The conversation was very inspiring especially on MLK Day. Great book also
This was an award-winning interview, with one of America's most distinguished scholars who is a champion of the people. This makes us as African Americans especially proud. John Hope Franklin, age 90 when this show was aired, eloquently spoke the charge of our next president, which is to address the needs of all Americans; epecially those who are less fortunate in this land of abundance. In addition, kudos to Charlie Rose for an extraordinary interview that is award-worthy. I viewed this interview twice on television, and will now purchase a DVD along with Professor Franklin's book, "Mirror to America." In closing, this interview which was perfectly timed for Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday, should be anlayzed by students in the classroom, from elementary school through college and furthermore could be a substantive topic of discussion at the dinner table. The content of this interview, if implemented, could be the foundation for a transformation of America, at home and abroad forever.
The interview is very inspiring to listen to a guy who has been there in the thick and thin of things. How graceful and eloquent he was speaking on his experiences. I am going to look for his book, and read it. He sure is lucky to have lived all these years and see the changes between when he was a young man and he changes now. Many people talk about about 200+ years of democracy, while the fact is America has only been fully democratic since 1965, it has only been some 43 years ago. How fascinating that is.

A comment to Charlie Rose: I truly enjoyed your Jan 22, 2008 rebroadcast of your Dec 2005 interview with historian John Hope Franklin and questions concerning his book, Mirror to America, which I had read previously. For more insight on your question to Dr Franklin pertaining to whether racism can be eradicated in America, I recommend you read The Derrick Bell Reader(Eds, Richard Delgado and Jean Stefancic) and that you interview on your show Professor Derrick Bell,J.D., a permanent visiting Professor at New York University. Professor Bell posits that "white privilege" historically relied upon by many Caucasians, explains their refusal to acknowledge or even discuss racism in America or to see minorities as human beings worthy of respect. Frequent attempts to denigrate efforts by any Americans to have an effective dialogue on racial discrimination can be explained by reliance on white privilege by white Americans as well as the few minorities who claim that the United States should be seen as colorblind. In my opinion, this dilemma will not be resolved until there is an effective and widespread dialogue on white privilege and its operation in American society in general.
A very enriching, inspiring interview with John Hope Franklin giving evidence that great, intelligent and good people come from all races and backgrounds. It would be good to have a similar interview with an indigenous American, representing another group of human beings that were badly treated--to put it mildly--by "white" settlers. I would also like to recommend an interview with Susan Nathan, author of The Other Side of Israel My Journey Across the Jewish/Arab Divide. This is an impressive book inspiring both hope and sadness re race relations in the Mideast. phoffman

The conversation with this great and gifted man is extremely significant for MLK Day. Besides reinforcing the vision of Dr. King, it manifests the long lasting impact of 92-year-old Professor Franklin's personal testimony as a unique and exemplary "Freedom Pioneer." He is an American hero. I look forward to the rebroadcast.
