If you don't understand the very definition and tradition of 'soft power' in the discussion of international relations, you have no business discussing or dismissing it. Read up before you post.

Gosh,I forgot all about Mr Armitage. He does sound an awefull lot like the frog that puffs himself up to make himself sound like something other than a dullard.

Sorry folks, I am a little late on this comment, but real life takes precendence. "Soft Power", "Hard Power" and "Smart Power" all sounds like a Viagra commrcial. I guess some people can make a career out of anything.

Armitage is a criminal and his crime directly undermined the security of our country as well as the personal security of some really decent and devoted American patriots. Whatever he has done in the past is utterly eclipsed by this crime. Until he pays for it, he can have no credibility whatever. His appearance out of jail and on this show is an affront to law and the democratic experiment. Rose owes an apology. Armitage adds nothing to this presentation. So called soft power is as old as any clever strategy toward empire. Why wouldn't they want to be like us?? Why wouldn't Indians want to be slaves to the British Empire to be more British?? Or, the Welsh more Roman?? "Soft Power" is a toilet tissue - and that makes it a nice counterpart to "compassionate conservatism."

In my opinion, the term 'Soft Power' is a modern term for the age-old wisdom of; 'Leading by example'. We have been displaying some truly atrocious examples of our conduct to the people of this World. It is very important that we all know this. Nye and Armitage are stressing that such conduct is extremely wrong, our misdeeds present an immense threat to our society's well-being, and that it must be discontinued. Currently these two men are utilizing their popularity and influence in an attempt to accomplish some good. When American people are able to individually and collectively lead our lives with considerate and responsible manners, we will, then, be capable of assuming the roles of leadership elsewhere.

Overall thought the two had some cogent commentary re hard and soft diplomacy or was it force? *** The idea of incarceration is only valid if it's prioritized by first deserving first served. Cheney's still free. Shrub. The CIA en masse. (Meritless to date, directly or indirectly responsible for Kennedys, setup Pinochet, and Plame was in counter-proliferation - which says it all re effectuality - no reason to out her of course, rendition yadda, yadda.) *** Pelosi should be spanked thoroughly for being so ineffectual. We seem to only excel at dysfunction.

I'm glad Charlie is hosting these "war criminals" because it gives us a chance to see them attempt to explain themselves. It is clear we are in Iraq to stabilize the oil supply, and it also seems obvious that there were plans in place to invade Iraq prior to 09/11/2001. Cooperative Research www.cooperativeresearch.org has a great 911 timeline for those who seem to have questions about our involvement. I was glad to see Valerie Plame on the show a few days ago. It is refreshing to compare her testimony to the comments by other guests. Thank you, Charlie, for providing a forum for these people to share their views.

Take the names, Armitage and Nye, and their faces away. Read or listen to only what they said. The most thoughtful perspectives, legitimate ideas and common sense I've heard in years. I am hopeful that our prospective Presidential candidates will hear what your guests had to say today. As the candidates appear on your future programs will you ask them about their views of this report? Thanks, Charlie. Good work.

Why is it never discussed that Pakistan craves in its national DNA a unstable and weak Afghanistan..I am not saying I have the magic bullet here, but the coalition led by the US cannot succeed without a new understanding by Pakistan what the benefits are with a stable and democratic Afghanistan can have...better us than Russia helping them..

Charlie Rose please don't make me not capitalize your name!(I never capitalize people names who I don't r-e-s-p-e-c-t for instance, like lil bush, the prince of darkness cheney, ugly old rice, and "old uncle Fester" from the addams family richard armitage! (Who I believe "outed" CIA operative Mrs. Valerie Plame Wilson.)either him or the "Simon Von Sinister" look alike from the old Underdog show robert novak.) I agree with you 100% Jim Griffin!(Say, Jim Griffin I think Rose had Mrs Wilson on his show 2 or 3 days ago.(Check his archives..)But, I don't know why Charlie Rose who I truly respect keep inviting these "war criminals" on his program.(They all should be in "freakin" PRISON!If he invite them on it seem like he should ask them really difficult questions!)(like why did you out Mrs. Wilson? Why are we in Iraq? Where is OBL? Is lil bus going to hang the PM of Pakistan if he crosses him? Wake up! Charlie Rose! don't become "blinded" by the "bush regime" like your little friend from france with the BIG nose! PRESIDENT sell-out! Oops! I meant sarkozy!(Where is his Misses?)(She left him because she didn't want lil bush to kiss her on the cheeks (and get rabids!) whenever she had to visit this country!)(Good move Miss Sarkozy!)(especially, when you feign a cold! recently instead of, coming to eat the "blood poison" hamburger of lil bush....)Wake up!Rose but,I am sure that you want!

Charlie: You were marvelous tonight! Questions to the point to Armitage and Nye, followed by your insightful comments, you were respectful, gracious, you were the best! And... some humor. I couldn't help by blow you a kiss when you said "will see you next time". Indeed! I will be looking for you every night. You fullfill my need to hear intelligent and educated people, and you surely find the best in the world to interview. The comments above by Jim Griffin are so unfair and biased. What a narrow minded fellow!

Great interview. Important. One has to comend Armitage and Nye for their efforts to bring about a public discussion on the role of soft power and a presidential debate on just what that role should be. The timing, in fact, could not have been better, given the NY Times Magazine feature article on O'bama's substantive views regarding how me might conduct our foreign policy, views very much in line with the CSISC report. One can only hope that this will hit the radar of the other major media outlets and ultimately come to be a defining issue in both the primaries and the general election. Charlie, please do what you can to continue to make that happen!

What spy or traitor is Charlie going to have on next? Ruchard Armitage may have compromised the security and lives of people who worked on behalf of the US by "outing" Valerie Plame's identity. He should be prosecuted, or at least discredited, not given a forum like the Charlie Rose show. Is Mr, Rose planning to have Ms. Plame on in conjunction with her new book, or is he going to have another fawning interview with the old war criminal Henry Kissinger?
