Joe Biden
A conversation with Senator Joseph Biden
A conversation with Senator Joseph Biden about his book Promises to Keep: On Life and Politics. He has officially filed as a candidate for the Democratic Party's nomination in the 2008 presidential election.

since he is a good student of history, I would like you to see his position of Iraq before the war: http://www.charlierose.com/shows/2003/01/27/1/an-interview-with-senator-joseph-biden-about-the-world-economic-forum My only comment about this man: He is a very good POLITICIAN.
I am sick of the mass medias quick sound bits and ranking candidates by poll numbers. This mass media does not ask the frontrunners the hard questions and they donâ??t ask candidates like Senator Biden anything at all. It is only NPR and PBS that we the people can turn to for in depth discussions of the issues that face us today. Thank you Charlie Rose for all of your excellent interviews. And thank you Senator Biden for an informative and honest look at where we as a nation stand in the war with Iraq. I have followed Senator Biden's race for President since it frist began. I know that there is only one candidate truly capable of the job at hand and that is Senator Joe Biden. How do we get the mainstream media to put some focus on him? As someone else said," write to all the networks" and tell them, "We want to hear more about Joe Biden's postion on the issues. For that matter we want to hear from all the candidates as to how they intend to fix this nation and we want to hear less about polls and sound bites.
Joe Biden CAN be elected as the Democratic nominee, if we who KNOW the truth about him work diligently to get the word out. For whatever the motivation is for the press NOT to sufficiently cover Joe, we CAN NOT let this DETER us! Write 'LETTERS TO THE EDITOR' of every newspaper & magazine that you can think of. It can be the same letter, submitted to multiple publications. Write another one each week (once you have the email addresses, it's easy to get this information distributed). Additionally, we can write to the newspaper & magazine editors to demand that they provide more coverage of Joe and the other candidates. Voting records, position statements. Americans ARE smart enough to make educated decisions IF the information is presented to them! Those of us who see the value of Joe Biden's thinking for America, have a responsibility to GET THIS INFORMATION OUT TO THE PUBLIC!! It's not an overstatement to claim that how the USA shows up in these next several years will have an ENORMOUS IMPACT on not only America, but the whole world! Let's get out there and MAKE A DIFFERENCE, people! Write! Vocalize!!!!
As I am (4) tour veteran of the Persian Gulf War, and it's aftermath, Senator Biden is the "only" candidate in the arena that has demonstrated to me a clear plan of egress, and a concise way in which to start to heal the damage done to our country in the worlds eye. I have heard nothing of value from any other player on either side of the isle. The only other person that may hold any viable solutions is Fred Thompson, but he has yet to show his hand. Personally I feel we need a Democratic President because we have a Democratic Congress. We can not, (as a nation) fare well with eight years of gridlock. One topic I have not heard anyone comment on yet is immigration, and border and port security. The other topic that we need to pay close attention to is the SSP agreement. I am dis-heartened that the media has all but silenced Senator Biden during the current debates. I have nothing but respect for this man because he is not a celebrity, and he does not sugarcoat the answers with thirty second sound bites. Keep it up Joe. People are listening!
Joe Biden has a problem. Don't get me wrong - I think he's great - his wit and intelligence -I donated to his campaign - and, yes, I'd most certainly vote for him. But in "Running For Office 101", the first lesson is: "Never blow off a mine-worker's widow who has questions about OSHA enforcement, in 10 seconds, and then spend your remaining 20 seconds rebutting someone else's statement about foreign policy" (see the 8/7 democratic debate in Chicago). If being the smartest-guy-in-the-room-who-also-has-amazing-foreign-policy-depth-and-vision were the only requirement to becoming President, Joe Biden would be unstoppable. But in this country he must convince everyday people to vote for him. To do that he needs to be more than someone who has struggled with personal tragedy and hardship, and then found the strength and support to succeed. He needs to demonstrate that his personal life experiences have given him compassion and empathy for everyday people who are alone and still struggling.
He's convinced me. I'll vote for him. I'm doubting it will do any good but, at least I'll know I've voted for the right man.
Dear Mr Rose: Please accept my compliments on an engaging interview with Senator Biden. One cannot help feeling that we Americans need less sound bites and more in-depth coverage of the issues that challenge this country today. For those who are easily dazzled by hollow rhetoric given in 30-second measured doses, their candidates are Clinton, Edwards and Obama--products all of media consultants and political strategists. The political strategists behind Senators Clinton and Obama told them it was better for their respective campaigns to vote against the Iraq supplemental even though, by doing so, they would only be taking a symbolic stand against continuing the war---symbolic! In casting those nay votes, they both knew very well that it takes 67 votes to override a presidential veto and also knew that their opposition was merely symbolic in nature. They did this, they engaged in this symbolic exercise, in complete knowing indifference to the plight of our soldiers serving in Iraq. This is more than enough of a predictor of the type of president either Clinton or Obama would turn out to be: politics first, human beings' lives a distant second. Ambition should not be a measure of a candidate's worth, yet the press continue to selectively focus attention on candidates whose naked ambition betrays their complete lack of moral principles. It was nothing less than immoral, perversly self-interested, to cast symbolic votes against the Iraq supplemental merely to rise a few notches in the polls while American soldiers continue to die and suffer grave injury primarily due to the fact that they do not have the right sort of equipment to protect them. Joe Biden chairs the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, but Hillary Clinton sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee. Why didn't Hillary Clinton put her political ambitions on hold in order to see to it that out soldiers had the best equipment going in? And why did she allow this to persist for 6 very deadly years? And where was her yea vote on when Senator Biden risked his own political future in order to ensure our soldiers got the mine resitant vehicles they so desperately need? Hillary Clinton's sheen of popularity will evaporate if only the press would put the hard questions to her. In my view, the best part of your interview with Senator Biden--the part that did most to show what sort of leader he would be as president--was when he spoke about building a state-by-state consensus in order to block the efforts by powerful interests to hold hostage America's health care system. Biden is 100% right! The rest are just spouting off--as the saying goes, "all sound and fury, signifying nothing." I have read Senator Biden's book, Promises to Keep, and I learned a lot and found the book fascinating reading. He is also a very good writer. The theme of the book may be one of which the Senator himself is only partly aware . . . and it can be found rooted in his inspiration for the title: Robert Frost's poem. Thankfully not all, but certainly many of us have known how it feels to have your heart ripped out, so that nothing matters anymore and life seems empty, not worth living. In his book, Senator Biden tells us that lossing his wife and baby daughter and having his two little sons badly injured left him feeling hopleless and wondering why go on. Frost speaks to this exact feeling in his poem. "The woods are lovely, dark and deep" speaks to the invitation and temptation of a welcome and relieving death. "But I have promises to keep," speaks to that inner strength that keeps us all going if only for the benefit of those who love and depend on us. Life's ultimate triumph lies in knowing that life is its own reward only when we have lived up to our promises. When Joe Biden gets to California, he and his wife, Jill, and his entire entourage will be welcome in my home as honored guests. That is a promise I intend to keep. Joe Biden's promise is that he will be our next president. I know he intends to keep his promise, too.
I have never voted for a Democrat! I would be honored to vote for Democrat Joe Biden for President. Reading his book, I understand that he may be the only presidential candidate who has values and ethics that middle class citizens would find honest and sincere. History will show that Joe Biden is one of our best leaders. Any man willing to jeopardize his chances at being president by telling the truth is rare. Real, non-interest affiliated, true Americans will have the good sense to vote for Biden. The rest will just waste their vote and the next 4 years to boot!
A Joe Biden video I produced and Directed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtGCaqOdIJ4
I am eager to read Joe Biden's book: "Promises to Keep" and know that if Providence(which is God's hand in human history) is guiding everyday thinking, decent, generous American's who will elect him President in 2008, President Biden will be literally living his own book cover's words, 'working night and day at keeping his promises and no sleep or rest in sight.' Joe Biden is no slouch or dead-wood senator. He is too aware, conscious, multi-dimensional, visionary and prophetic, down-to-earth, connected to himself and America's people, and he is no stranger to anguish, loss, grief and 'the awful grace of God. 'All in all, this gives him the mantle-cloak of the Presidency in 2008. After these last 7 years of horrific betrayal and abandonment, don't we all hungrily respond to the very honest, open, transparency and humanity of what it means to be a human being, what it means to be an American, what it means to try to understand and pilgrim with our brothers and sisters--our universal humanity? President Joseph Biden speaks and illuminates this very lost and mis-begotten language. And, Barak Obama would make a suitable Vice-President...hear our prayer.

Although I celelebrate the fact that Clinton and Obama are accepted as serious candidates, I think this time around we must elect Joe Biden. In my view he is the ONLY candidate with enough understanding of the world situation to guide this country through the next few years. I'm afraid that the combination of the diminished view of the U.S. held by most of the world and the incredible amount of debt that we are building seriously threaten our standing. We must have a leader that understands world politics. I will pound the pavement for Joe Biden next year!

So far, for me, Senator Biden stands taller than the other leading Democratic candidates. Hillary has credentials, but too much baggage, and is also probably the candidate the Republicans would most like to oppose. Limbaugh, Fox, the neo-con web sites, et al would have a conspiracy theory field day! Edwards is next; a plaintiff's lawyer who supports "socialized medicine..." blah blah. Obama says great things and may be the most inspiring element of the campaign thus far. But Biden has the knowledge, the eloquence, the passion and the experience to get us out of the messes -- plural -- we are in or heading towards. National bankruptcy will be very unpleasant, and compound that with an abrupt decline in international respect, i.e., credibility, and we can start to see that the new world order will be very different than in Y2K. The American people m-u-s-t be made to understand that our way of doing business will have to change, but first their world views must change so that they can make the special interests give up their stranglehold and let us breathe. Joe Biden seems most qualified to enable that process. Let the Bushies depart posthaste; to paraphrase Capt. Kirk when he was kicking the Klingon off the cliff at the end of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock: we've had enough of you!
Joe Biden is the right man for the toughest job in America. Experience, honesty, and a deep desire to change this country-giving it back to the people. Cleaning up the mess that Bush has made is going to require a President with real experience. Biden's got it.
I lost my respect for Joe Biden during that dog and pony show them democrats pulled on the American People, called the Iran Contra hearings. He sold his soul then and I'd never trust him to utter the truth now. I don't trust any of the other democratic candidates any more than him. When are those people going to realize that there is only so far we can 'pull out to'? The terrorists have made it clear that they will not stop at any 'boundary' in their goal of destroying western civilization. Better to fight on their ground than ours.
Dear Charlie, do interview/have conversations with every candidate if possible. Perhaps package the intereviews into prime time slots so more Americans can meet the candidates and make up their minds about who makes more sense and who can think versus simply read what staffs or special interests tell them. The next US President MUST be more than a figure head who would rather clear brush than think his way through solutions America needs. The next President must earn and keep the trust of Americans and the world by being engaged. Senator Biden has the brains and the global experience to be the best president we may elect for this time in our history! The next decade will be tough for us and for all. As smart as Ms. Clinton is, she will likely be prevented from being effective because she's a woman. Americans are not yet ready to give that job to a female. The nations we have to deal with right now still dismiss women in general as 2nd class citizens or worse. It is a sad fact but in our world today we do not have real human rights--defined as a condition where all humans have fundamental rights of life, security, health, respect, and where "attributes" like gender, sexual orientation, and the rest- race, color, creed, religion, etc., do not matter or count. I get a clear sense from Senator Biden that in his view of the world he already understands the need for true human rights and that he'd be a great American president. Again, thanks for the excellent interview. PS. don't worry about the so-called interuptions some are complaining about. I understand them to be symptomatic of intelligence during a conversation where the mind anticipates the words as it must slow down to speak the thoughts. Your program is excellent!
Senator Biden has what is takes to bring back the real truth of facts on the so called "World Order". I rather hear real strategies for Iraq from leaders than the Spinning word games that in most media outlets. I agree with you on Federalizing Iraq much like your example of Kosovo. I hope Charlie Rose brings you back and perhaps more people will learn the difference between spinning and facts, and the real leadership that is needed for the USA. Money only makes short-term LEADERS. We always pay for those who lack experience and speak through a forked tong. We need to know the difference by remembering history. People from the Middle East always remember history, that is why they don't trust US/EU leaders. We need a trust worthy leader like Joey.
i have been following Senator Biden for years since Bosnia. His legislative work is superb. His knowlege of foreign relations, work on violence against women , and Human Rights, is so far above the other candidates who really are good that he is and should be the next President. he is so good and i fully support him.
Charlie Rose's wonderful format is such a blessing for Joe Biden. It is perhaps the only place on television that informed and intelligent people can watch and listen to those that want to be the next President of the USA in a relaxed atmosphere, with intelligent questions coming at them, awaiting their answers. Judge for yourselves, folks. If you think, as I do, you will know that Joe Biden is the very best choice for our next President. Thanks Charlie for this great opportunity.
From the start, many months ago, he has been light years ahead of ANY one in America speaking on foreign policy issues AND most evey other issue as well! I feel mainstream media has been giving 90% of the press to Hillary and Obama because they are the two Democrats that Republican media moguls WANT to be the front runners! Both are minority candidates. Obama has NO experience. Hillary has been attacked by the Right Wingers for years now and has the most problems with the Christian "Righteous". They are hoping early money peoblems will force Joe out of the race. Joe Biden IS the candidate the Media Moguls and the Republicans are MOST afraid of having to run against! If he can last it out financially - he will not only win the candidacy, but will BE the next President of the United States!
Joe Biden is so underestimated by the press and a lot of the American people. He isn't far enough left for some and he isn't far enough center for others. All he is is a very practical politican with great ideas that stand up very well over time, enough so that some may actually be implemented by either this blithering administration or in the future. This country NEEDS realism and it needs it badly.
I have been watching Senator Biden closely as a Presidential candidate for over four years (I wanted him instead of Kerry and said so in emails to him). I was at a Conversation with him at the Commonwealth Club, and he was just as impressive as you might have found him to be with this CR interview. I have been keeping my eyes on politics Republicans and Democrats since the debacle election of 2000 and I still find that Senator Biden is the best solution to what ails America and our relations with the rest of the World. Please help make him our next President!
Hi everyone. If you support Joe Biden's policies, please consider a small donation to his campaign. I set up a payment of $5 to recur every month. Every little bit helps. I also changed my display name on Myspace to "Joe Biden for President." It effectively promotes him with every message.
Thank you Mr. Rose, for a quiet and thoughtful conversation covering a breadth of issues that the voters need to hear. Great American "kitchen table" conversation! Let's see what happens in Iowa. Go get 'em Joe!
I have made two contributions to Joe Biden. I believe he is the answer to our countries needs. For all of you out there who want to see him elected, contribute whatever you can. Send e-mails to everyone you know asking them to support Joe Biden. This dark horse just may come from behind and suprise alot of people. It takes a grass roots movement!
Joe Biden's knowledge of foreign relations is as deep as Al Gore's knowledge of climate change.
How can anyone vote for anyone other than Joe Biden in the upcoming election? And I am referring to both parties. You may not agree with everything he says, but you must admit that his knowledge of foreign policy is head and shoulders above the rest.
These one hour shows where you profile a presidential candidate are great. You did a deft job exploring Biden's foreign policy views and personality. I hope you have him and the others on again. I'd like to hear Biden's domestic policy views - energy, healthcare, immigration, etc. - the next time you have him on.
Like him or not, Pres. Johnson got legislation through Congress because of his years as a Senator. So of the Dem. Senators, Joe has the best ability to get legislation passed, maybe Hillary 2nd (bc of Bill as First-Dude), and the rest only place 3rd. Joe's the Man with the Plan.
Obama states as his position (on taking on bin Laden in Pakistan) "stated foreign policy" and Biden calls it "naivete" (later "uninformed"). If Biden were as smart as he thinks he is, he wouldn't have made THAT mistake. Or is Biden, like your average politician, just trying to confuse the voter and have it both ways: calling Obama "naive" and Clinton and Dodd "wrong" while making himself appear knowledgeable. Biden continues to "play politics" (i.e. twist and distort another candidates position) by oversimplifying Obama's position regarding nuclear weapons. Does anyone really believe that Obama wouldn't use nuclear weapons if nuclear weapons were used against us? Clearly it was Obama's intent to demonstrate his respect for other nations. If we tell other nations that we reserve to bomb your third world nation into the fourth world, that sends the message that we have little regard for them. It's this lack of regard that has made us enemies the world over. Even Biden takes the nuke bomb off the table by stating "I would never use nuclear weapons (NOTE: if I wanted to I could end the quote there but this is a discussion, not political gamesmanship) first" unless he had actionable intelligence that a nation was about to use nuclear weapons against the U.S. Obama is stating the same thing.
Senator Biden has more intelligence and experience in his little finger than any candidate running (Democrat or Republican). Those who know him, those who know what Joe is capable of pray every day that the American people wake up. We get what we deserve in this country. Just look at the last seven years. Let's not makes another catastrophic blunder at the polls again. If Hillary becomes the nominee there'll be a relentless attack on her every day of her presidency. Look what the Republicans did to Bill Clinton. It'll be TEN TIMES worse if Hillary is in office. And then NOTHING will get done for the people of this country. I like Obama, but I think four or eight years as Joe's VP will give him the proper experience to deal with foreign policy which is so desperately in need of someone like Senator Biden's knowledge and experience. Please go to Youtube and watch a video I have produced about Senator Joe Biden. Itâ??s entitled: Joe Biden, An American President.
I was very impressed with Joe Biden's quick grasp to explain foreign policy issues; he has obviously been "in the trenches". However, after reading comments made by John Nivas in response to Biden's commentary re:Tudman/Dayton peace agreement I would like to know more. What is the real scoop there? Was Tudman a savior or a thug? Love your show, most of the time.
IRAN: Are you trying to tell me that America's installing of the Shah was a good thing?
Excellent conversation. The more I hear about Biden's plan the more I have hope that Iraq can actually be somewhat fixed. To all of those critiquing Charlie's style of interviewing, I for one appreciate the fact he does treat it as a conversation and not a conventional interview. I also know no other show where guests can explain themselves more fully than on Charlie Rose (commercial interruption is way more disrupting than any of Charlie's interjections). My two cents.
That was the best interview with Biden I've seen yet and the only one that makes me think he might have something worth saying. The talk about the failures, politically and militarily in Iraq, were especially strong points by the Senator.
For the most part, throughout history our national elections have been popularity contests. Senator Joe Biden is popular only among those of us who pay attention to national and international affairs. Joe Biden is the most qualified candidate to be president. He has talked about a solution for the Iraq quagmire for years. He is the most likely of the all the candidates to repair the good reputation of America, restore the American dream to our middle class, and give hope that the poor can join the middle class. We can't stop the popularity contest. No way. Therefore, for the sake of our children's future, we must help make Senator Joe Biden popular among people who are not inclined to watch the Charlie Rose Show. It can be done.
Thank you for providing a full hour for Joe Biden to speak and show your audience, the thoughtful, wise and articulate leader he is. Hopefully, with more programs like this, he will be able to break through the noise of the celebrity candidates we hear so much from day after day.
Dear Senator: NATIONS of Iraq, Iran, and other Developing countries, more than anything else, need safety, security, food, shelter, water, and electricity. Furthermore, there is the Nation and there is the RULING REGIME. They are not the same. United States used to be much more intellegent fifty years ago. Then, to remove REGIMES did not need to punish the NATION in the process. Last, but not least, it was during the US Democratic Party Presidency of 1993-2000 that the Islamic Regime ruling Iran spread its wings. Thanks!!
I was looking forward to this one and was thrilled to hear more from this impressive man. Please interview all the candidates--it really helps us get to know them. Incidentally, I was glad you said (on the show with Kofi Annan) that you are not finished with China. We still need an antidote to the whitewashing by the affable Chinese politicians of China's human rights abuses, including Tibet. Thank you for all your hard work and love of your work!
I am a regular viewer of your show every single evening. You have more intelligent conversation than any offering on television. I really, really enjoyed this show featuring Senator Biden. I didn't really know that much about Senator Biden before this, other than "bits and snippets" of news that made headlines. I was really impressed with Senator Biden. When he speaks, I actually understand!! He speaks in common language, gives examples and allows me to see things that I didn't understand when listening to other politicians. He has experience that other candidates don't possess. He knows the "system". He is passionate and I like that! I never thought of him as a serious candidate before...I am rethinking my position. Thank you for having him on your show.
Charlie: If you listened better, you would not have to interrupt. I can not decide if you are presenting the questions of the "average viewer' or yourself. If yourself, you could do better. I really expect (and have seen) better. But we all have off days and Senator Biden is one of the best minds in the Senate. I like him better now. His mocking our officials with "We are leaving" was stupid. What he said today about the United Nations made sense.
I once had a great deal of respect for Sen. J. Biden. But after hearing his comments regarding the war in Bosnia, I'm very disheartened. It is quite unimaginable to me, and I'm sure to any real scholar studying the Balkan wars of the 90's, that the former President of Croatia (Dr. Franjo Tudman) could be put in the same class as the then Serb president aka "butcher of the Balkans" (Milosevic). To remind Sen. Biden, Croatia, under the leadership of Tudman, had lost 1/3 of its country to a Serb onslaught in the very early 90's. Tudman and his new Croatia didn't have time for Genocide! Instead, what followed in 1995 was that Croat forces under the leadership of Tudman and with military support from the United States saved the city of Bihac from a Serb massacre and resulted in the Dayton peace agreement and end of the war in Bosnia. To now be calling the United States then biggest ally in the region (i.e., Croatiaâ??s Tudman) "a thug" that supported genocide is truly unimaginable and troubling. This type of revisionism of relatively recent and well known historical facts will do nothing but make our partners in the world think twice before dealing with us. I can't imagine what effect these comments would have on the possibility of defeating our adversaries in the world. You've lost my vote.
Charlie, please don't interrupt your guests in mid-sentence. You are almost as bad as Chris.
I have always had a lot of respect for Senator Biden. As he said he has had a track record for getting things done. I think he has just gotten my vote. He is right about Universal Health Care. Even thought I think the common people in the US are starting to be open to the idea, there will be lots of resistance from the companies that stand to benefit from the current arrangement. We need to have a person who understands how Congress and special interests work to get it passed. I agree with Biden's ideas on Iraq. His honesty is so refreshing. But then he has always been honest.
Joe Biden is the antidote to 8 years of Hell with Bush. When this interview was over, I immediately went to www.JoeBiden.com and contributed $50 to his campaign. I wish it could have been more. I pray Americans will come to their senses and vote for Joe Biden to be our next President. Please, spread the word and support this great statesman. Thank you.
Just a great show. Sen Biden has made sense in the Foriegn Policy arena going way back. We need Biden clones so if he runs and wins we do not lose his wisdom in the Senate. His take on public financing of elections is also critical to ensuring every american has health care, a world class education, and a real step up into an expanding not shrinking middle class. My biggest issue wth CR is not that he'll deflect when he's heard some boilerplate response but that he echoes the other side's warmed over drivel. If I wanted that I'd unblock the Fox channel.
Please stop interrupting/talking over your guests. It appears rude, and prevents your audience from hearing the point that guest would like to make.
Senator Biden is the epitome of a great leader. A strong leader respected by both American political parties and major world leaders. So far he is the only candidate with a plausible solution for the Iraq War and has the ability to see through his plans. His plan allows for weak central government, which will allow for the various Iraqi sects to separate themselves from each other, while still maintaining a United Iraq Nation. My question is why isnâ??t he getting the media attention he deserves? I think he needs a headline grabbing commercial on YOU TUBE.
Dear Charlie, Where is the strategic vision promulgated by one candidate for President that address's the acts of adversaries whom are not part of Western Civilization., i.e., China, Iran, Russia, Venezuela et al. The facts below are: 'According to a knowledgeable Bush administration official, "vast amounts" of Chinese-made large caliber sniper rifles, "millions of rounds" of ammunition, rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), and "IED [improvised explosive device\ components" have been convoyed from Iran into Iraq and to the Taliban in Afghanistan.' There is a Tiger in the Room! Today
Senator Biden is a good guy, better senator, great visceral politician. Yet, senator Biden will not be elected President. He wishes to be Vice President - listen closely to his " I can get it done theme " The Vice President by constitutional right has access and play in the arena of the legislature..... The arena Senator Biden best understands and promulgates is the arena whereby change occurs. Senator Biden would be a strong, effective, at times wild but loyal Vice President. Secretary of State is becoming less and less appealing to senator Biden - yes he will take the job. Phillip Urso Russo
