Jessie M, if you don't know the name of the band members there wasn't really a reason to even watch the video since you obviously know nothing about the band. Adrock, the one wearing the hat, and the others have their own sense of humor, they weren't being jerks. They looked comfortable in the interview, just not really interested. I don't think Adrock is "holding on", he's matured like the others. They each have their own personality.
I thought the interview was ok. What stood out to me was the idea of these "ill" teenagers that are now grown up. Adrock obviously is holding on, but the other two appear to be more in the later stages. I enjoyed their last release and have always been a fan.
All I have to say is ouch...painful. It's funy how they were suprised at the end...you're kicking us out? I would have ran out of there in shame if I were them, especially Adrock.
Dug S, Charlie is a musician as much as any other. He riffs of his guests. Those questions could easily been asked if they opened up to Charlie.
These 8 comments suck more than the interview.
I can understand how maybe Adrock was a little anoyed,,,by the "FAN" questions. Come on..you hear him say is the fan in the record industry. Also doesnt anyone think that MAYBE the Boys have heard all thoes questions for the last 20 years? Other than the question on ice cream..the writers or Mr. Rose could of came up with better questions. Mr.Rose could of touched on so many other topics..their clothing line..their movie..the other members in their band. Hell Mr.Rose barely acknowledged MCA redarding Dali Lama. As much as most of you were dissapointed with Beastie Boys...the dissapointment should be with the lame questions. Unless in typical Beastie Boy fashion the whole thing was set up..and Mr. Rose was included which would be a typical classic move by the Boys!
I completely agree with the assessments made by Jim C and Jessie M. above. Charlie Rose cant connect with the BBs if they're doing their fake schtick at the table. Charlie looks to find truth in his interviews and almost always succeeds IF his guests open up. The one who most understood this was Mike D, who did his best to share with Charlie. MCA looked really uncomfortable but was trying to relax and give Charlie what he was after. Adrock on the other hand came off like an insecure, paranoid manchild in a hat. I have been a big fan of the BBs, although my interest in them has waned since Hello Nasty. Charlie's instinct was right to end the interview early. I suspect that if the conversation had been better, Charlie would have given them the whole hour. At the end of the segment it is apparent that they KNOW they blew the interview. Charlie pulled every interviewing trick in the book to make them comfortable, but in the end Adrock killed the mood.
I love their music, but couldn't be more disappointed in the interview. They made asses of themselves.
Yes, it is an awkward interview. But it's the Beastie Boys nonetheless. When are you guys coming to Houston??!
Did Charlie Rose's folks intentionally bury this by not listing it under the "BB's"? Hmmm. Sorry about the poor editing in previuous post, BTW...
First, they shouldlist this under "beastie Boys" or oone will ever find it. Second, it was an awkward interview--and I am a big fan of the BB's (and of Charlie, too). I am not sure what happened, as Adrock (w/ the hat) is a bright, interesting and funny guy--I swear he is! I have a little bit of insight. I had the pleasure of interviewing the BB's a couple of weeks ago for musicOMH.com (it's still there if you want to read it). The BB are no tonly revered in the worlds of hip hop, punk, alt rock, etc., etc., but they are also well known for their crazy, irreverant humor. When I interviewed them, they clearly had their *shtick*--it was not to be an *interview* so much as an extensio of their performance. they were half thekselves and half in character--and it was very cool. Just sit back and let them do their thing, really. Lots of laughs and good sound bites. I think Adrock and crew may have realized that that shtick was not going to go over w/ CR--CR is a cool dude, but he just would not have connected with them that way, at all. I can sort of see why Adrock might have been put off-CR might be the *least* funky person on the planet! They might not have been speakinng the same language? It's too bad because the BB's and CR are all quintessential New Yorkers--albeit in very different ways. I could talk to the B's for hours: icons of rap (and, oh yeah--they're white???), hardcore punk, funk, latino funk jams, alt-rock, etc., etc. etc.?!?! They are a phenomenon, really. I actually hope CR has them on again--*if* the BB's feel like they could be better prepared for the tone of the show.
Finally got this video up and running? I've only been watching Charlie for about five or six months now, but this interview should have it's own category. It was horrible. These guys acted like they didn't even want to be there. The guy in the hat, whatever his name is, was the worst of them all. Had it not been for him, I thought the other two may have had some interesting things to say. I'll make a not so bold prediction right now and guarantee Charlie will never have on another set of such bad interviewees.
