Kissinger is just trying to save his ass from the truth of his and Nixon's complicity in the destruction of Tibet (by payoff by China) His reputation as "opening up China for trade" will go down in history as the darkest deed of mankind...especially simultaneously selling out America to China. We are where we are today, because of this man. I thought Sarkozy's & Bush's protest to boycott Opening Ceremonies was real, it wasn't. It was just a way to up the ante in the ultimate payoff he and buddy bush got....like Nixon and Kissinger...S.S.D.D. what "payment" Sarkozy and buddy Bush got we won't know for a long time. It took many years to determine Nixon's and Kissinger's bribes. They "opened up China for trade" by first using the Tibetan Freedom fighters as "irritants" to China (CIA training Tibetans in the United States; then, by pulling the CIA support (after, they got their trade agreement) Geo-politics of the rich and greedy. We are either going to wake up to this fact, and change things; or forever be their puppets. I certainly hope the French are more clever than Americans at getting caught in this trap,eh? French 24 TV fell for Sarkozy's lie...and are now trying to make Dalai Lama out as hypocrite for cutting off Chinese corrupted branch of monks/nuns. It time to ask the hard questions, folks....and demand answers this time...and consequences. Kissinger played his dupe Nixon,and neatly sidestepped him when he sank. I wouldn't mind this man being confronted just once with a question that exposes him for what he is. History hopefully will expose the entire man.

Mr. Kissenger may be very smart and pragmatic but he does not understand that from time to time doing what is morally correct must be done for the sake of who we are as a country.

Reading the comments was almost as interesting as listening to Kissinger. He's right on about China - as long as the US continues to misunderstand Chinese sensibilities, the Chinese will continue to have despotic relations. As Charlie said near the end, you need to see the world from the other side. For the Chinese to lose Tibet or Taiwan would be too much for their pride and the people of China would not tolerate a government that allowed it to happen. There would almost certainly be an uprising. The Chinese government must save "face" on these issues, and in China, "face" is more important than substance. The Chinese want an end to their "century of humiliation."

Kissinger is like a character out of Dr. Strangelove. While he is capable of acknowledging the higher ethics of US Congressional respect afforded to the Dalai Lhama, his overriding "pragmatism" trumps ethical rightness. Scary. Here is a man who cannot travel to some European countries for fear of being arrested for war crimes. There is 40 years of blood on this man's hands, and he should be regarded as a member of a criminal organization, along with many of his contemporaries ( Pinochet, etc.).
Kissinger's views on the Dalai Lama misses one key point. The Tibetians are just the most visible of a number of ethic groups in the hinterland that are completely surpressed by the political forces in Beijing and the business interest of the coastal Chinese cities. If we follow Kissinger's advice and abandon the Tibetian cause, we will be paving the way for the Chinese authorities to commit the tragic elimination of remaining cultural diversity in the world. Henry Kissinger consistently views the world through his realpolitik lens where making secret backdoor deals with criminals lurking in dark hostile places pass off as strategy. This is what has led to so many crises from the deceit of Vietnam, the rise of Pol Pot in Cambodia, the overthrow of democracies in South America, and current mess in the Middle East. When will this man finally be discredited?
Love your show Charlie, and I have a HUGE interest in China, particularly Chines Politics, but please at least have someone else on the show with Kissinger next time to bounce ideas off of.
Kissinger loses none of his edge. Astute, deeply insightful, with such broad experience in diplomacy/policy making, as well as scholarly analysis.(There is serious objectivity--though clearly a "history" and baggage, I think he would be first to admit to--we all enter the room with a past). With the three China experts, this was a very welcome close up on a moment in political evolution that has drawn little notice in the American media.
Although he does explain the political changes in China regarding the selecting of internal leaders, Kissinger gets too much coverage. He should not be on more than once a year. I fail to see the value of his input which justifies his near monthly appearances. It would be better to have some tv-friendly scholars to explain these changes.

I actually wished it interview could have been longer - the first recent Kissinger interview I can say that. I wouldn't have thought Speaker Nancy Pelosi introducing the Dalai Lama for his Congressional Gold Media while the Chinese communists are having their meeting would be that big a deal. The Chinese after al invaded and brutally occupied his country and history isn't going to forget it.
Sadly we won't know the whole truth about kissinger until he's dead, when its too late to be held accountable.
What have we replaced "realpolitik" with? Delusions?
Charlie, there's gotta be less objectionable 'China-experts' available than Hank.
The problem is that Kissinger has too much gravitas in Washington despite his shady past and war crimes. So Charlie can't resist interviewing him. In any event, his realpolitik view of the world is outdated. It seems the world moved on while Henry is stuck in the seventies.
I have a great appreciation for Charlie and the show. But I wish he would stop interviewing Kissinger. Everybody treats the man as a great and respected statesman. He is a suspected war criminal. His influence on policies in regard to South America are unconscionable. Thousands of people were tortured, killed, and "disappeared" as a result of US machinations on the continent. Unless he wants to answer fully the charges against him, and answer to the aggrieved peoples and nations, I've heard enough from Kissinger.
Dear Henry Kissenger.In General Pattons famous speech he states, "When your grandchild is bouncing on your knee and he asks what did you do during the war Grandpa?" Henry Kissenger can say that he was in Military Intelligence serving in Germany in the immediate postwar period and his job was to round up exGestapo agents. His grandchild might ask how did you do that Grandpa, to which dear Henry can answer, "Why by placing an ad in the help wanted classified ads of the local newspaper seeking people with police experience."
