Goya is a very complex character .One good approach is in Carlos Saura´s movie. I think that is an error to see Napoleon as a freedom giver to Spain .He was an invader of the country, a general .Sure the spanish inquisition was an horror but they were another european inquisitions then .

Mr. Forman, as great a film director as he may be, doesn't seem to have any idea of what the Spanish Inquisition was; but, worst than that, he doesn't seem to understand the subject of his title, Goya, and his amazing art. Mr. Forman's comparison of "El tres de Mayo" with Picasso's Guernica, I suppose, made his presentation even more painful. Two paintings of such nagnitude can't be thrown together just for fun.
