I think a hundred years from now K. Teele, people will still be humming Beatles or our simple folk music as you like to call it. And you will still be irrelevant. So good day sir.

Only one word can define Julie Taymor: GENIUS. Some people don't understand her because she is too advanced for her time. I simply adore her work, a transcendental, a-temporal one. As a poet I cannot identify with any movie maker more than with her. Her magical realism is the other side of the coin of my meta-dimensional poetry. It is my ultimate dream that she could direct the screenplay I wrote inspired by her. ALICIA www.poetalicia.com

K. Teel, I certainly see your point of view. That having been said, however, I think, particularly in the case of the Beatles, this type of movie is *extremely* risky. You yourself note that people go into a "hypnotic state" at the mention of the Beatles. As Julie Taymor noted at the start of this interview, the band is viewed as a "sacred cow." Putting any kind of spin or interpretation on any one Beatles song, let along 30+ of them, opens the possibility of being viewed as near-blasphemy. The fact that this movie has been hailed as "groundbreaking" and ""outstanding" suggests that this chance she took did indeed pay off: that she is in fact a visionary, and not simply another director pandering to the lowest common denominator.

k.teel i think you're being incendiary for incendiary's sake. and it makes you seem uninformed. i mean, you articulate your case well but you would have made a better point for yourself if you explored a more complex angle, discussing anything admirable about her or her execution of this film, rather than resorting to belittlement of formative creative forces of musical history(whether you think their sound is original or not). i do not entirely disagree with what you're saying...all the more reason i was actually offended by the manner with which you made your claim. try not to narrow your perspective so much.

What a terrificly adventurous spirit this talented woman has! Julie Taymore, knowing her own mind and having the spark to act on it is enviable to those who have nothing better to do than criticize bold success. Thanks, Charlie, for your conversation with this creative talent of a lady. I'm looking forward to seeing "Across the Universe"!

This K. Teel person above is one of those that only see's good in things that reflect their own personal identity and arrogance! There is special points of reference to all era's: the so called great generation (our grandparents/great-grandparents)with their grace, integrity, and sincerity; the fifties with the birth of freedom of individual expressions (such as modern music, anotherwords, with a beat); the sixties gave way for yours and mine actual freedom of speech (so don't knock it hot shot!). There are many special efforts given forward by so many individuals throughout history to assist in for change. Why don't you begin by doing something positive, or just shut up! People who set around and criticise, instead of being part of the solution!

Ah, so this woman's specialty is taking great work and shitting all over it. Explains a lot.

Oh please, the portrayal of this woman taking chances make me laugh. What is more predicatable than catering to an overweight, middle age population, who never could quite figure out that the Beatles music was simple folk music, not the rebirth of Mozart. These flabbly middle agers go into a hipnotic state when the word Beatles is mentioned. They have also indoctrinated their children into this rediculousness. What is more predicatable and safer than producing a show based on Beatlemania? Give me a break. This was a good business move, but is is hardly ground breaking or risky.
