I love your show, but HOW LONG do we have to wait for an in-depth interview with Ron Paul? He finished 2nd (!) today in Nevada and often finishes ahead of Rudy Giuliani and other â??frontrunnersâ??. THIS JUST IN: Ron Paul got twice as many votes as Rudy Giuliani in South Carolina!

In spite of the 8 year legacy of what will certainly be regarded as one of (if not the absolute) worst presidencies in the history of the nation - the Republicans don't have to lose in '08. But if they nominate Guiliani they will. His record of incompetence, lack of judgment and weakness of character will neutralize any advantage the Rep's might be able to otherwise bring into the campaign against Hilary. Charlie - how about a program with a journalist who has looked into just who Rudy's financial supporters and idelogical gurus are. Rudy would prove to be, like Bush II, an embarrassment to his party and a disaster for the country. Great for the Bernard Kerricks and the already discredited Podhoretz' & Wolfowitz' of the world - just bad for the rest of us who are trying to navigate a country through the perilous waters of the early 21st century.

What a weak candidate. It was all national security. The tactic seems to be "we don't have a good domestic plan ie no universal health care coverage, so let's talk about national security". But I disagree with the posts saying charlie should have given him a harder time. I think he leaves it to the viewers to be critical. But I hope Americans don't vote for this guy. Be wary of the candidates who discuss only foreign policy. I thought that his comment on Health Care Insurance being like car insurance very weak... I come from Canada and I cannot get over the obstacles Americans come up with against Universal Health Care. As if Universal Health Care discourages good health.(that is what Rudy thinks!). Why would anyone start smoking because of free health care? Charlie should have confronted Rudy that people in Canada or France do not lead less healthy lives because of single payer health care. I notice there is a lot of right wing hysteria in the US, it has to be confronted right away, or else, the "myth" develops. Like univerval health care is impossible, too expensive. Are you Americans or Americants!

While I agree with you JerseyGuy on Giuliani and "republican values", what has that gotten us in the last 6 years? possibly most corrupt and by far inept gov't in america's history, civil liberties eroded away etc, and I agree that it would be nice if Charlie would be more confrontational with guests sometimes but on the other hand he's there to find out their thoughts and opinions and let us decide for ourselves whether we agree or not. If you want more hard-hitting interviews with important figures, I suggest you check out Hardtalk with Stephen Sakur on BBC World, an excellent program and he does not let his guests get away with rehetoric or out and out lieing. As for Charlie, I say keep up the good work and I look forward to another in-depth interview tonight!

It drives me crazy when Charlie just sits silently and listens when Rudy goes on about "Democrats don't understand the seriousness of the threat" or "Core Republican values are a strong defense and small government"!!! Surely, by enabling Bin Laden to continue operating freely out of Pakistan (by fighting the wrong war), and by signing off on the billions in unnecessary earmarks, the Bush administration has demolished both of those myths. I think we desperately need a new kind of interviewer - one who not only listens politely, but is also willing to confront the candidate when he spouts baloney instead of facts!!!

I think its so ridiculous that Republicans raise the specter of Iran handing off nuclear material to terrorists when Pakistan has ALREADY handed off nuclear material to all sorts of people. However, what did we hear about that ? Nothing. 15 of the 9/11 hijackers were Saudi Arabian. What do we hear about that ? Nothing. The real threats are being ignored while the countries that fit our needs strategically are being cynically used as scapegoats. What hypocrites. This kind of inconsistent use of force is going to lead to more terrorism and America will continue to be perceived as an unjust bully. Stop being a nation of six year olds that accepts what the Republican leaders say and get your act together again, America.

First let me say that I voted twice for Rudy - first time was out of desperation considering the mess Dinkins had made, second time was in part that he had done a good job but also there was no real alternative. Rudy did a good job in that his first term he hired some darn great people like Bratton. But has Rudy got more as ease he let his true nature get out from behind the facade. He's a terribly immature fella who acts, thinks and talks as if he were in the fifth grade - he's shown that he has little ethics, morals or values as he circumvented rules, regulations and even laws to get his yes-men like Kerik in place - then on a personal level he sunk to no-man's land moving his mistress in with his then-wife and kids - and then trying to make out that his first marriage was brief when in fact it was 14 years long and he didn't discover a desperate need to end till he met wife #2. He also seriously failed the NYFD - out of date radios certainly contributed to their lack of communication on 9-11. The police radios were still working. Also, lack of medical care for First Responders was absolutely appalling. Rudy also does not have the international knowledge or diplomacy required. Nor does he have the maturity to develop it. Many of us might have liked to see Charlie Rose take Rudy apart - but letting him talk like the man-child he is, laughing and chortling - well, maybe Charlie let the viewer just see poor Rudy for what he is - not all that much. Sadly, if this is the best the GOP can come up with they're in for years of losses.

As a resident of New York City, I am aware that Rudolph Giuliani ran for mayor three times. He lost the first time against Dinkens. [I voted for Mayor Dinkens.\ NYC had been in a dangerous down spiral for decades. The last years of the only Dinkens administration, there were about 2,300 murders in New York! I was fed up so, I voted for Giuliani. And, for the second time I voted for him as well. All politicians when running for office, promise everyone the world. So, did Giuliani. Did I believe him? NO! In Giuliani's last year as mayor, there were about 600 murders. This should serve as an anaolgy for much that he accomplished: the end to the patronization of minorites and their so-called "leadership," initiating the taking seriosly "low-grade" crime {'the broken windows theory'), welfare reform with the keen understanding that the well intentioned idea was hurting the very people that it intended to help... &, etc. He promised us the world and delivered twice as much! Imagine that I can walk the streets at night without fear. Before, the streets and subways were often scarey during the noon hour! When, due to term limitations, Bloomberg bacame mayor, I was afraid that we would reverse course in New York for the worse. But Bloomberg continued Giuliani's methods and. added a greater civility to the office. Unless Senator Hilary Clinton makes a terrible gaff -- she has locked up the Democratic nomination. She is very smart -- and, has learned a great deal even before her husband became president. And, more so since being a senator and even a greater amount since running for president. During the most recent CNN debate, she fully prepared and self assurred: flawless! (In my opinion: too perfect!) But, I find her too scripted and manipulative. She has a real knack for accomplishing her goals. But, her superior intelligence and personality skills allow her to make me not believe her a lot of what she says most of the time! I vote Democratic about 80% of the time -- but, not all the time. If it turns out to be the New York City Mayor vs. the transplanted Ilinois via Arkansas and Washington, New York State senator: I'll pick Rudy! Why? I have always thought that MAYOR GIULIANI TOLD THE TRUTH! And, after viewing the Charlie Rose interview -- I STILL BELIEVE THAT "RUDY" TELLS LIKE HE SEES IT. Of couse with some comprise so that he has a chance of getting elected. [Maybe I'm naive?\ But, if true, how refreshing! One caveat: under Giuliani and Bloomberg, rents, conduminian and co-op prices are quickly making Manhattan an island for the super-rich. I know that the state legislatures have a great deal of control over housing. But, Giuliani and Bloomberg have done nothing to stop these egregious housing gouges. After the worst administration in my lifetime, (Cheney/Bush), it amazes me that I would vote for any Republican for president! But, I suspect (and, maybe I'm wrong) Giuliani is not just any Republican or, for that matter, just any politician! As for family matters -- we only know of them due to his prominent roles. 99% of people have to. Null! I have followed Mayor Giuliani closely. To repeat: when rinning for mayor three times, he promised us the sky and gave us the cosmos! Should he become the president and just delivers most of his agenda -- that would be JUST GREAT!

Mayor Giuliani does not have the foreign policy experience to run this country at a time when we need a leader with a strong understanding of the world. His plus is 9/11, but that is very much happenstance and not proof of leadership. To be honest it was a mistake in the first place to have his command center at WTC. What I fear is another presidency that is run by people that were not elected as commander-in-chief. I fear not the use of military force, I don't think any front runner in the '08 race is going to portray themselves as a dove, but the fear of misguided aggression. I see people cheer him as this fiscally conservative guy (great he can keep the metaphoric check account balanced..well so can my wife) and this socially liberal person at the same time. But Mayor Giuiliani has also said that he would continue to appoint 'strict constructionism' judges, which undermines many of these so-called liberal social values of the mayor and his philosophy. He just doesn't have the chops for the job. The republicans really look weak with their actors and such.

Who said that if you live by your heart life is a tragedy - and by your head a comedy? Rudy Guiliani is the 2008 Campaign's equivelent of the court jester. Yes - if you listen with your heart it is a sad day for America to think the best the Republicans might offer is the only mayor in the US to have his Emergency Command Center denied him because of his arrogance in the face of wiser council. But if you listen with your head it will be the best comedic experience of your life to watch this buffoon in action. Charlie - you let Kissinger and Zbig and Scowcroft speak because they are men of brilliance, knowledge and experience. That was a great, great show. But when you get an intellectual dwarf like Howdy Doody Call Me Rudy at your table you need to pull the wizards curtain away and let the country see the sham behind the attempt at intelligence, sincerity and competence he tries to convey. The main thing to watch out for is if Rudy begins characterizing the country as one big family - because we all know the treatment he gives his family.

When you have a chronic disease, such as multiple sclerosis, diabetes, psoriasis, or a thousand other things, no matter how much "personal responsibility" you exercise to take care of yourself, you will still have significant and uncontrollable health care expenses. In addition, with Americans working the longest hours in the industrialized world and living in a state of chronic sleep deprivation, how are we supposed to find the time for what keeps us healthy: 8 hours' sleep every night, 30-60 minutes of exercise a day, time to prepare nutritions meals instead of eating fast food, time to relax to reduce stress, time with friends and family? I was paying COBRA rates for a healthy person for more than a year, which cost about $4,000 a year for a single person, not including copayments, deductibles, cost-sharing, uncovered medications and expenses, etc. Real wages have been stagnant in this country for decades, while CEO salaries/perks and corporate profits have soared. So now, in addition to personal wages that haven't budged for decades while costs have increased dramatically, having to pay for our own retirements because the 401k plans that were sold to the citizens of this country as a means to supplement the personal savings leg of the 3-legged stool have instead served as an excuse for CEOs to eliminate the traditional defined benefit pension plan, we'll be expected to find the money to pay for our own health insurance too? In addition to saving for college, and paying thousands of dollars a year to purchase the long-term care insurance that the government says we'll need to pay for the nursing home care that Medicare doesn't cover at all? The poverty rate in the United States is one of the highest among the post-industrialized developed world. Currently roughly 13% of the US population fall below the federal poverty threshold. In 2006, the poverty rate for minors in the United States was 22% - the highest child poverty rate in the developed world. In 2005, the median annual household income according to the US Census Bureau was about $46,000. On these incomes, Giuliani and those of his ilk expect us to purchase high-deductible insurance policies and save our leftover pennies in Medical Savings Accounts to pay for the $20,000 broken leg or the $50,000 gall bladder operation? The open heart survery and the chemotherapy and radiation treatments? I've got one question for Giuliani: what happens when the car breaks down and needs $1,500 worth of repairs to get you to work, and you've just spent all of your savings, with no money left for your high deductible? Are we expected to turn to our neighbors, who we don't know because we're all working too much, and beg them to hold a bake sale to raise money for the deductible? Are such people turned away from doctors and hospitals (who now want their copays and deductibles up front)and left to die in the street like people in a third world country? What happens then, Mr. Giuliani? When you had your prostate surgery, medicine, and various treatments, how much did you pay out of pocket? Could the average American family afford to come up with that amount of cash? And what about the next year, when another family member has a health crisis? My 82 year old aunt is dying of cancer, always paid her bills, and even though she is on Medicare, she is hounded by hospital bill collectors asking, "Can't you just send us $600?" She showed me her desk with neat piles of medical bills about 3 feet wide by 1 foot tall. In what other civlized country does this happen? No wonder the rest of the world calls us "the ugly Americans."

Giuliani's idea that the automobile insurance industry is something that the health care insurance industry should try to emulate demonstrates clearly his disconnect from reality. Obviously, he has not personally had to pay auto insurance lately and perhaps has never had to deal with the industry when making a claim. One claim and the auto insurance companies will hike your rates up or drop you all together. Is this what Giuliani has in mind for health care insurance? One serious illness or injury and the insurance company can drop you or rob you blind with higher premiums?

Mr. Rose: Once agains an excellent "conversation," but you allowed Giuliani to ride you rather than the journalist riding his guests. I like most of the "converation" with all leaders and current influencial persons of our time, almost all conversations are well presented and every once in a while Charlie gets sloppy and gets to be rdden by slicky candidates/politicians like that of Giuliani. I wish Charlie asked Giuliani whether his debacle moral and family value would be a good example to be a leader of the most powerful nation in the world. Surprisingly, Giuliani is also using the Republicans banner to run for office but if you look at Giuliani's moral fiber he is more Liberal than the Liberals contending against him for the president of the free world. In my opinion, a divided soul like Giuliani whose moral fiber is the weakest of all Republicans or Democrats alike should not be elected to be the leader of the free world. At the same time he is trying to appease others how determined he is dealing with terrorism, while ignoring the sources of terrorism. Attempting to destroy terrorism using GWB's doctrine is like performing operation inside a moving vehicle on a rough road. First you have to have all things at rest before performing operation so you do not rapture small veins and damage unintended organs. To eliminate terrorism one must confront it from all directions. Those who have chosen to be terrorists are gone for good and will never be able to rehabilitate them, but we can minimize their effect by denying them more recruits and eventually drying their wells. Sport is one form of such tactics. Those countries prone to radicalism do not have sports institution in their country, so American embassies around the world should fund and build promote sports institutions; while pursuing those who are bent on causing destruction. Giuliani never offers a different solution than what we have in our hand today. A leader doesn't have to always push for toughness, politically mature leader has to look at the world with a magnifying glass not with a tunneling view.

I just lost all respect for Charlie Rose. He lobbed questions at Giuliani like he was trying out for the Fox News softball team. In a recent interview with Wesley Clark, Mr.Rose talked about the nuts and bolts of foreign policy, that is when he wasn't cutting Mr.Clark off or practically telling him he was wrong. So, judging by that, I thought he might bring up Bernard Kerik, his moronic decision to put the Command Center in 7 WTC, or the Firefighters Union's allegations against Mr.Giuliani. Nope. It was just an hour long campaign commercial. I understand Mr.Rose will have some other Presidential candidates on the program. My money is on Mr.Rose finding his backbone in time to ask Hillary Clinton some hard hitting questions. I won't get to find out if I'm right, though, because I'm done. I watched and I wasn't surprised about anything, actually I got tired of listening about 2 thirds of the way through it and changed the channel. Rich F'*&ing politicians have no clue what it's like to be a poor working man. If you give a man a big enough tax break, he might be able to move out of the ghetto, or finally buy a reliable car to get back and forth from work, but health insurance is always going to be the last thing they buy, because they are hoping against hope that they won't ever need it. I consider myself to be pretty conservative, but I think when it comes to health care, IT'S DIFFERENT! How can the so called leader of the so called free world leave people without health care. I say screw the insurance companies. All they do is take and take and then when it's time to pay they never want too. Take them out of the loop, put a cap on, costs and doctors salaries, along with CEO's of every business out there. I'm sick and tired of seeing the rich get richer while the middle class disappears. It's greed that's killing this country! And rich lawyers like Giuliani love it. If you think he knows anything about how to protect you, ask him why he didn't prevent 9-11 instead of making fortune off of it. There has been a radical Islamist element for many years, and they have always failed. They are too diverse among themselves. Now that the U.S. has attacked one of their countries, FOR NO REASON, they are coming out of the woodwork! If they ever decide to all get together we are in real trouble! By the way who exactly is the enemy and how can we tell if we are winning the war on terror? It's a never ending war so corporations like Halliburton can get all of the money we should be using to improve our standard of living here. Oh yeah, we don't actually have the money we are borrowing it from the Chinese. Maybe they'll loan me some so I can afford "HEALTH INSURANCE".Politicians make me sick. So far I like this Ron Paul guy. Maybe Charlie should have him on.

My Two Cents... I appreciate that Giuliani was willing to be subjected to an hour long interview. However, I was surprised at what a poor job he did. Specifically, I was surprised on how poor he was on national security. He was very poor on Iran - besides saying that there is no way they can go nuclear, he really did not say very much at all. He had a very hard time say who the "enemy." He seemed to want to say he had a good team that advised him on those things, and trying to tell Charlie who exactly it was - the basic point is that for a person who is suppossed to "protect us," he seemed very unable to tell us who we should worry about. Moreover, he seemed to say over and over that it "all depends." This does not look very decisive - of coruse it all depends. We all know this. But Giuliani is suppossed to be the guy who is decisive, so an it "all depends" answer looks whimppy. (See his answer to Charlie about whether we would go in to Pakastan if we needed to, which he sort of danced around: his answer yes we should have the option to think about it depending on the conditions. Whippy! But here is a real problem that he cannot fix. His republicanism is based on two core features: 1 small government libertarianism and 2. national security republicanism. Mitt Romney over and over talks about a three fold Republicanism 1. small government libertarianism, 2. national security republicanism, and 3. family values republicanism. Hillary is going to be the Democratic nominee and she is particularly vulnerable on the family values issue - i.e. do you like the Clintons as a model of an America family or do you like the Romney family as a model of the American family. That;s a power family values image for the Romney people to contrast themselves with Hillary. Giuliani cannot talk about the family values issue at all. Moreover, as the debate at CATO and the Daily KOS and the New Republic on the Democrats taking the "libertarian" vote from the Republicans. This is to say the libertarian vote is not longer a given in the Republian party, while the social conservative family values vote is still there. Giuliani has embraced two of the three branches of Republicanism, but the libertarian branch he has embraced is not particuarly strong for the Republican party anylonger - post G.W. Bush. Guiliani, thus, I think is a looser political wise.... But we'll see.... Patrick

That will encourage people to take better care of themselves. It will also reward saving since people can pick high dediuctibles to get very low monthly payments, which really benefits the patient in the long run..

Rudy is slicker than slick. I felt sorry for Charlie Rose trying to get a word in during Mr. Giuliani's near non stop rant. Mr. Giuliani's said Clinton erred in not seeing the terrorist attacks of the 90's as war instead of crime. Bush and his defenders have been using this ruse to confuse people. Does this mean that they also erred in seeing Tim McVey's attack as crimial. Was that a war by the radical right of this country? On health care he said that somehow a tax credit is going to drive down health insurance rates. The private insurance industry operates to create a profit - the average overhead is 20%. Medicare operates with a 2% overhead. The big secret that the insurance companies and there defenders don't want people to know is Medicare is a big success and probably is the model we should use to make sure everyone gets coverage. After all the goal is to cover everyone isn't it? Mr. Giuliani's goal seems to be to cover a lot of people very expensively and to preserve insurance industry profits. Giuliani is the definition of a demagogue.

I missed the first 15 minutes watching local news. From what I saw, Charlie Rose kept Giuliani pretty much on target...but he left Rudy's private health care insurer proposal go unchallenged---although they shared a laugh about Michael Moore's recent movie "Sicko". How can Giuliani's proposal to magically increasing the number of federal tax deductions for individual health care increase the supply of private insurers willingness to insure so many "new claimants" when they are routinely rejecting those of us with "pre-existing conditions" who can afford to pay now? And Charlie, while repeating that Giuliani's proposal would leave many people uninsured, allowed Rudy to slide on finding a solution to that dilemma. Where was Charlie's retort on this issue?
