Brilliant! Her views are progressive, enlightened and should be heard by everyone. Arabs are not all terrorists as has been sold to the American public. Appreciating that they have aspirations themselves and want peace and freedom has not happened in our dealings with this region. We cast everything in an pro-Israel and oil resources lens which distorts our ability to deal in that region. Robin Wright is brave to speak so clearly as this is still not a discussion that can be easily held in the open in the United States given the political landscape and our adventures in Iraq and now our posturing with Iran.
It is probable that Ms. Wright was not going to say that Hosni Mubarek has ruled Egypt for more years than any other ruler in it's 6000 year history. She was the victim of Mr. Rose's habitual interrupting. She started to say "...longer...", not longest. We don't know how she was going to finish her thought. I can't believe that such a knowledgable and reasonable professional would make such an inaccurate statement.
Charlie demonstrated levels of generosity and grace unsurpassed in the reading of the review. The rest is self-evident.
I suppose it may be a small point, but I do find it odd that no one has brought to the attention of an expert on the Middle East that in "6,000 years" of Egyptian history, Mubarek's period as ruler is not and cannot reasonably be expected to be the longest in duration---50+ years: Pepi I, Pepi II, Mentuhotep I, Ramses II... I am not sure what to make of such an obvious inaccuracy, unless I have misunderstood what was stated in this regard. Another superb show nevertheless.
gee, charlie.... did the,(ahem)..."pot-hole" have 5 fingers? yow! best wishes Chas, martin stewart mccormick
My gosh Charlie what the heck happened to your eye. You must know that us long time viewers are a wee bit distracted wondering what happened while trying to enjoy, as usual, your program....it's TV for heavens sake....a visual medium...at least it doesn't seem to be distracting you. Take care, heal, and thank you for your wonderful program.
RE: "TWO-STATE INEVITABILITY" AND "EVEN-HANDED TREATMENT" WITH RESPECT TO THE ARAB-ISRAELI CONFLICT. Dear Mr. Rose, Please - take a trip to Sderot, Israel and converse with Mayor Eli Moyal. Sderot is an Israeli town just over the border from Gaza. The spent shells of 8,000 Qassam rockets are stacked and piled like firewood alongside the homes of this nerve-shattered constituency. Israel totally withdrew from Gaza in 2005, believing that there would be peace. Ask the citizens of Sderot how much peace they have had since 2005. Mr. Rose, if there is anything "inevitable" and "un-even-handed" with respect to American and World policies towards the Arab-Israeli Conflict, it is that these policies fan the flames of Jew-hatred, hatred of Israel, and disembodiment of Israel piece by piece; this is done by favoring concession after concession to terror. Do most Jewish Israelis favor giving up Jerusalem or Judea-Samaria? No - and there's the rub; a fifth column of Arabs in Israel, who have the right to vote, tip the scales in the polling and the voting. This gives the lie to the actuality of a Jewish State of Israel. And it gives the lie to the "democracy" of Israel; just as a democracy is required to protect the rights of minorities, minorities are expected to uphold the integrity of the State. No one talks about making a Palestinian State on the East Bank of the Dead Sea. It is an oxymoronic idea, especially given that Jordan is the "Palestinian" state intended by Balfour. But for certain terrorist actions and assassinations after WW-1 in addition to Allied postwar spinelessness, there would then have been a Jewish State, inclusive of Judea and Samaria [commonly called the "West Bank"\ in the 1920's. One must wonder: if the Allies had had proper conscience upon their WW-1 victory, meaning: if the Allies had not so utterly disadvantaged the Axis at Versailles, and if the Allies had followed Balfour all the way through and seen to establishing a Jewish Homeland as promised, then perhaps the rises to power of Hitler, Mussolini, and Franco never would have taken place. Now in our time and with all we know of history, we still have appeasement mongers, extorionists, and thieves of lives and souls marketing surrender as victory for Israel. Judea and Samaria are part and parcel of Jewish Palestine [Israel\ dating all the way back to the Roman Empire. The amnesia of the world and the current propaganda of the Arabs denies this. "Palestine" geographically includes Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Saudia, and Sinai. Arabs are welcome to Arab-Palestine, just as Jews should be welcome to Jewish-Palestine. The "inevitability" of the non-even-handed media onslaught against any real, true peace initiative towards Israel has only one goal - to bury Israel alive. Give Israel some air, Mr. Rose!
You have presented a truth, intellect, and experience. Having Ms. Wright come forward to help me have a better understanding of the problems in the middle east. Thank you Charlie Rose for having Robin Wright on your show to give me a more truthful understanding. I look forward to watching The Charlie Rose's Show. Ms Wright I look forward to your book.
Loved her comment that US should "step back." Query: will the M-I-O complex let us step-back? Our embedded arrogance and venality from this quarter's lobby is stronger than any one president or party. An impressive lady.
:-) When Charlie was reading the NY Times book review, I said to my husband, "He's talking through the TV directly to someone who is dead!" My husband said, "So,...some of his best friends are dead." Pause. Then he added, "I mean it." (Dear Bill Buckley :-) NY Times: "...fluent and intelligent...." I thought that was wonderful. His interview, as always, brought out the guest's understanding & wisdom. We respect Robin Wright's observations because of Charlie's respect for her. And what a tribute, to read part of the NYT review out loud for (us and) her mother. I am into family history (genealogy). I know that those of our friends and family who have passed on are just not in their bodies right now. If we were really were on our own in this world, and had to reinvent civilization because people took with them their knowledge when they died, we would all be in HUGE trouble! It is people with vision, like Charlie Rose, who encourage dialogue, encourage people who have gifts to share them - to encourage and inspire others that keeps this world going upward on the spiral, not just around & around, or around & down the drain. It really is like lighting more fires, keeping it going, so that there is continuity in civilization, continuity through builiding on the experiences of the past, learning from things that didn't work and things that do work. That is the voice of reason. Terrorism, groups that only advocate tearing down, will be recognized as the "empty calories" that they are, of no lasting value. Thanks for the interview with Robin Wright. Charlie Rose is part of the solution, not part of the problem.
