I hope Obama supporters know what they are getting. His broad sweeping generalizations, and slogans do not promise anything, and there will be no mandate for anything. Take a look at http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/02/01/obama-does-harry-and-louise-again/ Obama is sinking health care with a page from right wing advocates. Also please consider that if National Security is again an issue, and it is likely it will be, he will be the least likely to get elected President. In polls he loses to McCain.
Like many other Democrats, I am a Democrat who will NOT vote for Hillary. If Obama is not the candidate, I WILL be voting for the Republican candidate.
There is no doubt that Bill & Hillary will be ready to get things done from day one. Unfortunately they are the wrong the things. Bush accomplished a great deal during his tenure and look where that got us. We need answers for a second millennium America, not the first millennium America.
As a democrat, i would vote for John McCaine if Hillary wins the nominee. And I know plenty of people who would. He may be a Republican but a more trustworthy person.
What experience does Hillary really have? I didn't know that being the First Lady counts so much on the resume. How about bills passed and intelligent voting record? Her healthcare plan years ago failed because she'd rather accept contribution from a pharmaceutical then push forward her agenda.
Bill is backing Hillary so strongly because he knows how competent she is. They've both been there, delivering hope and change in one of the most accomplished administrations we've ever had. Obama doesn't really inspire me, because if there's one lesson I've learned over and over these last 7 years, it's that rhetoric means nothing, and experience and proven competence mean everything. Hillary excels in the debates. She is so incredibly qualified and competent. The debates are what reveal who really knows what they are talking about, who can think fast on their feet about the issues that face us, our options, and plans for policy. What the country really needs more than inspiration is competence. We have a lot that needs to be fixed and improved as efficiently as possible. Hillary was very involved in the previous administration, and I was incredibly impressed by all they accomplished during Bill's administration, especially considering the way the Republican attack machine at the time was ruthlessly and relentlessly trying to destroy them. Obama will still have his chance, when he'll be more qualified and seasoned with experience. We need efficient and effective change and improvements more than eloquence. I try to live an inspired life of hope and change everyday, so what Barack talking about it is nothing new for me. I think people who don't feel much inspired in their daily lives have a hunger for inspiration, and so they are drawn to him for it, but we need proven governing competence more than inspiration at this time. I am not so impressed by the Kennedy endorsements either. It used to be that Ted Kennedy's endorsement was almost like a liberal kiss of death in the eyes of centrists and independents. And when I have heard Caroline speak, she doesn't truly seem to engage much about politics. I think they are both just drawn to the inspiration. Obama can be President later, after he's had even more experience nationally. At this time, I think an Obama administration would be very inefficient and disorganized in it's first term. Ideally, I would like to have both of them for President eventually. And I think for many reasons, Hillary is best qualified to go first. There is no one more dedicated, qualified, and competent than Hillary. Hillary is the one for proven hope and change!

This was such an exciting conversation to listen to. I think that inspiration has a positive ripple affect on people. It moves people to say and do extraordinary things, such as seen in Ted and Caroline Kennedy's speeches. That same feeling of inspiration and enthusiasm is evident in this video as well. That's what tells me Obama should become our next president. "From that eternal silence, something more, a bringer of new things . . . Come, my friends, 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world." Alfred Lord Tennyson Vote for Obama.
Clinton is going to be our next president. And I'm not a big fan. What this means is that Bill will get a second chance to get it right (as suggested on this show). The good news is that this could be the most meaningful presidency in many years. The question is, who wants to get sandwiched between Hillary and Bill?
Poor Boy Mr Edwards is now an also ran with aspirations of remaining a power broker at the convention. With the slimmest of hope, of being a dark horse.
The mere fact that the conversation quickly degenerated from the State of the Union Address by GW to the the Democratic Party presidential campaign signifies that GW has become inconsequential. The conversation that ensued is a prime example of when delusional thinking by media types starts passing for reality. The central fact remains that the 2 big dogs of the Democratic Party, one Edward Kennedy and one Bill/Hillary Clinton have collided as to the direction that the Democratic Party is going to take. If Hillary were smart she would start staking out the Middle or Centrist ground and create a fear of Obama being to the left of Lenin and Marx, while forgetting any allusions to race. While she represents the moderate ground that is not going to get too radical on America. Obama on the other hand has been anointed with the mantle of a JFK, a blessing given as it were from Caroline Kennedy and ratified with the political juice Edward Kennedy can bring to bear. This race has become an old fashion go for the throat knock down brawl.
I know how you feel, Tara Murphy. I have a thing for Charlie, too. Must be hard for you that you arent here in the most wonderful city -the one in which he lives and tapes his show.
Regarding Tara Murphy's comment: As important as the west coast is, New York is still the largest and most important city in the U.S. and along with London is the CENTER of global trade and finance. New York has evolved without declining in importance at all. I also enjoy Charlie's ability as an interviewer enough to check this web site every day.
Bob(second post)comments sum up the very reason my college age sons are supporting Hillary. We are looking for the blue print to change, we don't take our inspiration from rhetoric. We are listening carefully for the "laundry list" these Washington elites dismiss as irrelevant. I am not interested in coming together, I want action, the minute she steps into the office.
How could overcrowd your round table and allow a full hour to discuss the "State of the Union" address of a president who knows nothing of the state of the union ? The free for all that followed was the first time I have seen you lose control of where the discussion went.
I thought Goodwin's getting teared up when describing that her son was inspired by Obama, was illuminating of what is going on with Obama's appeal, among the press and some of my generation, the boomers. I saw self indulgent feel good emotion that finally their kids, where going to be more like they were when they were young..............................................NP I don't share that emotion. I do not feel inspired by Obama. In fact, I feel the same gut aversion, I felt towards George Bush. I hear the same mushy vagueness wrapped in a preacher's syntax. The same cheerleader vapidness from someone who never got the bruises on the field. I did not and still do not hear that in the words of JFK. In his words I hear iron of reality that gives a ring to inspiration, like a bell..............NP The Kennedys are in a better position, than I, to judge whether Obama is a new JFK. Maybe he is. Maybe he can inspire most is the same way. But is the country in the same place as it was in the sixties, economically, and I mean by that jobs and job security. Then the country was growing and needed to address the issues of inclusion, and race and gender. Now the country is imploding from seven years of mismanagement, greed and corruption. Whoever gets elected is going to inherit a horrible mess. They better be prepared to hit the ground running, and get things done in the first 100 days. We do not have the luxury of waiting for the inspired kids to come of age and obtain the skills, and positions they need to make a difference. Even hard headed JFK got handed the surprise of the Bay of Pigs with which he as unprepared to deal with. And I do not see Obama as prepared and hard headed as JFK. Does Obama even have a policy in place, or are "we" supposed to do it for him?..........NP I lived through the sixties We got beaten, and hosed, and put on black lists, and excluded from jobs, and power... for decades. Some us made it through and did some good. If you are voting for Obama you better check it out and make sure he is really ready. If you are voting for him because he is black, you better be doubly sure, because you do not want the first to be a failed Presidency like Jimmy Carter's. And in my opinion that is what I see coming. Inspiring us to don sweaters and turn down the heat and drive slower, and nothing got done, and power went back to conservatives, like Reagan, who I heard Obama praise as inspirational. Sorry this a bit rambling. Not enough time and space to describe all I see coming, another train wreck, and why.
Its amazing how many voters STIll do not do their homework BEFORE choosing a candidate, this includes Oprah who stated "I never watch the debates & I never pay attention to politics & I do not watch C-Span". When Ms. Sawyer asked Oprah "Then how did you decide who you endorse?"!!!( Diane looked dumbfounded at Oprahs answer)..."I dun no I just FEEL Obama-ISH!" If you check Sen.Obamas voting record & his donors list you WILL know all that Hillary, Edwards & Tim Russert REVEALED about Obama in last 3 debates is ALL TRUE! Obama is finally being vetted! He now FINALLY, when confronted over & over, admits his envolvement with Rizko, the slumlord, which has been going on for over 15 yrs.! Obama did return a small amonut of monies to Rizko BUT not near what this sleeze donated to Obama. When Russert stated "Sir you DO have a lobbyist running your New Hampshire campaign & I have the paper work in front of me, & you do take lobby monies." Russert even NAMED the man. Obamas answer was very BUSH-GOP like...saying .."Well Tim you asked me if this lobbyist is running my N.Hamp.campaign & he is NOT. He is an ADVISOR to my N.Hamp.campaign". WOW how BUSHIE of Obama! When J. Edwards confronted Obama on taking money from this lobbyist Obama stated.. "Well John he may have donated to my campaign and when a person donates to us they are LISTED by their jobs & he is a lobbyist BUT it was his own monies he donated." ???? J.Edwards almost screamed.."WHAT? ARE YOU JOKING? It's the same monie Barack!!!" Either Obama is that CLUELESS & GREEN or he is very cunning & sneaky. Either way he is the wrong choice! Plus Edwards & Tim R. & Hillary were all telling the truth about Obamas 100 missing votes in the Senate! Edwards stating " If you are NOT going to do your job & VOTE why are you a Senator?"!!! Also Prtes. Bill did not LIE regarding the voter suppression in Nevada, I know because I called Nevada for 3 days for Hillary & heard over & over "My union is NOT going to tell me how to vote even if they threaten me with the loss of my JOB!" Now did Obama do this? We don't know, YET. But we DO know the suppression was there. The good news is out of 9 casino caucus's Hillary won SEVEN of them! The GOP ran MEDIA is responsible for this hate Hillary/Bill stuff. GOP wants Obama to win because they KNOW they WILL beat him, not so with Hillary. Much tougher battle there. Obama is wayyy more Republican than Democrat & we do NOT need another misirable 4-8 years! I CHOOSE a DEMOCRAT & her name is HIllary Clinton!
I watch Charlie Rose for the guests, not the host. I am amazed that, as an emmy award winner, Monsieur Rose is such an inarticulate, intellectually dense and narrow interviewer. Mr. Rose is quickly becoming a dinosaur. His attempted exchanges with the technological geniuses of America reveals his appalling ignorance of technologies. He still thinks an Apple computer is a "PC", for e.g. His questions are mostly rhetorical. He spiels his convoluted, barely intelligible "questions" and wraps them up by leaning across the table and asking, "right? Am I right?" Mr. Rose is more interested in elevating New York from its inevitable slide into second-class status among cities to the position of arbiter of all things. His favored guests live and work in Manhattan. Perhaps Mr. Rose isn't aware that this is the PACIFIC Century, rather than the Atlantic era. That era is over. New York is not the center of any universe today. It would behoove Mr. Rose to invited more relevant individuals from the West Coast, for example, rather than rely on the old, increasingly irrelevant east coast pundits and boosters. Again, in spite of my lack of respect for his journalistic and intellectual skills, he still draws fairly interesting guests to his show.
Hillary can't make a decision unless she ask Bill. It's time for a change, Hillary and Bill days are over. She was the First Lady, what kind of experience is that? It's time for the Clinton's to exit stage left. GO OBAMA
I would like everybody who is going to vote for Obama to know: You are going to have a republican president again in 2008. It will be war forever (because we have Iran in the region). The dollar will collapse and economy can't survive in this environment. Obama CAN NOT offer us anything but his charismatic face. Hillary offers REAL PROGRAM that scares everybody who has deep pocket with money including media.
Again. On Super Tuesday, 22 states hold their primary. Recent polls are available in 13 of the 14 largest states, the remaining states have few delegates and no polls. Here is a compilation of the polls: (1) In 9 or 13 Hillary has a double digit lead, (2) In 1 of 13 (Illinois) Obama has a double digit lead, (3) The remaining 3 are too close to call. There is only 1 week till Super Tuesday. You do the math.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My, goodness, Caroline Kennedy, Teddy Kennedy, Bill Bradley and Tony Morrison (the gal who labeled ole Bill as the 1st Black President) among others have endorsed Barrack Obama for President. It looks like the Democratic Party power brokers and benfactors are moving away from Hillary Barack has proved that he is electable in 2 contests, Hillarys negatives and the Dems dislike for her strong arm tactics are now coming home to roost for her. Barrack is gaining mometeum while Hillary and her machine is loosing traction. Can you imagine Teddy Kennedy endorsing a loser? He will put whatever resources he can muster behind Obama , and those are considerable. They will be both political and monetary. All those favors he will call in and all those benfactors he will call from coast to coast...Ohhhh lord the money, influence and political grass roots organization that will be at Barrack's disposal. Now its gona be a real slug fest of a contest. Hillary should be afraid, very afraid as her worst nightmare is begining to unfold. The Clinton winning machine is begining to unravel before her very eyes. That is why she put so much effort into SC. She really wanted to nip Obama in the bud and make him an also ran. However she got trounced by Barrack and that is enough to give the Dem Party influencers and benfactors reason to jump ship...
But for the quiet, sober, uninflated commentaries of Evan Thomas and Ronald Waters, the Show was a huge disappointment, if only in contradistinction to the loosened tongues of what the "right wing" refers to as the "liberal left". Wherever the Show was headed, it got there last night mostly thanks to Mr.'s Thomas and Waters, the designated drivers in the car full of drunks. As for the disrespect, condescension, and arrogance shown towards President Bush, many consumers of "respectable" media will never see these reporters, historians, and commentators in quite the same way. In fact, they will be remembered as having disrespected the highest ideals of their profession. The President gave a State of the Union Address, that could be a surprise only to those so self-absorbed in their views that they are still stunned to see that in the eyes of the President, one plus one equalled two in the year 2000, 2001, and so on throughout his terms of office. This stands in contrast to half to two-thirds of the country, which seems to think that with enough spin, one plus one equals eleven. The back bone of the country finds the President to be a humble, quiet, refreshing source of confidence in many regards, not the least of which is his realistic attitude towards "legacy", which is that time will tell. His motivation is not to be the loudest, self-interested voice at the bar; his motivation is to get the job done. His legacy will be largely dependent on the extent to which his successor does not unravel and destroy his good work, may his successor know the difference between his good work and his not so good work. As well, one hopes the media sobers up, while as a nation we are still free enough to have a media.
Hillary had a moment of Honesty when she choked back the tears in NH. The honesty had to do with the fact that, at that moment everything she had worked and planned for at least the past 8 years was slipping away from her. Now any emotion or outrage is feigned to garner sympathy, as she said she "found her voice." How BAD does she want to be President, it is her EVERYTHING. She would dry up and blow away if she fails, deflate and fall to the ground like a Led Zeppelin. Hillary is an arch behind the scenes manipulator as she sees nothing can be gained from working openly. The real question about Hillary is if there really is anything behind the curtain, or is it all about having power and nothing about what to do with it. The first 8 years showed that the direction of the wind was tested before anything was even said. The bet is that if Hillary becomes President ole Bill will be seen and not heard from, except as an attack dog or cheer leader. He will be a political advisor to Hillary whose usefulness will be in decline as she has found her own political acumen. Anyone believing that Ole Bill went off on his own and played the attack dog role in SC is foolish to believe so, it was all orchestrated. After Hillary's scare in Iowa all the stops were pulled out and it was decided that Obama had to be nipped in the bud in SC so that he would become an also ran. From seeing Bill lately, he doesn't look good, his health is in question. Hillary for all her "feminist rage" is still afraid of her father and mothers judgements of her. She is and was unwilling to confront those demons to be her own person. As such she is a deeply conflicted person. That is the weakness in her armour, she is unwilling to commit herself or confront anything directly and as such will be jousting with windmills even if she ascends to the Presidency. She will be battling those "Right Wing Conspiracy's" from now until doomsday. Then there is another question to be answered, underneath all that "radical rhetoric" that Hillary thinks she believes in, lies that right wing conservative core that she so heartily abhors. She is after all still her fathers daughter a Gold Water Girl, and those beliefs even though unspoken still resonate within her. That is the real Hillary that lies underneath all the conflict Thus for all Hillary espouses, if her Father was a tyrant, Hillary is a tyrant to. In America there are too many competing interest for power for Hillary to have clear sailing to get any agenda she has implemented. If memory serves you well, you will remember that the Clinton's inherited a Democratic Party majority in Congress in 1992, what exactly did they get accomplished with that majority. The Democratic Party is even more Centrist now than in the early 90s as most the newly elected Democrats to Congress in 2006 were conservative in nature to be electable.
Your show proves Bill Clinton's point about the media coverage. Hillary is far ahead in the overwhelming majority of the states in the Super Tuesday primary with large leads in many of the larger states. She is far and away highly likely to win the nomination. But, based on this program, you'd think Obama will breeze into the nomination on the strength of his inspiration. I watch and love your show, but a little objectivity would be nice.
Anyway, the Democratic Convention is around the corner, and Al Gore will have one last chance to become the Democratic candidate who can win in November of 2008. Democratic party rules allow anyone to stand for the presidential nomination in the August convention, irrespective of whether they have fought the primaries. If the delegates fail to provide an absolute majority for one candidate, a second round of voting is held, and delegates are free to vote as their conscience dictates. You can check this thread at the Daily Kos website: Here is why the other candidates are afraid of Al Gore at the Democratic Party Convention. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/1/29/4248/16929/208/445232
It is interesting to see the debate that is going on right now regarding the 2008 presidential elections. It sounds childish if anyone stops for a second and try to analyze what is going on. First, the entire American mainstream media makes a big deal that the Democratic Party has the change to nominate for the first time as its candidate for the 2008 presidential election a woman or a black man. The mainstream media already defined the competition as being between a woman and a black man â?? in another words the race has been defined to be by gender and color. Then Bill Clinton who is on the side of the white woman who is running for president says something against his opponent the black man â?? and the entire world is on Bill Clintonâ??s case, as if he was giving a blow to the black man below the belt. It is PATHETIC. Anyway, millions of Americans still have not given up that Al Gore will be the Democratic Party candidate in November of 2008, and this late in the game when democrats were asked if they would support Al Gore if he jumps in the race during the Democratic Convention 86 percent of the democrats say that they would support Al Gore if he enters the race. I still donâ??t understand why the mainstream media and the American public canâ??t grasp that we have a perfect storm ahead of us, and it is not the time to make an experiment by electing a woman or a black man as president of the United States in November of 2008. Today, still time for the American people to wake up and elect the best available candidate from both parties, the person with the highest stature not only in the US but someone with very high prestige and clout around the world, and his name is Al Gore. Please read the following at the Daily Kos website regarding Al Gore: Democratic Convention the last call for Al Gore. Sun Jan 20, 2008 http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/...2840/473/439898 Question: Pool: Would you support Al Gore if he stands for the presidential nomination in the August Democratic Convention? Answer: 86 % of the democrats said YES. ***** Al Gore - Democratic Party candidate in 2008. http://www.elitetrader.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=74835 So far there are over 412 postings on this forum since August of 2006 giving all the reasons in detail why Al Gore should be the next president of the United States.
As a devoted viewer from your programs inception. I was perterbed to listen to the comments on tonights show. Where was the objectivity? Yes,I have been an ardent Democrat throughout my life.My wife and I worked diligently for Robert Kennedy and Tom Bradley. Why are phrases like "phenomina, and Tidal wave " being used on an attractive yet inexperienced candidate at a time when our nation is in a crisis akin to the 1932 election of Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Senator Clinton is criticized for reaching back to the 1990â??s. But when Senator Obama reaches all the way back to the 1960â??s, to Camelot, it is seen as a great triumph? The 1960â??s doesnâ??t exactly sound like change to me. I thought his campaign was supposed to be about the future. I doubt if most of his supporters are old enough to remember Jack Kennedy. Well, I am old enough and Obama is no Jack Kennedy! Should the Democrats nominate Obama the Republicans will eat him alive. He stands no chance in the general election and if somehow he does get elected, he has little chance of getting Congress to bend to his will. Despite of all the charisma and rock star hysteria, there is no substance. Does anyone know where this guy stands on more than one major issue? Whereâ??s the beef! Oh I forgot, that catch phrase was before his time.
My apologies. Rather than Mark McKinnon , I meant Matthew Dowd. The AUTHOR of most of the Bush illusions, along with Karen Hughes. Lotta experience in Republican dirty tricks there, now "accusing" the Clintons of dirty tricks. Irony, thy name is Dowd. Mr. Dowd's former Republican friends will MAKE SURE Obama gets destroyed in the general if he gets the nomination, no holds barred, and no lofty "inspiration" required.
Dear Charlie, Thanks for a wonderful show. As an adult who grew up as a child during the age of Camelot (Kennedy years), I must say that Obama sort of rekindles those feelings we experienced at that time. A time of possibilties. A time when we were proud to be Americans who dearly loved our country even though we had our differences.I think overall the nation respects and cares for Senator Clinton and thank her for all she has done. But the time has come for a NEW ERA of CHANGE.I believe Obama can UNITE us now and is best to get the country there.
Dear Charlie, What a offensively shallow program. The very same "elitist" Washington press corps who gushed over George W. Bush in 2000, never pressed him on issues, supported him because they "liked him" better than Gore.........who ENABLED this silly little frat boy, through two elections, while he dismantled so much of what we all love about our country, financially, internationally, morally, and more. And to include the campaign director whose deceptions helped get this president elected TWICE, is appalling. NOW you speak of the damage he's done, of what we need to regain, of how inept he has been, which many of us could see in 2000, of how incredibly out of touch and incompetent, which could have been seen in his previous record had you elitists not gushed about him without checking that record, because you thought he was more "likeable," and just the guy you wanted to have a beer with. And now, once again, because Caroline Kennedy thinks so, you gush, as if such an "inspiration" will clear your own conscience for having been so wrong before. Hustling the media "group think," AGAIN, without telling your audience that connection to Teddy Kennedy implies connection to the very far left, liberal side of the Democratic Party; the side that "inspires," but never actually WINS. Mark McKinnon knows how the Republican machine will obliterate Obama; he helped do the same to John Kerry. Good grief, Charlie. We look to YOUR show for more than that.
I have to agree with Beryl to a degree: there may be just a tad too much advocacy for Obama. However, I'm glad you brought up Hillary and Obama's debating skills. His performance in the debates is the only thing that gives me pause about voting for him. After the primaries, other than the Democratic National Convention - where he would most assuredly shine making his acceptance speech - his other greatest impressions are going to come solely from the debates. Hillary is very impressive in the debates. But I, for one, am going to vote for inspiration. Obama will get my vote. (Had to make one small correction)

The distinction between Obama and Clinton could not have been sharper in this evening's program; When Clinton was being discussed, all the talk was about their internal politics, Bill's legacy, etc. etc. When Obama was being discussed, the focus shifted to the people, the citizens of the United States, how they are inspired towards action by Obama's message and what it means for the directions of our country. For me, the decision of who to support is a no-brainer; American politics should be about the people, and NOT the self-serving legacy of the Clintons. Obama shows a mirror to the people in which they can see their greatest hopes, their greatest possibilities, and that, is what we need right now, more than anything.
What gives? I thought the science series was supposed to be tonight? Pre-empted by an out-of-touch leader?
This evening's discussion of the Democratic campaign typified what makes many people dislike, distrust and disdain the media. On the basis of Caroline Kennedy's endorsement, Charlie and some of the guests unilaterally declared Obama the possessor of the "inspiration" that the people want. Well, as Evan Thomas tried to tell you, Charlie, but you were too busy emoting over Caroline to hear, you have no idea what the people want or think until they tell you with their votes. There are millions of people for whom Caroline Kennedy's opinion cuts no more ice than Amy Carter's or Susan Ford's. There also are millions of people--though I admit that they happen to be women--for whom Hillary Clinton's candidacy, indeed, her entire brave career, is deeply inspiring. If you, Charlie, are going to become an unabashed booster of one candidate, you have lost all effectiveness as an interviewer. I believe you owe your viewers an apology for tonight's performance.
Dear Charlie Thanks for the "Live Coverage". Now when will we see that? Tomorrow?
So......, what happened to the 'live' coverage? Regards, Duncan
