In contrast to Hillarys Sylvester the Cat that just ate Tweedy Bird smirk on her face during the last debate Hillary was subdued during the debate on Tuesday 2/26/08. Her shoulders slumped a frown on her face, a stillness to her movement. An acceptance of a fated campaign. A realization that everything she has worked so hard for for the past 8 years is slipping away from her. At the end of the debate she said something very telling, "It has been an honor to run for the nomination for President." A concession statement that she is beaten.

One thing that none of the talking head, pundits mentioned about Hillarys performance during the latest Democratic Party debacle/debate in Texas (2/21/08) was the smirk of superiority on Hillarys face every time Obama was speaking. It was the look of Sylvester the Cat having just ate Tweety Bird. What the pundits have failed to realize is that smirk on her face registers with the viewers even if it is on a subconscience level. Everyone remembers Nixons 5 o'clock shadow and his sweaty lip, does anyone think that the same won't register about Hillarys smirk of superiority.
Having lived through the JFK gush time, I promised myself to never again throw my brains away when it comes to politics. Unfortunately, JFK did not have time to show what more he could do in addition to looking good and sounding jazzy and appointing some good people. Hence, I did not like Ted Kennedy yelling years ago, but was impressed by how he spoke when he endorsed Senator Obama. (See Gail Collins' article in the NYTimes about shouting). 'Could be older age (not quite a boomer, but post-war nevertheless), but this promise to myself kicked in quite some time ago. What motivates it, triggers it? Pictures of dictators at rallies stirring up masses of people. For that reason I don't like the clenched fist in the air which a variety of groups have used. As for Pupster's acid comments: this rage comes from somewhere else. It can't just be the Clintons. Check it out.
Democrats and the Media are smelling a winner in Obama...Hillary is going to continue to slide as more and more people jump ship. It is called momentum. The big nudge came with Caroline endorsing and Teddy backing it up and anointing Obama. The Democrats are going to have a BIG Problem if Obama walks into the Convention ahead in delegates and the polls and somehow Hillary gets the nomination. It will fracture the Party irrevocably, if not American Democracy. Obama represents the redemption of America, the reclaiming of something we had lost with the death of JFK. Call it hope that the special interests don't rule the day, that Americans have become merely pawns in the game to be manipulated by the media and special interests. Obama talks about the big idea. Whether he can deliver on that hope, message is another story. There is a huge amount of inertia in our government and bureaucracy.
Let me add that I find pitiful sentiments expressed by women such as Lauren whose knee-jerk support of Hillary because she's a woman to be sadly pitiful. Hillary an expert on the economy? Please give me a break. I'm a woman, a feminist and ready for a woman to be President. But I don't want a woman who says she wants to be judged on her own merits but relies on her husband's accomplishments to get elected. She rides her husband's coattails, she sends him out to fight for her, she cries for manipulation, and she panders to women in the worst way. We've watched her play the race card and try to change the rules she agreed to when they don't benefit her. And she reminds us everyday why the Clintons are the most divisive name (along with Bush) in politics today. I want a woman to be president. Today, we are blessed with many accomplished women governors and senators, and I hope to one day see one of them elected to the highest office. Based on her own merits. Until then we have Obama.
Until I caught the repeat of this broadcast last night, I had not understood how old, undereducated, poor and downright downscale I am. Pretty discouraging! I thought that I was driven by issues but, apparently it is only stupidity; I thought that I had useful experiences but apparently it is only incipient senility. I am enlightened--but unrepentant.
Several female commenters are insulted that Hillary is referred to as Hillary and her competitor by his last name, and they somehow attribute this to an oppressive patriarchal society. The answer is simpler than that: Look at all of Hillary's compaign posters and buttons -- they all use her first name in prominence. (I'm sure to avoid confusion with her husband.)Do you think condescending men made her do that? Get a clue, ladies. By contrast, Obama uses his last name prominently in his campaign posters. And for full disclosure, I'm a woman. For Obama.
To the comments of Senator Clinton being more frequently called Hillary than Senator, Ms. or Mrs...I have noticed this as well... One thing that has to be realized is she took a very prominent role in her husband's administration, long before being a senator. If you watch old clips of Bill Clinton campaigning, he frequently mentioned "Hillary" and this is how she became known. Revered on the left and reviled on the right it was always Hillary, for a solid eight years of popular consciousness. A woman so singular, she only needed one name, like a Cher or a Madonna. At her rallies her supporters cheer for Hillary. And in all due respect, with the prominent role Bill has chosen to play in her campaign, you cannot get away with just calling her Clinton, there needs to be a clear distinction which one is being spoken of. I honestly feel if Barbara Boxer or Nancy Pelosi were running, they would be called Boxer, or Pelosi. So I think to play this as sexist is a bit of a stretch and not accurate.
I really appreciated the discussion on 2/5/08. What I did not like was the suggestion that it was somehow not understandable why older women, "dutiful women" (Doris Kearns-Goodwin's words) consistently voted. This should not be a surprise: having taken care of the next generation either through raising their own kids and having the preponderance of responsibility for doing so even in changing times or being a good Auntie or friend to youth, women understand the value of a life and preserving life. Re:McMahon's comment about Hillary sending flowers to these women: we don't need flowers, we need representation and the opportunity to offer a somewhat different perspective. Re: Youth on campuses being "color blind":depends upon which campus you're on. Stanford is not a community college in Brooklyn. Comment from a blogger about names. Both are not called Senator. Too bad, it's still not safe to be called Ms. Clinton and not Mrs. And Hillary may be a better bet for those worried about Bill. Question is why doesn't anyone call him Barack? Let the party continue!

This is the type of show where Charlie Rose really shines as an interviewer and moderator. His guests all seemed engaged, comfortable, and interested in reasonable discourse. And it showed in the frequently spontaneous wealth of information and opinions they offered. Thank you!
I'm a fan of the Charlie Rose show and TIVO every episode. That said Charlie really needs to stop blatantly pulling for Obama. It harms the show and Charlie's credibility.
As an American woman, I could not be more proud of Hillary Clinton. She the most qualified candidate running to govern our country. Sexism is more insidious than racism. If Hillary Clinton were male, she would never have been treated as she has through her career. And now, she would be more recognized as being the most knowledgable, qualified, competent candidate. She is the one who is most qualified to help our economy. Could you imagine a debate with McCain and Obama discussing how they are most qualified to help our economy? It wouldn't be very compelling, because neither of them are very qualified. What you saw last night was that in spite of the media, and talking heads, in spite of waves of fancy and fashion with the words of Obama. There are those of us who see through all the hype, and know what's real. Hillary, her work, her abilities, her qualifications to govern our country more efficiently and effectively than anyone else running, are all very real. She is so truly dedicated and deserving. She would serve this country like no other.
Finally, a show worthy of the mission statement. Left the following impressions: the choice is between: Aspirational vs programmatic candidate ... one will Lead the country vs the other who will lead a bureaucracy ...
Why is it that when the most of the commentators talk about Barrack Obama they use his last name "Obama" but when they refer to Hillary Clinton they say her first name "Hillary" not Mrs. Clinton or Senator Clinton. It's a subtle put down that this woman notices and it reminds me of the girl instead of woman syntax from the 60s. That said, I love this program's analysis, especially the historical approach by Doris Kearns Goodwin.
Just watched the 2-5 wrap up show. Great comments by some of the most astute people in the business. Just one thing. At my age, the image that comes to mind when someone says "just hold your nose" is a child about to take their medicine, not "you'll get used to the smell". Maybe that's what McCain's Mother meant when she made the remark. It seems appropriate, given the individuals they were discussing at the time.
WOW!! Your show was THE best election discussion thatâ??s been aired on TV in the past year! It was intelligent, insightful and eloquently expressed. While there was not always consensus in opinions, you're the first media group that truly understands the difference between Hillary and Obama. Perhaps in your follow-up show tonight, could someone explore sam's 2:03 pm comment about absentee votes in California. Is there any way to accurately differentiate between the mailed-in votes and the votes from last night?
As a person who lives in CA, what was not talked about is the absentee votes. It's estimated as many as half the people voted when Clinton had a double digit lead. You only need to look at the ballot and extrapolate the "other votes" which are mostly Edwards vs. Edwards poll numbers to see the number of absentee votes.
We love, Doris Kearns Goodwin but she is so obviously pro-Hillary. We understand the historical implication, but she needs to be neutral and not keeping giving suggestion on what Hillary should do to win. What pundit are not talking about enough is, Clinton name identity, which is really effecting this race more than anything. This is the reason Clinton is doing better at the less afluent voters. They are not as engaged in politics as more affluent people and thus have not has as much exposure to Obama. It's not because poor some how favor Clinton's message, is that they know the name Clinton. Given her huge national lead just a few weeks ago and how everyone on CR show called Obama the underdog. This is really a big victory for him and I am disappointed Charlie is not talking about this point, and on top of that he is bringing back Mark Halperin, who does not get more pro-Hillary and basically repeats Clinton Camp's memos.
I only saw half the conversation and awaiting for the video to post to listen to it in its entirety. I heard the most intelligent comments on this supertuesday. Where I am the show is broadcasted either at noon when most everyone works or at midnight --- Wish Charlie Rose would have a better showtime - It has to be made accessible to more people -
Back in the seventies, when Al Hunt was doing Washington Week in Review, I had an accountant, by the name of Ted, who was the spitting image of Mr. Huntâ?¦â?¦ I happened to bump into Al at an airport baggage claim, and I said to him, â??Hi Ted, how are you doing?â??â?¦.. Mr. Hunt looked at me and said, â??Iâ??m not Tedâ??. â??Yes, you are!â?? I replied. Mr. Hunt, patiently explained to me that he was, in fact not the man I thought he was. The next time I tuned in to WWiR, there he was. Ted, but not Ted! After reflecting on the conundrum, I realized that my inability to tell my accountant apart from Al Hunt, probably had to do with the fact that, while I saw Al on TV nearly every week of the year, I saw my accountant, only once a year. The resemblance had become the reality.
No matter which way you want to view the race for the nomination in the Democratic Party it is a DEAD HEAT. The question that will be answered in the upcoming primaries is will Obama's momentum continues to grow, overtake and eventually overwhelm the Clinton Organization. MS Clinton seemed relieved by the results of Super Tuesday, she had feared the worst. They survived what they thought could possibly be a blow out for Obama.XXXXXXXAs for Huckleberry he unexpectedly survived to fight another day, shades of Harry Truman.
The preponderance of liberals on this show was typical of many other recent panels. I tuned out midway. And I'm neither a Republican nor a conservative. And get new theme music asap!!
