeller who asked her to read it before she VOTED. Her vote on that debacle was a political strategem, as much else in her life has been.
As an independent with democratic party leanings I was in the beginning a Hilliary supporter. Most of this support was due to the respect I had for President Bill Clinton as a politician. I also saw her as a viable candidate that knew the "fight" in politics. And more than anything I believed that behind the curtain people that espoused equality would not vote for Obama. Well things have changed. I understand some of the establishment with loyalties for the Clintons as Gov. Rendell does. But at what point does this become divisive enough to split democrats? The republicans know how to fall in line but democrats do not, at least not easily. As President Clinton once said, republicans "fall in line" while democrats "fall in love." We seem to be seeing that in this primary. Here is my over-all assessment. I come from a "red state" and I can tell you that no matter who the nominee is on the democratic side, a republican will win. The argument that Obama couldn't win California or NY just because Clinton won the primary is laughable. W won NY over McCain in 2000 and we didn't see a landslide go to President Bush in the general. And I truly believe that Obama can win swing states such as VA and PA in the general election, especially with the right VP choice. Also I am not an evangelical, but many of my large extended family is. I hear more support for Obama from these people than McCain, and certainly more Obama support than for Clinton (which is nil). Deserved or not, Hillary is damaged goods in a general election. Obama has the chance to bring in both sides of the isle where I can almost guarantee Hillary will not. She is not trusted by the right. Obama actually does well in my "family polling" because they want change like anyone else. It takes faith and hope that Obama is that candidate. If anything, the religious understand faith and hope.
Mr. Rose I watched your interview last night with Mr. Ed Rendell from beginning to end. I knew he was going to be on, so as a Hillary supporter, I wanted to make sure I didn't miss it. It was everything I thought it would be and more. What a diamond he is. I hope you do have Senator Clinton on your show. As for your comment about being amused at Mr. Rendell comments about SNL, this reaction of yours only proved to me that you like many of the elititist media/politicians/liberals don't get it. It's one thing to be for Obama but when they beat up and deamonize a fellow democrat oppornent even when it appears she's down and out, I have a real problem with that. We HRC supporters were finally glad that someone had the hutzpah (spelling ?) to say what we wanted to say but had not the power of the pen or TV camera to do it. I was in church choir the Sunday morning after the first SNL show of the season and fellow Hillary supports in the choir and I discussed the impact of this show and how glad we were that finally someone was telling it like it is. I know who she is and what she's done the last 35 years, plus she's married to a former president under whose administration we experience peace and prosperity. Why would I vote for the other guy whose face I saw once at the dem national convention 4 years ago and hadn't heard of since? What does he bring to the table? His speech was politically motivated and should be noted with an asterisk denoting "writting under duress to save his policital *ss." As for his stand an Iraq, I've been an anti-Iraq war protester and have marched at all the major protests in DC and NYC in 2002, 2003 and 2007. I disagree with Dashle who told Mark Green in a radio interview last Saturday that BO has the morale authority on the Iraq war. BUNK! He made a speech at an anti-war rally and wasn't in the senator with the other senators who had to make decisions based on the information they were given. He's such a fraud on that issues. As for foreign poolicy experience, at least HRC didn't claim her foreign policy experience was based on having lived in a country as a child. By the way why didn't the media make a big deal when HRC received endorsements from John Glenn and Murtha? Why didn't we hear that she won New Mexico? All we hear is that she's a divider, comments about her appearance, her laugh, that she's going through menopause. I'm sick of it. I'm mad. You want change? How about the first woman president of the free world!! Wouldn't THAT englighten the world leaders who are mostly male and the men (black and white) in our country who say a woman president would not be respected by other countries. Mostly a woman president of the of the free world would inspire the many women all over the world who have been raped, maimed, mutiliated, beheaded and killed in the name of war, tradition and religion. I love reading anti- clinton posts with women's names on them. One after the other all saying the same thing and using the same examples. It is like watching teevee - the same stuff said by 10 different people pretending they just thought it up!
Charlie, I have watched you for decades and this is the first time I remeber being so dissapointed with you. I know many Hillary supporters who have started watching Fox because at least the coverage is more fair, they don't like Dems but they don't show the bias. As for what the news hasn't told about Obama,The reason I will never vote for him is because of who he surrounds himself with. He goes to a church for 20 years and didn't realize the pastor hated America? Also the media has barely touched his long relationship with Rezko and thru Rezko his connection to Auchi, Saddams' money man. Then there is his relationship with Ayer's the home grown terrorist that on Sept 11th said the thing he regretted about the places he bombed in the US in the 60s was he didn't do enough bombing. And this is the guy who wants to be president? I blame the media that the truth about Obama is not well known.
jawbone - Charlie is always like that when the "media" gets dissed. I think he feels honor bound to defend the dishonorable. Plus more than half his guests - it seems - are media types taling about media issues. It is not a particularly effective defense to deny everything...makes one less credible...but Charlie is not going to change. At least he let the Governor say what he wanted to say since he wants the "get" of having Senator Clinton come on....He would have stuck a sock in anyone else.
Its the Clinton's Machiavellian ways that turn me off. Re: Conversation with Gov. Rendell I am a 68 year old woman who is an active supporter of Sen. Barack Obama's candidacy for president. It is mind-boggling to me that anyone, including the governor who is married to a judge(!) thinks women are bludgeoned by inopportunity because of gender! As Sen. Obama has said,paraphrased, are the facts of his name (!) and race not impediments in running for the highest office in the land? My goodness, Hillary's claim to anything is by osmosis; from her carpetbagging a senatorship from NY (why not run from Illinois or Arkansas?)to foreign policy (Ireland's peace treaty, eh what?)to being the pillar that passed the Family Leave bill (16 days into Bill's first term!) to suthorship of SCHIP (tell that to Orrin Hatch and Ted Kennedy)... What Ed Rendell and Hillary's supporters don't get is that MOST AMERICANS OF EITHER GENDER simply can't stand the bionic woman (sniperfire in Bosnia)...listening to an Hillary stump speech or mindnumbing address is akin to listening to your least favorite teacher or prof...the latest Hillary-Heinlich(sp)Manuever, McAufflife's bullying letter to Spkr Pelosi re superdelegates (translation: Hillary's moneybags won't fund the DCCC anymore)is further proof that Billary, Inc. won't stop the ferocious arm-twisting ever...like the Energizer bunny, she just goes on and on and on.. Every dollar I donate to Barack Obama's campaign is done in the memory of two black women, who, with my mother, impacted my life forever...had they been white, they would have succeeded beyond imagining. OMG, Charlie Rose! Could you actually have doubt that the Clintons, both of them, have been object of more media disdain than anyone else in the last 30 years, much less Barack Obama??? Governor Ed Rendellâ??s comments were a small breath of fresh air in terms of what substance could occur in a national debate. I was surprised to observe that I was actually experiencing physical relief in my body during Gov. Rendellâ??s comments. Someone is actually getting air time pointing out that our country is being deprived of political debate of substantial issues. I was slack jawed listening to the pundits following the recent CNN debate between Clinton and Obama. The six people I watched it with â?? both Clinton and Obama supporters, unanimously agreed that Hillary completely out performed Obama. We all thought her appearance was fresher, she was more approachable, she was engaging, and most importantly she was outstandingly more specific in her answers. But not according to CNN â?? their pundits hands down awarded the winner as Obama. We all wondered which debate they were watching. I believe Hillaryâ??s tears received, and even continues to receive, more commentary than the possibility Bush 2 received during his first campaign that he might be an alcoholic. Even his recent admission did not receive as much coverage. Really, does the possibility that Hillary choked up warrant days of debate and continued commentary as compared to the economy, the war, energy, etc. Only the faintest of innuendo occurred regarding Bush 1â??s possible straying from his marriage â?? and not ONCE has anyone wondered why Barbara stayed with her husband. Neither Rep. Henry Hydeâ??s nor Rep Newt Gingrichâ??s philandering received much more than a blip on the radar â?? all while they were leading and even inciting the witch hunt against Pres. Clinton. These are not the subjects I want to be in the forefront of national political discussions, but since this is the ruler by which the Clintons are measured over and over again, it would certainly be interesting to see just how many other candidates could stand up to 30 years of similar scrutiny. I believe the Clintons are HUMAN, no more or less than their contemporaries and predecessors. To be honest, I have waivered between Clinton and Obama. Like so many others, they both appeal to me. But the media coverage tends to make me more sympathetic to her, because like her or not I donâ??t think ANY of her contemporaries could be called more tenacious. And that makes me think her leadership can better withstand the Washington upenders. Am I angry about the unfairness of the media coverage? You bet â?? not for Hillaryâ??s sake but for AMERICAâ??s sake.
Shame on you Charlie Rose--for giving a voice to the Clinton spin machine. When I turned on the show last night, several minutes into the Ed Rendell interview, I thought for a second that I had tuned in the wrong channel. Was this Hardball with Chris Matthews? When Rendell talks about the anti-women bias behind the reporting of Clinton's New Hampshire tears, he should remember the way the press ripped Howard Dean apart for his over-the-top enthusiasm after a key win. Rendell's "poor Hillary, the candidate-as-victim" spin when questioned about her Bosnia lie, was a bit more troubling. Until she began Obama bashing, Clinton's Day One readiness was the central theme of her campaign. It was a dubious claim to begin with, but the Bosnia story was not mere spin or embellishment. It was fiction, an outright lie. As Frank Rich recently wrote, character--or lack of it--matters. Important questions are being raised about Clinton's honesty and her honor not by a "hostile" media, but because as this campaign has progressed, she has shown so little of both. As a woman, I find her default position when challenged, to play the victim, throughly distasteful. What does it mean, then, that Charlie Rose as virtually promised that if Hillary appeared on his show, he would not ask sticky questions? Inviting Clinton apologists like Rendell on his show in the guise of serious discussion , was less than I'd expect of Charlie Rose, no matter how much he wants Hillary as a guest. If the Clinton candidacy represents the old-style power politics of the backrooom, then last night I saw a little more of Mr. Rose's own backroom maneuvering than I cared to.
Nicole - I am so glad you are not angry. Because goodness knows every other woman who doesn't share your perspective must be angry. Or employed in a competitive job for over a few years. Whatever. I am chary to say this (thanks O'Toole!), but do you think it might be considered "embellishment" to say you are "participating" in media simply by posting on an anonymous chat board? Is that on your resume? Is a letter to the editor journalism? When you blow out a candle are you a firefighter, too? Neat! The Clintons have done great work as public servants and have earned rightfully the respect/acknowledgement of not only "lunch bucket democrats" but all Americans across socioeconomic and cultural/racial lines. In the Rendell interview, you asked: HAS THE MEDIA BEEN BIASED AGAINST HILLARY? WHAT HAS THE MEDIA NOT COVERED ABOUT OBAMA? IS SEN. CLINTON EXAGERRATING HER FOREIGN EXPERIENCE AS FIRST LADY? ISN'T THE WRIGHT TOPIC A CLINTON DISTRACTION? Wow. I hope you invite more experts to delve into these issues objectively. A log of leading news stories and number of days/hours/minutes spent per newscast can answer your first question about media bias emperically. If not, get Noam Chompsky, Deborah Tannen, or any leading linguist to analyze/deconstruct the use of language in reporting news/stories of Sen. Clinton/Obama. Second, what the media has NOT COVERED about Obama is his Senate Record. 11,000 pages missing. Other news agencies such as ABC salivated at the prospect of uncovering more dirt in Sen. Clinton's White House papers as First Lady, only to suggest her presence in the WH at the same time as Lewinsky (see Brian Ross' sad example of National Enquirer style reporting and bias). For future shows, how about doing a simple year by year comparison/contrast of Sen. Obama's U.S. Senate accomplishments/votes/endeavors vs. Sen. Clinton. Instead of focusing on her Bosnia mistatement, why not just be fair and show Obama's mistatements and half-truths and outright lies as well (lots of video footage on youtube for support). The Commander in Chief readiness is a critical debate question. Ask Obama or his surrogates what his credentials are in foreign affairs from involvement in key committees to authorships of policies, etc. Surrounding oneself with strong minds/leaders is only a small part of being commander. Do the same for Sen. Clinton. Too bad Ross Perot is not around in this election; He was keen on pie charts and graphs to show people visually what things meant. Can you imagine mapping bar graphs showing number of years served in the US Senate, number of votes taken, number of yes votes in specific categories such as health, military, economic policies etc. We're missing objective analysis. I am singulary unimpressed with journalists who have come on the show remarking the world is waiting for Obama to rebuild our bridges. How about the more important question: THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE WAITING TO REBUILD THEIR LIVES IN THE HERE AND NOW. Which candidate understands their needs and has the hands-on know how to deliver meaningful, inclusive changes? I look forward to seeing future shows that go to the heart of the matter--stop analyzing speeches and start the dialogue to study actions. Thank you.

In addition you acted (am I making a major leap) surprised about how your colleagues have been so blatantly Biased toward Obama and against Senator Clinton. I was glad that I saw your program last night which I rarely watch any more because Gov. Rendell was succinct, factual and even tempered. That was worth watching. You no longer are worth my time.

The entire media of TV, print, right wing radio and left wing radio has been in 24/7 promotion of Obama mode and 24/7 villification of Hillary mode. It's blatant and shameless. We are lawyers who support Hillary Rodham Clinton because she's the most qualified and most electable candidate in the race. I was not surprised when you were surprised that Gov. Rendell said the media is biased against Hillary Clinton. When one is on the inside looking out, one tends to absorb the feelings and views of one's cohorts. You might want to get out more, Charlie! Think about this: Maureen Dowd wrote a column in which she used the word "bitch" about Sen. Clinton, albeit in quoting a "comedian" telling a "joke." I have never seen any other sitting US Senator, former First Lady, and leading presidential candidate of a major party ( or any party!) be labeled a "bitch" on the pages of the New York Times. I can't even think of a similar term for men and certainly no such word has been used on the pages of the NYTimes about any leading male politician. Sexism and misogyny is indeed alive and well in this country, and bias against Hillary Clinton is rampant among many of leading pundits, analysts, and reporters in the Mainstream Corporate Media (MCM).
I'm shocked that you are shocked to hear that a lot of people think that the media is biased in favor of Senator Obama. It is so evident, that I wonder whether you are watching any news shows. Believe me, it's alive and well and the viewers are well aware of it. My husband, who is totall oblivious to these type of things even picked up on it. Gov. Rendell had it right when it comes to many women and their impression of how the media has treated Senator Clinton. I was very disappointed by Charlie's response to this point. You laughed. I wish you could realize how that comes across as patronizing to many women. With experiences throughout our lives of prejudice in school, workplaces and homes, prejudices unique to being female, please try to understand. We have been told can't, shouldn't, etc. and have watched over and over as the younger and less experienced men get promoted over women who have worked harder and longer. To many women, this election is playing out that same scenario. Senator Clinton has the policy, Senator Obama has the popularity. As for Gov. Rendell's comments about Keith Olbermann, all you have to do is look at the interview he had with Senator Obama about Rev. Wright's comments to know that the Governor is right on. When Senator Obama appeared on Keith's show he stated that he had never been in the pew when Rev. Wright made any hateful remarks. Keith accepted it, but Jonathan Alter (surprisingly) said not so fast. He said that there was no way that Senator Obama had not been there, because such comments by the Reverend were so well known in the Chicago area and if Senator Obama had been attending church regularly, he would have had to been present for some of those type of comments. When the Senator made his speech, he confessed that he had been in the pew for some of the comments. Not a work from Keith. Senator Obama had lied on his show, in his presence and Keith said nothing about it. Yet he has played Senator Clinton's "misremembering" about her Bosnia trip at least twice.
Charlie, I certainly hope you were playing the devil's advocate, because if you truly think the things you were saying then I have lost ALL respect for you. Will you answer? The only thing Gov Rendel was wrong about is the angry women coming back around if Hillary is not the nominee. I am another woman like Helena and JJ!

I agree with women and a few men who believe that HRC has been unfairly treated by the media. Where was the coverage of her appearance at the Annual State of the Black Union Conference hosted by Tavis Smiley? The only Presidential candidate to attend by the way. Where was the coverage of her presentation to the meeting of oil companies referenced by Mr. Hofmeister in your interview with him? He seems to hold in high regard her understanding of the energy crisis facing our country. Biased reporting is not just focusing on anything that might possibly considered negative and beating it to death, but ignoring the positive. I support HRC not because she is a woman but because I believe that she is by far the most qualified candidate to lead our country in these trying times.
I usually enjoy your show because I find you to be well informed on a diverse number of topics and fair in your questioning. This being said I found your interview with Gov. Rendell last night disingenuous when it came to the subject of the media coverage of the campaigns. One would have to be deaf, dumb and blind not to see that the anchors on any network favor Sen. Obama. Chris Matthews and Keith Olberman on MSNBC are be the most egregious in this regard. As Gov. Rendell said, they might as well be working for the Obama campaign. As bright as you are I find it difficult to believe that you did not understand the that humor of the "Saturday Night Live" skits stems from the fact that they are based on truth. Your angry dismissal of them does not change their relevance. I never thought of you as being sexist, but your failure to understand how many women feel about the treatment of Sen. Clinton by the press leaves me to wonder. You obviously also favor Sen. Obama and that is your right, but your undisguised admiration of him as part of your show certainly undermines your journalistic credibility.

The indignation by the distaff side of these posts loses it potentcy against Hillary's incredible "under fire" assertion. She sold her soul. That's something Bush would do. When her turn comes for a WMD-equivalent will or can we believe her? Her shallowness has to be potent to overcome her otherwise astuteness. Like her husband they are both very smart, yet neither seems to have an iota of wisdom.
Amusing interview. Rendell carefully avoided the fact that his wifes' judgeship was a CLINTON APPOINTMENT. He shaded the nuclear industry tie to Obama and seemed incredulous that it was not better reported. Truth- it was researched and found without merit-So HAD NO LEGS. There was a certain level of impatience from you when he avoided questions or resisted a explanation but overall you let him run his campaign speel. If I were to guess Hillary would not be guest- she needs sound bites --she need not have a conversation with someone who might get her off script. Besides your audience is not her demographic-- Now Obama might be truly interesting.
Even my teenage son was disgusted by the condensing sexist attitudes from Obama, his campaign and the media elites. My son was given a school assignment to review/comment on a debate. He read the South Carolina debate transcript, he reactions demonstrated that yes younger people do have do have a greater sensitivity to sexism and racism. Reading the transcript my son expressed outrage at the blatant sexism from Obama and dismissal of Hillary as a serious person. But even more important he recognized that Obama answers did not demonstrate as great of an understanding as Hillary on key economic issues. While the pundits remind us that the youth vote is solidly with Obama consider this, that both my sons will never vote for a political opportunistic who built his base by attending a black liberation church. We have lived in a predominately black community for decades and understand the significant differences between black churches. Any church that continues to exploit black power politics needs to be challenged and confronted for their bigotry and destructive ideology. Black self reliance does not have to come at the expense of more racial intolerance. Why does the media continue to downplay the ideological differences, is this yet another example of bias?
Always enjoy your show. Even when you interview the likes of the Gov of Pennsylvania. To him I would say: How dare he blame Senator Obama for the Michigan and Florida mess! Michigan and Florida CHOSE to hold empty primaries and people were told they wouldn't count BEFORE THE FACT. This is not Obama's doing or fault or responsibility to fix. As to his caucus comments: we stood in our town hall in Maine for hours, voting with our bodies, in a state where absentee votes are included in caucusing and in which it was held on a Sunday afternoon. So, tell me again, Mr. governor, about how people are not given access to caucuses. Caucuses are known for rewarding voter passion and committment. AND, As to the woman factor: I am a 60-year-old woman and am so tired of the women who are supporting HRC SIMPLY because she is a woman. I am a feminist, and therefore, I will joyfully support the right woman WHEN SHE COMES ALONG. The idea of voting gender based only upon gender is NOT what the mothers of the feminist movement fought for! Thank you, Charlie, but please don't pursue HRC. Although you are one of the few I would trust to truly interview her and get some straight and truthful answers to some hard quesitons ...

The most interesting part of the interview for me was Rendell's spinning on the connection between Obama and the nuclear power industry. After protesting that Rose was forcing him to deal the dirt, Rendell stated that Obama was more or less in the pocket of the nuclear industry. The facts are as always more nuanced than he suggested but what is not in dispute is that the nuclear industry has contributed to both campaigns. I thank Governor Rendell for his comments. However, as a woman who also has struggled in the workforce, I do not look at Hillary as the Savior for women. It's just not in the realm of remote possibility that she could wipe out all instances of gender discrimination. Nor, I'm sure, does Obama want to be perceived along similar analogies in his racial identity. I'm sure both candidates have overcome adversity. (Since when did being black and having a name which rhymes with our world's most famous terrorist become an asset?) Let's stick to the issues of our country and quit worrying who has the most obstacles in the press or in their background. Anyone out there who wants to know how best to turn our mortgage crisis around, how best to utilize our military for keeping us safe, and how our children and grandchildren are going to pay down the interest on a massive debt and still manage to help pay for the huge wave of baby boomers and their children who will be relying on medicare and social security??
I watched a portion of Charlie Rose's interview with Ed Rendel, and most times I can find no fault in his interview style, but after watching I felt that he was swaying toward the Obama camp. I thought that he was personally upset by Gov. Rendel's comments on the media bias for Obama. He seemed visibly disturbed and angry. I thought most of his questions for Rendel were appropriate and hard hitting, but there were instances where I did not found fault in is questioning. I can see him questioning Rendel when he used Saturday Night Live as evidence to support media bias, but I agree with Rendel that political satire does address topics and opinions concerning voters. And when Charlie laughed and again said that he couldn't beleive that Rendel used Saturday Night Live as an example - I think somehow that was overkill on Charlie's part. When Rendel suggested that Hilary was getting more negative coverage that Obama, Charlie incredulously asked Rendel if knew of any negative stories on Obama? This is just my opinion on his quetioning on this particular interview. I will have to watch more of his interviews of candidates to form a lasting opinion.
Thank you ,Governor Rendell, for your presentation of the issues as related to Hillary Clinton and her campaign. It was refreshing to hear a synopsis without undue emotion and some balanced reporting of things as they stand. Governor Rendell hit the nail on the head when he stated that media coverage of Clinton is"reprehensible". I have never seen anything like it. I was surprised that Mr. Rose was so surprised to hear that stated. It is painfully obvious. Last night, I watched your interview with Gov. Rendell. And want to thank Gov. Rendell for talking about issues that are not being given air time in this election season. His willingness to talk about the depth of what women are feeling in this election cycle, with the specific example of his well accomplished wife, is a huge story in itself. And I was so disappointed with your impatience at what he was conveying; as Obama would have said, the frustration of the women Rendell is talking about is real, even though you may not get it. And if YOU do not get it, then I lose hope - is it any wonder that the OTHERS do not? A subtle example - We were watching the election results one day, on CNN, we noticed the anchor was clearly more enthusiastic when he announced that Obama had won a state, and more matter of fact when he announced that Hillary Clinton had won a state. One of the only examples I have seen of Obama not being coddled by the press is the excellent interview done by Gwen Ifill of McNeil Lehrer - she treated him as if he was ONLY a human being, and did not laugh along at his remarks, or look like she was worshipping him. She truly did her job as a journalist. The media has been influencing this election - by the questions they ask and DON'T ask of both candidates, by not showing how BOTH campaigns are playing POLITICS. For me,the fall that the Obama campaign takes when it plays politics is so much more - because it paints itself to be above it. I find that I cannot stand that hypocrisy and disappointment. I have read up for myself - about Obama's first Illinois senate campaign tactics; about his touted nuclear bill which Gov Rendell talked about, where he watered down the legislation to favor nuclear companies, who also incidentally gave his campaign money; about how he has taken credit for bills he has not done much work on; about how his mentor in the last year of Illinois Congress who made Obama a sponsor of bills he had not worked on (at the expense of others) - the list goes on. There are individual reports of these published in leading papers, but as Gov. Rendell said, these stories do not seem to have legs. And I cannot understand why - I am truly perplexed. Why don't all major newspapers cover these stories. As an independent thinker, who happens to be a woman, I would love to have the press do the work of questioning all candidates fairly, and thoroughly. That is your job - and the rest of us rely on you to do it. I have read all four books - which are essentially AUTOBIOGRAPHIES: Hillary Clinton's "It takes a Village and Living History;" and Barack Obama's "Dreams from my Father," and "Audacity of Hope." And I have also read a vast amount of material on Hillary written by OTHERS (biographical). On Obama, there is a paucity of good biographical material. Autobiographies show us what the author wants to reveal, biographies are supposed to reveal much more, and be more subjective. What Governor Rendell and others like me are saying is this - we want and EXPECT the media to write Obama's biography, we do not want you to be quoting his AUTOBIOGRAPHY, and fawning over him. He is a great writer and orator; we want you to applaud him for that, and then get to work in checking the facts, and presenting us with an UNBIASED story of who he really is. I was very disappointed with your visible impatience with Governor Rendell yesterday, it was obvious that you could not understand the frustration of many women (and men), as they see Senator Clinton get unfair coverage in the media. The race is even (a tie) when I last looked, and we hope you and the others in the media will please cover it in a fair way in the coming months.
Mr. Rose, you seem surprised to hear of all the sexism and misogyny directed at Hillary. Well, you need to pay more attention. Women are ANGRY and feel they are taken for granted by the MSM and the DNC. And yes, MSNBC and NBC are the worst! Yes, Charlie, Ed Rendell is correct. Women are angry as h*ll. Mostly women around Hillary's age, and poor working women. We are angry at the media for outrageous way they are getting away with using sexism, spin and lies, to trash Hillary. Unfair does not even begin to describe it. And the fact that you seemed to mock that notion, to laugh at Rendell's assertion speaks volumes. Like most men, in the male dominated media, you resent this notion. It came out in your voice and body language. I don't know if you were defending your colleagues in your profession or if, as a man, you simply resent being called on this. If MSNBC had used racism the way it uses sexism, there would be law suits filed. Many of us have been complaining for YEARS about Matthews and his gang. I listened, I HEARD myself when Matthews and Delay mocked Senator Clinton's voice and chit chatted like two middle schoolers about how MEN could never listen to HER. It does not surprise me that Senator Clinton is hesitant to come on your show. Your visible vitriol was evident. You and your show still pushes the idea that somehow Bill saying "roll of the dice" was a horrid, nasty thing. HUH???? Like most women, older, working poor women, we feel disenfranchised. The media, owned by, run by men, has shown its personal dislike for women. The only women getting their shot on the male dominated women, are those who have committed to Saint Obama. Huffington, owned by a woman, a Hillary hating ex right winger, features male columns 80 to 90% of the time. There is no recourse for us. We are mocked for our anger at MSNBC. Tina Fey was banned and trash for supporting Hillary. I have read women like Steinem and Erica Jong called "old hags" on the blogs. I would like to correct Gov. Rendell comments concerning the Obama campaign in PA of late. According to Gov. Rendell, the Obama campaign is doing very little these days. To the contrary, the Obama campaign has organized voter registration activtities (in the spirit of Senator Obama's community organizing in his early days) for the primary thse last few week. Obama people from NY have gone to PA to help. Voter registration for the primary ended on Monday, March 24. Now we will begin to compaign for our candidate in PA.
