In June 2003 Brazzil magazine published an article, "Brazil and the Angolan Connection" by Ricardo C. Amaral, and the article said: Angola has a strong connection to Brazil and to the United States because these countries were the main places were Angolan slaves landed in the New World. Brazil was the largest recipient of these slaves. It is time for Brazil to help Angola and try to repair some of the injustices done to the Angolan people. Randall seethes with the most destructive and debilitating kind of assertions, that blame all our troubles on others, specifically in this case on what happened to our ancestors! It's in his case, I believe, a most patently obvious rabble-rousing at its most insidious! People have to finally take responsibility for their own progress--they cannot blame others in the next century! This is as good an example of the kind of "crutch" argument that teaches Blacks that they both are owed something by people far removed from their present plight (currently called entitlements) because of what happened to them one hundred fifty to two or three hundred years ago--and that they have a built- in excuse for any failures personally or as a people. Self-reliance is a noble goal. Rabble-rousing by playing the historical blame game is counterproductive and openly designed to set one race/ethnic group/nationality, etc. against the other. What credit goes to those good people who indeed many years ago ended the wrongs? I'm reminded of the wife who is still complaining to the husband when they are eighty of something that happened in their twenties. Or the man of fifty who complains--as his excuse for his current problems--that his mother liked his brother better, etc. One cannot complain forever! History should be accurate if it is to be a useful guide to the future, but it should not be used as a bludgeon against people dozens of generations later. Else, how could we ever deal with the Japanese or Germans, etc.? CTR

Excellent show Charlie Rose. Check out the interview with the President of Hati, Aristide, March 8, 2004 by Amy Goodman of "Democracy Now". They covered the story. March 08, 2004 EXCLUSIVE: ARISTIDE SPEAKS TO DEMOCRACY NOW! IN MOST EXTENSIVE ENGLISH-LANGUAGE INTERVIEW SINCE HIS REMOVAL FROM HAITI At approximately 7:20 am EST, Democracy Now! managed to reach exiled Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide by cell phone in the Central African Republic. His comments represent the most extensive English-language interview Aristide has given since he was removed from office and his country. http://www.democracynow.org/2004/3/8/exclusive_br_aristide_speaks_to_democracy

Charlie, Asassination of Bhutto...sounds familiar?...like what happened in Haiti--only Bhutto wouldn't stay away??? Easy, blame it on Al Quada so no one will research what really happened...all while proclaiming our commitment to democracy. Did we really want Bhutto to win the upcoming election? Or did we "need" to support Muscharaff at all costs?

Why aren't you bringing it to a larger audience and in the newspapers. What an outrage, one more that this county should be ashamed of.How can we help?

In terms of the statement that "no media" covered the overthrow of Aristide, I found it odd that neither Robinson nor Rose mentioned that Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! actually accompanied Maxine Waters on her trip to Africa to rescue the Aristides. The Democracy Now! coverage of the coup, kidnapping and rescue was extensive. You can find it in the archives at democracynow.org.

Charlie, you bring out the fact that no news media has brought to light the fact that it was the U.S. and the Bush Administration that sent the thugs that deposed the president of Haiti. Haven't you the influence to present this to a larger audience than just those that might have caught this conversation with Mr. Robinson. I look forward to updates on this situation. I look forward to see if anyone calls this administration on its misdeeds here. It claims it wishes to set up a democracy in Iraq while it quashes one in its own backyard to the benefit of its wealthy friends in Haiti?

Mr. Robinson probably don't know the history of Brazil, but my great great grandfather was a major abolitionist in Brazil and he did most of the fighting to end slavery in Brazil as a senador at the foor of the senate in Brazil. His father also wrote many articles against the institution of slavery. His grandfather wrote the major document when he was Prime Minister in Brazil that influenced all subsequent laws in Brazil in an effort to end slavery.

It is naive of Mr. Robinson to expect that people here in the United States know anything about Haiti's history. Americans are a very ignorant bunch regarding the history of other countries, even history teachers in high schools and universities don't have a clue about Brazilian history and Brazil is a major emerging country - I know it for a fact since I wrote a book about Brazilian independence to try to educate the American people about Brazilian independence the book tittle was "The Greatest Man in Brazilian History". By the way, I write articles all the time about Brazilian history and its economy and today most Americans don't have a clue of how fast South America is disconnecting from the United States. I wrote a number of articles about the ongoing transfer of influence in South America from the United States to China. From a South American perspective the United States it is history and represent the past. .

Charlie, Did you read the book? I get the impression you were not convinced about the events that occurred in Haiti. You stated it was Mr. Randall's beliefs. What happen to your research? You questioned whether Haitian tragedy was printed in the US newspaper. Like the white press, you see the unimportance when the US is at fault. Mr. Randall is creditable and you disregarded his understanding of what goes on in the Caribbean. Randall Robinson, An Unbroken Agony: Haiti, From Revolution to the Kidnapping of a President
